Are you sending your kids to school next month?

If every school mandates masks I would feel more confident about school’s opening. My school district is recommending it not requiring masks. For this reason my son will be doing virtual school. I don’t understand not making masks mandatory at all. My mask protects you and your mask protects me. Seems like something a school would want to teach.

I know my school district will not put “masks are mandatory everywhere” as a written part of their plan for fear of backlash from parents. We have to please everyone. We have been specifically told to have the kids wear masks as much as possible. My classroom, my rules.

These are unprecedented times; I so wish we could be kind and respectful of others. I will educate your child to the best of my ability, while providing them with a safe and loving environment. Please don’t ask me to make my health or the health of my family members less of a priority; that won’t happen. We should be equals.

I don’t think that people understand that for many people, sending kids back to school is not a choice. They simply CAN NOT stay home with their kids. Not if they want a roof over their heads and food on their table. A lot of us here, who take multiple trips to Disney and have disposable income for a nanny and/or the ability to stay home, aren’t seeing what others are going through. To say nothing of the child abuse that is taking place due to children being home instead of in school.

At a certain point we need to realize a few things. One: there may never be a vaccine. Two: we can never eliminate risk, we can only mitigate it.

I do understand that. I have sympathy and empathy for families that are in difficult situations. I feel for those that have to work and are greatly impacted by their kids being out of school. My heart hurts for any child in an abusive situation (school or no school). The thing is, though, I do not feel that I should sacrifice my child's well being to solve this problem. It is a very legitimate and serious problem and these issues deserve attention. Our leaders should address these problems. I agree they need to be addressed...but the answer cannot be to sacrifice the health and safety of all kids. If going back isn't safe, then it isn't safe. Putting kids in harm's way, isn't the solution to working parents or to child abuse..

If the schools are going to do alot of teaching virtually, they need to step up and actually get online and teach. I have 2 in high school. My son's English teacher never went online once. Both of their teachers mostly went on twice a week for under a half hour, that's not teaching. They said the majority of work given to them by the teachers was "busy work", including having the kids go on the Kahn Academy. Honestly, I didn't see alot of effort by the teachers, which is very disappointing, and I know alot of parents that felt the same way.

I totally agree with you. And our teachers are being required to do so every day for the full class time, at least in my district(s). What happened in the Spring won’t be allowed to happen again.

Unfortunately, a lot of people won’t believe this article is true until schools in their own neighborhoods start closing with sick kids and adults as a result of opening. Everyone wants kids back to school like normal. But it isn’t normal and won’t be for quite a long time yet. This thing is now spiraling and we aren’t doing very much as a society to help stop it.

I keep hearing "kids need to go back" over and over. It will not be like pre-covid school, and I think it will quickly be shut down if we go back full steam ahead, as soon as someone gets sick.

I also feel we are not doing anything to stop this. I had read that if everyone committed to wearing masks and quarantining for 8 weeks we could basically eradicate the virus. Not sure if it's true, but if it is, why the heck aren't we trying this?

Heading back to face to face school should not even be on option on the table. I’m sorry this is happening. These are not normal times. It will not be normal times for a long time. The sooner society accepts that, the sooner we can get on with fighting the virus. So much of this reminds me of a toddler having a tantrum, kicking and screaming because he can’t get his way. No amount of kicking and screaming is going to change the trajectory of the virus. Only mitigation strategies will do that. Keep the kids out of school!

I know my state bowed to the threat of not getting any federal funding if we stayed closed. It's an awful shame that this threat was made.

Good luck trying to get N95 masks. Maybe that’s what the teacher’s unions need to negotiate. Teachers will go back to in-person instruction, but they need adequate PPE, including medical grade N95s.

They need to do something if teachers will get thrown on to the front line like this. I am hoping they can find some. One of my friends is a pre-K teacher and she's desperately searching for them.

You mean, like, they should be asking for this instead of defunding the police, medicare for all, etc? I could get behind that. I could get behind putting the same effort into getting PPE for teachers that we put into making all those ventilators.

My wife is a middle school teacher. The thought of having to deal with these types of procedures for months is scary and exhausting. Add in the daily thoughts of “what mistakes did I make today that could have infected us?” The anxiety level alone of having to be on-guard constantly for hours to reduce infection risk, while also having to manage a classroom, attend to the educational and emotional needs of the students, likely be the custodian for the classroom and the myriad other things teachers deal with even in regular times, is probably going to take a huge emotional toll on my wife if she is forced to go back to face-to-face. Also given that there will likely be some type of hybrid model in my wife’s county in Florida, there will be all the extra stress of having to handle both in-person and virtual students at the same time. All this for 40k a year!

The Florida's Teachers Unions have filed a lawsuit against DeSantis arguing that schools are not "safe and secure" to open in the middle of a pandemic. Providing "safe and secure" schools is Florida law....and so they're going after DeSantis on that front.

This is how it's going to go folks....

For any teachers here. What items would you like the parents to start looking for and stocking up on now to send in to help? Sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, masks, shields, gloves, other items not mentioned? What would you need more of that the school district won’t supply or not enough of you would like? Want to help out my son’s teacher in the fall but don’t know who he’ll have yet so asking here.
