Are you Proud to be an American?

Most of the time absolutely but there are moments that I have been embarassed mostly because of our gov't but also because of how some of my fellow countrymen behave. I don't like the whole "America is the greatest country on earth everyone else is a distant 2nd" behavior.

This is the way I feel too. I am glad I live in America but I am not blindly proud (not saying anybody here is either). America has done many, many, many things that don't make me proud to live here and there are many countries that I think are just as good as America in their own ways. America has also had some brilliant, shining moments. It's 50/50 for me.

I am grateful that I live in a country where I am free, have opportunities and rights and feel safe most of the time. That isn't exclusive to America, however. There are a lot of great countries in the world and most of them have had their positives and negatives in the course of history.

So I am glad I live in America and at times I am proud of being an American but there are also times when I am ashamed by America's actions.

I couldn't have said it better than this. Thanks. I feel exactly the same way.

Not really. I think we (Americans) as a whole are arrogant, self centered, megalomaniacs who think they are better than the rest of the world.
And if i could move i would move. Looking into it actually.

Where would that be?

I'll say it. THIS IS THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! and yes, I truly believe this.
Every night when I say prayers with the girls I say "Thank God for having us born in the United States, the best country in the world". I have always been hugely patriotic.
We all have bumps along the way but always come together when it is important.

I'm certainly grateful to be an American, and I certainly believe in its founding principles. But I also recognize that U.S. history has its fair share of violence and social injustice. I feel an obligation as a citizen to participate in current political processes, thus contributing to those founding principles and putting my faith in a government system that's flexible enough to correct its past mistakes.

So, I guess I'm more likely to say I have faith in America than to say I'm proud to be an American. I'm proud of things I have accomplished as an individual. Being an American isn't so much an accomplishment as it is being placed in a (fortunate) circumstance and contributing to a political process.
