We've always had carpet in our houses and a are getting ready to get rid of the carpet in the living room and finish the wood floors. I'd like to get an area rug so it won't be too cold. Where its the best place to get one? How big do you get one? What type won't slip around or do I need to get a pad for that? Sorry if these sounds like dumb questions!

Some have a nonslip backing, some don't. Depends what you pick out. Can buy rug pads if needed....also at those same places.

My husband and I got two area rugs for our house to help cover the hardwood floors. All of the flooring in the house is original to the house which is about 100 years old but I like to have a little carpeting to the house. We got two rugs at Lowe's Home Improvement Store for $25 each in the carpet area. Both are Berber carpets. :)

Good info!

We replaced our living room carpet with wood and a 5x7 rug. It is wool with a non slip grip thing we purchased for underneath it. I love my rug and I am glad it can be dry cleaned as it has been numerous time and it has held up beautifully through three kids, two dogs and two cats :)

I bought all my area rugs from Home Goods. Wool for the bedrooms, Olefin for the family room. Rug gripper pad under both, it protects the wood floor.

Wool stains, Olefin cleans up much easily. Dropped red wine on Olefin, took out the windex cleaner and it came right up. Wool lasts for years. I have a wool area rug in my guest room that is 30 years old and it still looks brand new. I bought that before Home Goods was around. Spend an arm and a leg for it.

If you have children and this is for a family room, I would advise getting a dark back round colored area rug, or a very busy print rug.

Buying from Home Goods, allows you to bring it home try it out in the room to see if you like the colors, and bring it back if you do not. I tried three rugs before I was happy with the look.

The prices were fantastic for the sizes and quality.

I've purchased a couple of wool area rugs from Overstock that I've loved and got for a song. I bought an 8x10" wool rug in an oriental pattern for under $200 a few months ago. It's gorgeous.

It is a bit of a gamble not seeing them in person first because descriptions and colors can be misleading, but I stick to ones with several reviews and haven't had a problem. They have coupon codes all the time. I've been looking at them again because I'm going to buy one for my living room.

I have kids and pets. I'm happier with busy patterns and darker backgrounds.
