Are You A Recliner??

Hmm interesting picture!

Maybe it's the perspective of the photo, but from where I'm sitting it seems more significant than that.

We're on a JetBlue Airbus.

I guess when you've been in the same seat for a cross country flight every inch of space feels like a foot.

You can probably put your popcorn away :)

Cool pic though..thanks for sharing!
Different planes/airlines may do it differently. I generally fly Delta and have only seen those 2-3" of recline. That's why I'm usually amazed at those who complain about how much room a reclined seat takes up. I took the picture shortly after another thread about reclining went on for a bunch of pages. So I still think the popcorn is needed. I wonder if I can use peanut butter. ;) Those of you on the Community Board should get that joke.

The last flight I was on, the woman next to me totally scolded the person for reclining. (With French accent) "hey! No."

Hrumph. If someone had said that to me I might have presented my posterior and invited her to 'embrasse ca.'

If we weren't supposed to recline, the seats wouldn't recline. I don't recline my seat when meals are served. But I do if I'm sleeping. When I fly, if I'm not eating, I'm sleeping.

again... everyone has the right to recline their seat.
yes even a 3yr old.
he may not touch the floor but he may want to lean back slightly.
spring for first class if others reclining their seats is that much of an inconvenience

I've been in first class on USAirways, it's just as bad. It's difficult to get up to use the rest room with the seat in front of you reclined. Then people get mad if you touch their seat getting up.

I don't recline and while I'd prefer the person in front of me didn't either, it's not a big deal if they do. I'd rather be behind a recliner than in front of one of those people who use the seat in front of them as a grab bar when they're getting up. THAT drives me nuts!

so true. i have had people hit me in the head, pull my hair, and make my head jerk because they want to pull on the back of the seat to get up.

Oh my...I definitely didn't know this was a previously heated topic :confused3

Sorry...

I certainly know that people have a right to recline. That's why the seats recline! However I still don't enjoy a recliner in front of me. That's all.

As I was sitting there I really got to wondering if I was the only person who never reclined in a world full of recliners :rotfl:

They should disable the recline on all seats in coach due to the latest round of removing leg room on most airlines.
That would cause a huge controversy. I remember I was on a cross country flight on USAirways and I was in the exit row. A woman got on and her seat was in the row in front of me and she discovered her seat didn't recline. She threw a big fit. The FA told her unfortunately the flight was sold out and she could not be moved. Some plans have a lock for that row that the FA can unlock once the plane is at cruising altitude (and then lock it again for landing).

I don't find that reclining gives me any extra leg room. It may give the illusion of more space but it doesn't move the bottom of the seat back at all so not sure I understand the "I'm tall" thing.

I will recline my seat if I am sleeping (redeye) and I am not bothered by those in front of me that do recline their seats. :confused3

No, you didn't just bring that conversation into the issue!!!!! Shame!!! Too funny.

The seat reclines.....so, people are allowed to recline. BUT....when they do, it should be slowly vs slamming it back. I remember o e flight where I had bent over to get something out of my bag...that's when the person in front of me quickly reclined. Man, I got the seat right in the face as I was returning to an upright position!
I seldom recline. Bit, if I do, I check who's behind me. If its a kid, then I'm not terribly concerned. If its someone working on their computer, or a larger person, I tend to just not recline. And when I do recline, it's usually just a bit.

My DH and myself are both recliners. We intentionally do not sit in non-reclining seats so that we are permitted to. I don't see why one should be upset with someone reclining m

Most airline seats recline a lot more than 1-2 inches, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. The exception would be in the first exit row seats and airlines such as Spirit, whose seats do not recline.

It is extremely annoying to have the person in front of you completely recline their seat for the entire flight, but it's their right to do so.

We only fly once a year...usually Delta, American or Jetblue...throw in the occasional carribbean or aeromexico.

The seats I have seen only go back about as far as the pic that was posted.
I am short and small and having that tiny bit of room taken away from me is no big deal. I also rarely recline because adding that tiny bit of space does nothing. I rarely sleep on planes.

I recline. Not much, but I do it. The seats usually hit me just right where I am super uncomfortable if I don't recline it back a bit. Otherwise I end up in pain and barely able to stand when the flight is over.

I also don't mind if other recline as long as they do it carefully. Don't just throw the seat back, but no way am I going to tell them they can't recline. The seats recline so it's only logical that people may use that feature.

On the new AA seats they have a cradle mechanism, so as you recline the seat bottom actually slides forward and reduces your own legroom, minimizing the intrusion behind you to about 1"-2" while still allowing the normal 4"-5" of recline (depends on seat position and aircraft), and it also gives the person behind you more legroom. Since I'm 5'11", but have legs the same length as my best friend who is 5'2", I of course recline - I don't need the legroom, but do need the slight recline to keep myself comfortable on a long flight (it's a hazard of my body proportions, if I don't get to recline I have a lot of weight on my not so large tailbone at the same angle for too long). I have had a broken seat that If the recline feature is broken, and didn't recline a few times, and have been reseated and one time even rebooked on a later flight because of it (right before door closing, the ground crew had to be called back to pull my bag out of the hold). I also usually fly in Main Cabin Extra on older 737's, and on the newer 737's I fly next to the blocked seat behind the exit rows. If I'm on an A321T I'm in MCE (daytime) or business (overnight), and international almost always business.

FYI, if you have a broken recline (this is not the same as a disabled recline, which is required by the FAA on the rows immediately in front of the exit rows), it's considered the same as a broken seat belt or missing/broken life jacket, and the airline is not supposed to fill the seat until it's recertified by maintenance.

I recline except During the meal service. I haven't figured out how to get out of my seat without pulling on the seat in front if they are reclined . . . my body doesn't bend those ways. If the set in front is not reclined, I can usually manage.

We'll be trying premium economy on our net Lufthansa TA in the hope the extra legroom works.

There exists a product to keep recliners at bay: http://www.gadgetduck.com/goods/kneedefender.html

But on most airlines, if you're caught using it, it's often a lifetime ban from the airline. And since they have the name on your ID, DOB, and other identifying information, the airlines are one place that can genuinely enforce a lifetime ban.

I rarely recline, only on redeye flights if I'm sleeping. I always feel bad for the person behind me! If the seat behind me is empty, then I'll recline if I feel the need, but otherwise, no.
