Are many of you worried about your weight and eating too much on your trip?

For us, not really. I know for one that in the heat I do not eat as much as I otherwise would. Heat really saps my appetite.

As for dd I'm not too worried as she doesn't eat like this or even close at home. I've never bought or kept junk food in the house on any regular basis. No sugary pops, fake juice, regular juice in strict moderation. Chips and ice cream only bought for special occasions for the most part. NO packaged baked goods or sugary cereals. Only whole grained breads etc. Just recently she was diagnosed with T1 diabetes so we need to make sure we carefully balance her carb intake with insulin (diabetes is about watching carbs, NOT sugar) and she eats healthily for her long term health. Right now she's on a very rigid insulin regimine that only allows a set amount of carbs per day. By the time we go to WDW she'll be on a more flexible regimine that will allow as many carbs as she wants as long as we balance it with insulin. So I do plan on letting her eat ice cream, dessert, etc. But within reason, just like I would no matter what her health is. So dessert with the meals and maybe one other ice cream bar etc per day. ETA-except for the ice cream, she will probably not finish anywhere near all of her dessert anyway, she doesn't seem to have a sweet tooth really. But she's a good eater anyway. When we went out to dinner the other day she didn't want anything on the kid's menu. Nope she wanted grilled shrimp like me. So I asked if they could do that and they made her a kids plate with a grilled shrimp skewer. Crazy sweet kid!

I see your point though. Ever since dd was diagnosed with T1 diabetes I've been reading tons on diabetes. While obesity/poor eating habits is not related with T1, it is very much related to T2 and I'm more aware of how much what we eat effects us. It makes me sad when I see a couple of kids at her school who are very overweight. I worry about their future. I worry about my dh who does NOT eat healthily despite the fact that I shop that way (he eat junk food all day at work). It's definitely a problem in our society. However it is up to the individual when you get right down to it. Yes, we need to make changes in our society, but people need to make the right choices themselves.

When you have diabetes you MUST watch your sugar intake. Carbs = sugar. When we digest carbs they basically become sugar in our bodies. There are bad carbs and good carbs. Carbs are brain food (good ones) thats why a diet that completly eliminates them is not good. (not talking about your case, just a little info). Anyway, you just have to be careful about too many sugars in your diet Such as those in ice cream and soda ect. both my grandmothers have diabetes. Type one (she takes the pill) and type two (she has the shot) and both have to be so careful because type one can become type two.

I thought that I would gain weight FOR SURE with the dinning plan last september. I've never eaten out for 10 days straight.... But all the walking we did must have totally countered all that eating! :) I didn't gain anything!

Well, I'm trying to lose weight over the next 6 months so I can gain it all back on our WDW vacation! LOL! So, I guess my answer is NO, I'm not going to worry about what I eat on vacation and I'm going to enjoy not having to cook for two whole weeks!

not us. we figure that we're doing so much walking at WDW that it doesn't matter what we eat. also we usually only have a big dinner anyway...lunch is small or snacky...

That's my strategy too! Only I have just 3 months to go, but I'll only be there for 6 days, so how much can I gain? Well, come to think of it, last time I managed to gain 7 pounds in 5 days-I'd better get moving!

I am a little overweight. I LOVE to eat. I LIVE to eat. On Valentine's Day, don't give me flowers, give me a gift certificate to go out to eat. Because even though I should weigh less, I know there will always be someone no matter where I go that is bigger than me. I can live with that!!!! Don't worry about it - have a good time!! popcorn::

*****When you have diabetes you MUST watch your sugar intake. Carbs = sugar.*****

Yes, I know. What I mean is that many people think it's JUST about sugar. When it's not. It's about carbs. Just like you need to watch candy, cake etc, intake, you need to do the exact same thing for bread, potatoes, pasta, etc. Basically anything that's not meat, cheese or most veggies.

We count exactly how many carbs she eats. Whether it's from a popsicle or a bowl of cheerios. Neither one is worse than the other. 15 grams of carbs from say some ice cream is the same as 15 carbs from some fruit or bread, etc. She gets 45-60 grams of carbs for each meal. Where it comes from doesn't matter much as far as her blood sugar goes. Now some people find certain foods raise their blood sugar more than others but it varies from one person to the next. I've found Goldfish crackers to make dd's numbers go up crazy for some reason. So a carb is a carb no matter what food it comes from. Of course some work faster and for not as long and others work slower and last longer, but they all raise the blood sugar the same amount etc.

So many people think it's JUST sugar and think you can't eat dessert. Not true. And BTW I think you have it backwards (typo?), every T1 I've heard of takes insulin injections and most T2's take oral medicine and SOMETIMES insulin also.

My daughter doesn't eat sugary foods every day (never did anyway) but just because she has T1 doesn't mean she can't have ice cream or a cookie on occasion just like every other kid. We just need to make sure it fit's in her meal plan and reduce the carbs from something else in the meal OR when she's switched to the other insulin, match how many grams of carbs she eats to how much insulin she takes (insulin/carb ratio).

