Are the filets really disappearing?

I don't believe Askerhus was opened then and I'm not sure about Biergarten. They spent most of their time in the English and French restaurants. The food was more on par with Victoria and Alberts. Children were not encouraged to eat at the restaurants.

 Wow, would that be a different experience!

Personally, I'd be happy enough if they'd just make the table service restaurants more like the signature ones, make the signature ones a notch better, and make the family style ones more on par with the current table service restaurants. That would be "good enough" in my book.

But to have many different truly fine dining choices as you described above . . . [Where's a drooling smiley when you need one?]

Wasn't Norway added later - I don't know that Akershus would have been there at the time.

You're right! Norway was added in 1988, according to Allears.

I'm too young to really remember the heyday of dining at disney. I do remember eating at the Top of the World, and in the Empress Room? on the Empress Lilly as a child. The adults in my family really enjoyed the dining - we would book what was called the Gold Key or Grand Plan (much like today's plat and premium) mainly for the food.

I was, and still am, a steak lover and have them prepared plain or with simple seasoning, so even if I had been older, I wouldn't have fully appreciated the finer offerings. In my tastes, there are still some great steaks to be found on disney property, although I must admit I miss the prime rib that they used to have at Crockett's Tavern. None of the current restaurants at Disney can quite replicate that flavor.

I agree, there is some good food to be found. Honestly, when we first went, I expected to find chain restaurant quality at the very best. So I was pleasantly surprised by California Grill, Artist Point, and the other TS restaurants we visited that trip. But on our last trip, by the second week I was getting bored with the menus.

However, I think that was partly my fault. We certainly haven't delved into the ethnic restaurants quite as much as we should have. So this time we're trying some more of those, and we'll focus more on those (plus the Signatures) on future trips, I think.

Plus I hear good things about Flying Fish. Is it still considered a place to get a very nice meal?

They hsould have 180 days before to set the menu like we do!
That would be too complicated. There is no way restaurants will know what they're going to be able to serve 180 days out. There's sesonal ingrediants, availability of foods, etc. There's too much that could change between now and six months from now.

I am staying at the Poly in 2 weeks, will check for you guys then and post a pic of the menu.

We are eating at Kona in Oct so I hope the filet is still there
Will you be doing live dining reviews again? I really enjoyed them last time.

Didn't the mix of dishes change prior to free dining last year, then change back gradually afterward? Or am I misremembering?

As long as I'm not eating the same dessert every night, I'd be happy with beef everyday lol. Some trips include multiple visits to Cali Grill and Yachtsman. Can't comment on Flying Fish though, anything with fish in its name is a place I avoid - I don't enjoy eating creatures that live in the water, actually the smell of seafood makes me ill (I have to avoid the seafood section at the grocery store)

I NEVER eat steak at restaurants, but had the maple filet at Le Cellier last year (so did SIL) and thought it was heavenly. We made ADRs for our upcoming trip just to have it again and then we saw that it is no longer on the menu!:sad1: I do not like mushrooms so would not order the mushroom filet. Guess I will end up with fish at the steakhouse!;)

See, that's what I don't get. If they're going to offer a filet at all, and they don't put the disgusting :crazy2: mushrooms on until after its cooked anyway, then why can't they also offer the maple filet that sooooo many people love?? It doesn't make any sense to me...

Probably because the maple one is marinated I believe.

UGG... I booked KONA for my son's birthday and the "filet" dish is our favorite. Time for a new tradition, I guess.

The best thing we can all do about being disgruntled with the changes is to write Disney and let them know how unhappy we are with the decision to generalize all menus. By doing this, they no longer stand apart....they are just like everybody else.....BnL from Wall-E ringing a bell anybody?

Honestly though, even at my local Saltgrass, we are hearing there is a beef shortage and the price of filet will start going up very soon. A local Steakhouse in our area is now charging $100 for a 7 oz filet and lobster tail. :earseek:

You should definitely consider FF even if you don't like fish or other seafood. My DW and I ate there for our 1st Anniversary in June and had the most wonderful meal. While I am a fish lover and did have the rare Copper River Salmon, my wife does not eat fish at all and had what she considered to be the best NY strip she has ever had there. So, I can only recommend that you at least give it a try.

Bummer. I hope it's still on the menu at Kona next month...My DH likes them because he doesn't like fat on his steaks. I mean, he can cut around it on a strip, but it still kind of grosses him out.

My DH is the same way, and we had reservations for Kona for next Wednesday night. Because of all I was reading here I called the Poly to find out what the filet situation is. They told me that after Saturday (tomorrow) the filet will no longer be on the menu. So I called Disney dining and canceled our Kona ressie. They even asked why I was canceling, and I told them exactly why.

I'll be curious to see if it comes back.

I wonder if Kona will be getting rid of the prime rib too?

Don't know. I know from a direct friend it will be gone from Boma shortly. I was told that it was a cost cutting measure, but supposedly the new york strip is an even better cut of meat. Right! Since reservations can be booked 180 days out, I guess they already went it and edited the description for Boma a while back, removing the word prime rib. This way no one can complain that they booked a reservation with a promise of prime rib.

Someone else mentioned on another thread similar to this one that Artist Point is pulling theirs too. Looks like this weekend is when this is happening. And I leave on Monday!! We are planning to eat at Narcossees and I will cancel if the filet is gone. We are NOT on the DDP and was willing to pay OOP for a nice meal, but the filet is my favorite at this location. I will check before we arrive. I'm sure I can post when I return, but we won't be home until Wednesday 8/20. I don't eat alot of red meat, but this cut was perfect for me.

I agree with a pp... we should all be calling Disney Dining and letting them know that if we're willing to pay for a fillet, we should be able to order it. Obviously it doesn't need to be on every menu, but steakhouses, hello, should certainly offer it. Artist Point, YC, Le Cellier. Even Jiko & CG, I can't imagine them not having fillet. :sad2:

And I'm sure they won't offer up a press release, but I'd certainly be more willing to accept "beef shortage" as a reason over "DDP".

Luckily, my only planned trip is during F&WF, and I'll just be grazing from the kiosks around the WS and at POTS. :goodvibes
