Are 5.8 Ghz cordless phones really better?

My parents want a 5.8 for better reception and I am searching for one to give them for Christmas, but it seems that the ones that look the best are sold out (on walmart.com and amazon.com, etc.)

Are there certain brands that have a better reputation than others? I thought Uniden had a good rep, but what about GE or Motorolla, or Panasonic?

I think buying a phone is as bad as trying to decide on a darned vacuum cleaner!

I got a 5.8 about 8 months ago, and it's hardly any better than our "old" 2.4 cordless. I got the 5.8 since I was wireless networking the house, which also uses 2.4, so there wouldn't be any interference. Well, the phone gets kind of staticy (?) if one of the PC's is on.

Go Figure.

FYI, while they claim the range for the 5.8 phones is better, I don't think that is true; it's just a different frequency for less interference.

My phone is a GE.

Yes - this is why we went to 5.8 as well.

I was able to find a Uniden one at Target with a second handset and digital answering machine for $89. (a STEAL if you ask me). Works well...have no static problems what so ever.

Home networking is why I still have my 900MHz cordless phone. If you have a wireless network in your house, I imagine that a 5.8GHz phone would be better simply because is would not be sharing the same frequencies.
