Are Diabetic snacks available?

I am T2 diabetic and wondering what type of diabetic snacks might be available outside of regular meals. During meals I can try and eat more protein and stay away from carbs and sauces as much as possible but I am thinking about between meals. Maybe some type of protein snack like nuts or protein bars? Otherwise I guess bring my own with but I am assuming any open packages of food would be banned from taking off ship when we disembark.

Which ship are you sailing on? The Classic and Dream classes have deck foods that might work including salads with protein. You can also get a hot dog, hamburger or grilled chicken without a bun. Cove Cafe offers light hors d'oeuvres in the evening. The Classics have shawarma, and they can make it with bread. No protein bars or packages of nuts, but nuts are for sale on the room service menu. Room service also offers a cheese plate and a salmon salad.

Perhaps get the individual snack packs or just smaller packs of nuts. It might be cheaper than buying them from room service. Then no open packages taken off the ship.

Some of the ships have Daisy’s Delites on the pool deck which offers simple salads (some with grilled chicken).

You could bring food storage bags or container and get items from Cabanas at breakfast or lunch and put it in the mini fridge (get some ice to help stuff stay cool, as they aren’t always the coldest units. Maybe a little soft side cooler to store snacks for the day.

Breakfast on the buffet usually has cold cuts and cheeses - if cheese is an okay snack.

We always travel with a box of protein bars, granola bars, and individual serving packs of planters nuts. They don't take much room in a suitcase, and can also be taken off the ship in most ports.

ETA: we don't have the diabetes noted on our reservation because we've found too many well-meaning servers don't understand T2 diet very well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do not mention diabetes as a diet restriction on the reservation either. I prefer to decide for myself what is best for me to eat. I am thinking that bringing protein bars and nuts with me is the best option.

With something like a box of protein bars where each bar is individually wrapped can the unopened bars be taken off of the ship?

Yes, each bar is factory-sealed so in most ports it will be allowed off the ship. No need to carry the whole box. That's why we do individual packets of nuts as well, instead of a can.

While on the ship you could take a trip up to buffet fill a plate and return to stateroom with a few nibley bits. Your fridge is small so bring a taller but small container for things you would not put into ziplock snack/sandwich bags. You can get fruits at Daisy Delights, and meats from other upper deck upto dinner time. I found the smallest plate and bowl too large for the fridge, too much tilting and spilling from them.

I’m not a diabetes diet expert but it seems like Daisy De-Lites would be a great option for snacks. They had lots of healthy options for breakfast and lunch. Things like mini sandwich/lettuce wraps, make your own quinoa or salad bowl (they’ll add whatever toppings you want, proteins, meats, veggies, etc), fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, yogurt, etc. I got most of my afternoon snacks from Daisy De-lites. Honestly I ate lunch and snacked there daily since eating at Cabanas or the MDR for 3 meals a day was way to heavy. This was on the Wonder but I assume that there are similar offerings on the other ships too.

I find it more easy on the cruise ship. You just tell there that you are diabetic and they prepare everything for you only
I’m curious what you had specially prepared? Was it the MDRs and you pre-ordered like allergies do? We’ve asked to hold sauces or more/less veggies or such. But I’m trying to figure out what you request for “diabetic” that they prepare separate. Our experience in requesting “diabetic” usually results in a bowl of fruit for dessert or such — I’m better off making my own choices and watching serving size.

I too am diabetic but also have food allergies. They are able to serve the plates found in the case but unable to make plates there. Other fast food areas on same deck can usually help me more. Like small amounts of protein with no bread.

I am good about picking my own foods and telling them what to not serve me.
I do pack my own snacks too for on the ship and shore excursions.

Only Daisy De-Lites could not make changes to its items for me. I have contact allergy for some items on the sandwich’s so they could not work around it. I probably could have assisted for a manager…but I already have the defamed name from birth. So I’m just going on a short walk across the ship in silence.

You can also take sandwich baggies to save cheese or cold cuts from breakfast for later in the day in your cabin. Have a great cruise.

Baggies are so much better for the frig. Absolutely not great at getting those tiny plates to fit inside there EVER. Actually going to bring tiny Tupperware, anything labeled snack size! Too many assorted health issues for my crew, but I’m learning how to adapt!
