You guys aren't missing much. Think older men wearing sequins, strutting down the street, playing in a string band -- for over 12 hours!

And these sequin outfits look like showgirl outfits--most guys look like they are ready to go drag

I hope I can find it on our channels, sometimes it isn't shown here. It is a fantastic parade- the walking along in costumes and shaking the traditional umbrellas is only a little entertaining, but the shows that the groups put on are amazing!

My dad is watching it out in his room...I can hear the music. I remember growing up, I thought this parade was never going to end...lasted ALL DAY! My parents loved the string bands, which come on later in the show. I, personally, have never turned in on to watch.

I prefer the Hummers parade in Middletown DE!!

Amen to that. I can't stand them.

It sure doesn't sound like anything I'd want to watch.

This is a "mummer".

It's probably because I'm not originally from the Philadelphia area, but I've never seen the appeal of the Mummers. They're not cheap either. Seven or eight years ago, I took a look at pricing for an event we were having at work. Back then, it was $12,000 for one of the brigades to appear at a non-profit event. Our entire budget for the event was nowhere near $12,000!

The Mummers were extremely popular years ago. When I was a kid, watching the Mummers was THE thing to do on New Years Day. These days, not so much. The younger generations just don't get the whole Mummers "thing".

Truthfully, I don't care much for them, but members of my husbands family LOVE them. In fact, his cousin had a string band at his wedding :confused3 . Go figure....different strokes.

May I also add, that some of the participants are drunk as a skunk? Ok, so the "real" mummers will blame it on the comic brigades, but I can't tell ya how many times I see a mummer walking down the street with a bottle in his hand... I have even seen some pee in the street.

They walked past my workplace for a few years while I was working. It wasn't always pretty.

I will say, though, that the preparations for this event are tremendous. They work hard and it is a very expensive deal to be in the parade.

My wife says I don't get it because I am not from south Philly. She is.

An annual tradition in our house when I was a kid to watch that parade years ago, have not seen in a long time. I see it is on DirecTV on WGN later today.

for info and the history of the mummers go to www.mummers.com

I grew up in Philly and never liked the mummers or the parade
