Ariz. teacher on leave for taking choir to Hooters

I don't care what the definition states...we all know why the restaurant is named that... and your online definition doesn't change the intention of the name. If the intention was to be "owl-focused" why not have the wait staff dress as Owls??!!! :rotfl:
My response was focused on your comment that you have never heard of owls referred to as 'hooters'.

I think the teacher probably used poor judgement, but I also think the punishment is pretty harsh.
What punishment? The teacher is on leave (paid, I presume). She hasn't been fired. Assuming the she is in a union and that the district has no rules against having lunch at Hooters, she isn't going to be fired. She will either be back in the classroom or she will remain on leave until her retirement kicks in.
I don't know how other Hooters operate, but I know the one here routinely advertises "theme days" when the waitresses are dressed like school girls.
We certainly wouldn't want school kids to eat in a restaurant where the servers are dressed like school kids, would we?
They also have car washes on Saturdays during the summer. Guys(and I'm guessing girls, too) sit out on the patio and watch the waitresses wash their car while they eat and drink.
Similarly, our local high schools have car washes where guys (and I'm guessing girls, too) sit around while the kids wash their cars. Perhaps these fundraisers would be more successful if they sold wings. :confused3

Poor judgement on behalf of the teacher, but a major overreaction by the school board. Of course, they were covering themselves on the the faux outrage of the parents who would be sceaming for justice that their little darlings were subjected to the horrors of women in tank tops serving delicious wings. As we all know, there is no outrage like that of a helicopter parent.

Well, it's been mentioned that she is retiring in January. She has just had taken from her the last few weeks of her chosen career. She could have been told that some parents/school officials don't want students taken to Hooters anymore without removing her from the last few weeks of her profession. It's just my own opinion, but I think it's a gross overreaction to take her out of work at ALL. So now the district is paying her assumed-paid leave, AND paying a per diem employee. With school funding issues what they are, it just seems such an exaggerated and unnecessary reaction!

Well, I don't know about other girls, but dd11 doesn't wear a mini skirt with thigh high stockings and her shirt tied up to look like a halter to school.

I also don't see the comparison in a school fundraiser and a restaurant having their servers wash patrons cars. Those seem like two pretty different situations.

I really don't care what Hooters does or doesn't do. They are using very creative marketing to boost their bottom line. Good for them. However, I don't fully agree that they are the same as any other "family" restaurant. They are a business, I don't feel the need to bash them or defend them, I'm simply showing why some people may have a certain perception of them.

I haven't ever gone to a Hooter's. I probably wouldn't take my kids to one, having nothing but its image to judge by. HOWEVER I am married to a teacher, and was once a student (thus had many teachers in the past). I do NOT think the punishment fits the ? lapse in judgment ?. Seriously, she fed the kids in a place where, perhaps the "image" is not in the best taste, to many. But there also is nothing terrible going on there. Short shorts and tank tops. She is on LEAVE because of that.

I don't understand why the teacher couldn't just get a reprimand or something. Seriously, we have no idea how many places she tried to get her group into. Perhaps the place she'd planned on didn't remember to set up tables for 40! (It's happened to us). Perhaps she made the best decision she felt she could, under the circumstances. It's worth being kicked off her JOB?

If I had a nanny for my kids, and the nanny took them to lunch at Hooters (even though I wouldn't take them there myself), I would sit her down and tell her that I don't really want my kids going there...that I am not comfortable with that lunch choice. I wouldn't kick my nanny off the job.

If Grandma took the kids to Hooters while out shopping one day, I wouldn't tell Grandma she can no longer be trusted with my kids. So why do that with a teacher?

I think you are reading way too much into it, its just a place to get some food.

sure they wear shorts and a tee shirt, but I know a LOT of situations where women and girls wear very short skirts and jump around in a suggstive manner...heck dance recitials are much more provacative and objectify women than any young girl working as a waitress...don't you think? I think that competitions of dance and beauty pagents for young girls are a much worse situation to expose them to than a waitress at Hooters.

and living here in California, I can tell you for a fact that the waitresses are more covered up than the customers in the summertime.

It seems to be a matter of some people trying to force their vision of proper dress on others. and you might realize that a LOT of people don't think its a big deal.

RUM?

I wish my job would put me on paid leave until my retirement kicks in.

Just wanted to put this out there...about two years ago at one of our Special Olympic State Competitions, the local Hooters sponsored part of the event and provided the food. The girls (and guys) from the restaurant showed up to serve the food and cheer on the athletes. They were in their regular serving uniforms.

Are you sure you quoted the right person? I don't think the teacher should be disciplined for the Hooters thing. I wouldn't take my own kids to one, because we have tons of other places nearby to go to...and because of a situation that happened when my friend applied at a Hooters when it first came to our area. It has NOTHING to do with how the servers dress. We take our kids to sports bars to eat, don't see Hooters as any different really.

Regardless of what one may or may not think of Hooters, this appears to be the bottom line for most everyone. The punishment is over the top.

I'm confused, I just googled to see if there has been an update. In the article that said she was planning on retiring in January did not give her age, and then in another article that did not mention retirement it said she was 23? Anyone know what the details are?

Someone early on the thread said that they knew the teacher and that she was a great gal. Maybe she'll weigh in again?

yeah they cleared it up she is in her 50's and been teaching for 23 years.

I saw that, thanks. I still hope she's reinstated so she gets to go back for her farewell party (which I am sure they will have for her) and so she can say her goodbyes properly. The punishment is way over the top and I hope her 23 years of service counts for something.

they should have the party at Hooters!!

hehehehehheee

They cleared it as in she has nothing against her? or her suspension is up?
I was just wondering b/c I think this whole went too far..I mean it is just a restaurant - if they had went to the pool they would have seen women in a lot less clothing there ....I don;t think the teacher did anything wrong..my dd just told me that when they have trip or whatever the kids holler several places and they choose that way and when they say Hooters it's not shot down b/c of the attire but for other reasons ...:hippie:

I'm in with everyone who said "its a restaurant". :confused3 We need more people who dedicate their careers to teaching, and know good hot wings.

Unfortunately this thread is a microcosm of what went down.
99% of the parents had no problem with it whatsoever but the 1% minority who likely have never set foot in a Hooters get all up in arms and complain to the school who at that point have their hands tied.
The worst thing your kids are exposed to at Hooters is cholesterol.

No, the school board could've stood up to the 1% and said "that's ridiculous and silly and, as a community, we're not reactionary enough to make a deal of it. In the future we will ask teachers not to choose Hooters. Next item for discussion."

Why are we debating this at all? We're on a DISNEY forum. . .Disney is the place that had a club named Jellyrolls and while I realize that was an homage to Jellyroll Morton, the actual meaning of "jelly rolle" is far more. . .well. . .than "hooter".

I wouldn't mind if I heard a HS kid call breasts "hooters" but if that same kid started talking about "jelly rolls" on women. . .if I had any sort of responsibility for that kid, there would be a v. v. v. long discussion!

I don't even see why this is noteworthy. These are teens for goodness sakes.

That poor teacher...