Okay, I am a lifetime WW member, lost 28lbs, and intend on keeping it off for the rest of my life, however, when I'm on vacation I allow myself to eat at any restaurant I want (or DH wants), we had the dining plan on our April/May trip, and I only gained 1.4 pounds that trip. I took into consideration all the walking and swimming we did, but I also believe that a vacation is a vacation, and I'm not going to deny myself something I really want while on it. I brought water with me to the parks and made sure I drank my 6 - 8oz. servings of water everyday! As far as your child goes, allow him to have what he wants (in moderation) while on vacation....you won't buy it at home, so I don't see a problem with a little indulgence for vacations. I have to honestly say that I did steer away from the fattier, fried foods, but I did have fish n chips one day for lunch. I also allowed myself a cocktail every night, and 1.4 pounds I didn't see as a problem, and lost it all the first week back home.

I've lost about 30 pounds over the past year and a half, and I'd still like to lose 10 more pounds (though my husband says that I'm getting too skinny... the sweet thing ;)) But when we're at WDW, there is no way I'm going to even THINK about my calorie consumption! It's going to be August, so we'll be sweating a lot, swimming a fair amount and doing insane amounts of walking. I expect to stay the same weight or even drop a couple of pounds during our 6 day trip. Besides, it's a vacation -- I don't want to be bothered with everyday nuisances, particularly regarding my weight. Life is too short.. and the list of delicious foods that we'll be able to have for FREE is too long! :rotfl:

I just wanted to state the carb thing so people did not think they could eat sugar and it was ok. As far as the pill and the shots I was refering to my grandmothers everyones situation is different I am sure( the one who takes the pill used to require shots). My grandmother cannot have any thing with sugar for the most part. She almost lost her legs because her blood sugar really went up( they started to turn black) as a result of drinking diet sodas(which her doctor said was full of sugar) and not eating the way she should, anyway through prayer and a better diet she is ok now.

You seem to have everything under control with your DD wich is such a good thing. I know it can be difficult as my son is allergic to milk eggs and all dairy and i have to be so careful as to what he consumes.

I think Disney is the only vacation that I don't gain weight. I find we walk about 7-8 miles a day so, it's hard for those cheeseburgers to catch up to you. However, I'm wondering with the dining plan if people are eating more? I'll let you know after our December trip.

I'll be 8 months pregnant when we go...so far I've been really sick and have lost 10 pounds. So I basically feel like any weight I gain is forgiven. ;)

It's vacation...don't worry about money, don't worry about pounds! I can even things out when I get back home. For me, vacations are all about the pleasure.....

Me too! I plan to lose a few lbs just in case. We go in November, so if I don't gain it on our trip - I will over Xmas. Either way I'll be ready LOL. I lost 62 lbs 7 years ago and have kept it off. It has been a lifestyle change for our whole family, I closely watch what we eat all the the time, and our vacations and holidays are a break from that - we love to eat. We are only able to take a trip every 2-3 years and I am not going to worry about what we put in our mouths those 10 days - we'll make up for it before and after the trip. We also enjoy healthy foods and there are healthy choices at Disney restaurants, so we'll manage to squeeze some nutrition in. It will be a treat for us to be able to eat out and have the menu at our disposal - in fact, I think the DDP will help us eat healthier than previous trips - chicken fingers and fries are usually the cheaper items on the menu and with the DDP, I won't have to worry about prices (I also watch our $$ very closely at home) - and will be able to make choices based on our preferences. Sure we'll have more desserts -but hey - it's vacation - and there won't be any long term detriment to our health.

I see I am not the only one concerned about the weight gain. Usually I lose weight as my DH rarely wants to stop and eat. The rest of the family starves all vacation (seriously). But this time he is not coming and this time we have the DDP. I have lost about 25 lbs and plan to lose 15 to 20 more by the time we go Sept 30. I plan to eat fairly healthy, drink lots of water (I learned long ago never to drink my calories) and pick and choose my extravagances. DD and I will share several TS meals. We have two buffets - I will choose wisely, and then have a couple of zebra domes. I am unable to walk as much as I now have bad arthritis but I will swim some every day. But like the OP said, I think I gain weight just by looking at the pictures. popcorn::

This has been on my mind. On all my previous trips I've been thin, and if I ate everything I wanted, I would gain 3 pounds, and after a week back home it would be gone. But now, since having a baby, I've developed a thyroid problem and have 15 extra pounds that seem almost impossible to lose.

I DON'T want to diet on vacation. The food is such a fun part of a WDW vacation! But, I also don't want to sabotage my weight and heath to the point where I'm miserable and feel awful about myself when I get home.

I've decided that I'm going to indulge in my favorites, but only eat the things I REALLY want and love. For example, at my favorite restaurant, if they have my most favorite fattening thing on the menu, I'm going to eat it, but if there isn't anything on the dessert menu that sounds absolutely incredible, I'll skip it. If I don't see something I'm just dying to try on the menu, I'll just have a salad, rather than waste the calories on something that really won't bring me much satisfaction. I also plan to share alot of meals and snacks. I LOVE eating around the world in Epcot, but sometimes a bite is all you really need to satisfy the craving. (I learned that from reading French Women Don't Get Fat!)

Like others have said, I'm going to watch what I eat pretty closely before I go too, so if I do gain 2-3 pounds I can still fit into my clothes!

We didn't worry about caloric intake last fall and we even had the free dining - lots of food! Good news...we actually lost weight on our trip with all of the walking, sweating, and swimming! I consider Disney my "drop five" diet plan! I hope I can "drop five" this August for free dining!!! :rotfl:
