April 29, 2012 ~ Aloha! ~ Wonder to Hawaii- who is with me?

There has been a discussion about this on the facebook group page with a decided tilt to the direction that lanyards do not count as FE gifts.

That us why I do not like having two group discussion locations for the same event. There are two conversations going on. I think one party decided not to participate in FE as a result--but that could be another cruise thread ( hard to keep track sometimes)

maybe someone can check in over there and clarify--Jackie?? Can you.

Jan :earsgirl:

What other cruise thread? I did not see one, but as is becoming obvious I am sure, I am a typical senior citizen who is technically challenged :)

Aloha! Welcome to the Hawaii cruise! We are super excited to have you cruising with us!:cool1:

Just made place reservations! Well..one of them. We are doing reward travel for one ticket and wanted to make sure we got what we wanted. I am going to watch rates over the next few weeks for the other that we are paying cash for.

We are flying the red eye home on that day we disembark. Does anyone know if there is a hotel in the LAX area that has a day rate?

It just would be alot of work to go sightseeing to kill time. Spending the day at the hotel would be just fine.

Threads for other cruises we are booked on or have taken. Not another cruise thread for this cruise. Complicated enough to have a DIS thread and a facebook page. I prefer one site for conversations for each event.

My own take on this is that people over on the FB thread should be encouraged to come over here to make decisions etc as it is actually a DIS cruise group. I know the person asking the question about lanyards did do that but got more replies over there. But this is the place to make arrangements and decisions really. I think the FB group should be more of a chat group really.

Hopefully Heather the FE organiser will become more involved eventually and some progress can be made with the FE groups which will help, but I know she has just changed jobs so will be taken up with that at the moment.

Good Morning, Happy Cruisers!

For what it's worth, my opinion is - what is decided on THIS thread is the group decision - facebook is a discussion, but it is NOT the DIS.

The whole point (for me) of joining the lanyard team IS to keep from having to pack, carry and deliver FE gifts. If people want to NOT give my cabin an FE gift because *all* I contributed was a share of the lanyards, then that is their option.

I've always put something in every FE in every hall (for the fun of it) whether that cabin was on my list or not, but I just can't do it any more .

Hope everyone has a lovely day of food fireworks and (for Americans) remembering what it is we are really celebrating today - The Independance of our Nation.

Happy Day, all!

Wishing Everyone A Happy And Safe 4th Of July !!

Oh it's not a senior thing, Pixiegran, I am not involved in Facebook at all. (I am discouraged by both my jobs from having a presence on facebook because of my work for youth and because of its infinite potential for providing too much intimate access to your personal life)-----plus I have to admit I'm not such a huge fan of the guy who created/owns the site so I'm not so in favor of supporting him. ;)

I agree. So I guess I'm confused. Has there been organizing going on the FB page about our activities like Fish Extenders, DIS Meets, etc.? (Isn't it odd to set up "DIS activities" on another website?! :lmao:) More importantly, though, if we aren't on facebook how are we supposed to know what is going on or anything? I thought that was the point of the DIS. :confused3 I guess if the majority of the planning is happening on facebook rather than here on the DIS, then Jason and I will have to pull out of some of the activities, as well, because we won't know what's going on, what group we're in for fish extenders, or what the new rules/parameters are that are being set up.

So happy 4th of July to anyone/everyone who is celebrating such (or at least enjoying a day off from work if you're lucky enough to get one!! :thumbsup2)

I thought I'd post my obligatory update/reminder about lanyards while Jason is in the shower.

We are inching VERY close to the 200 mark for people who have requested lanyards so far (as of this morning we're up to 196 people!!). If you want to check to make sure that you and your party are on the list and that your information is correct, click this link: DCL HAWAII LANYARD LIST.

If you are not on the list yet (or need to make a change/correction), remember that these lanyards are FREE to everyone from the DIS (and their traveling parties) who want them. All you have to do is email me some very basic information (DIS name(s), first name(s) and room #'s) to dcl.hawaii.lanyards@gmail.com

Folks still have plenty of time to request lanyards if they want them---I will probably make the cutoff sometime in early February 2012 so that I have time to get all the supplies in order and Jason and I can actually complete the project (and maybe ship them to ourselves in LA, as well).

Bob was a teacher and I worked at the high school for a couple of years. I choose not to be a part of Facebook for multiple reasons, some of them mentioned by Jason, even though friends and family have asked me to 'friend them'. I would be interested in hearing from those who use Facebook as to why they prefer to communicate there instead of here about our cruise. Is there some reason you prefer that site? I ask because I have never used it so don't know what advantages it might have.

Since I haven't read it myself, I also need to ask, have decisions about this groups activities actually been made over on Facebook? Is it more then just individuals sharing their plans? I don't believe anyone intended to exclude or hurt peoples feelings, but I think it is very important we clear this up so as not to have a riff here. The more excitement generated through talk about this cruise the better for all of us. However, I agree that DISboard group decisions and the sharing of ideas leading to those decisions should be made on the DISboard. VAL

There has been an awful lot of discussion over on the FB page that was set up for this cruise. I really don't know if actual decisions have been made though as I am involved with our September cruise at the moment so haven't been on that one over much. My reply was to Jan who was talking about a post on lanyards and FE gifts over there but the lady that asked the question also asked on here. I just thought that because it is a Dis cruise meet then everything other than chit chat would be better here for the reasons you state. Perhaps someone who frequents that page more would know more.

This is the first Disney cruise that I take that I do not participate in the discussions here. There are so many pages of information and lots of general chatter that finding relevant information pertaining to the actual planning of events is difficult.

I do check in to lurk at the Facebook page because it is much easier to see information without the chatter.

Just wanted to share why I haven't been active here. I do feel lost and wish that relevant information pertaining to activities was easier to follow.

I may be able to offer some info here....

Facebook vs, DIS use ---

FB is much, much easier for me because I often have trouble with loading DIS. It's fast, convenient, can be loaded anyplace (best way to communicate when I'm traveling because of that). This may be unique to me, but I have issues with the DIS often - not only does it usually take forever to load when I'm on a computer other than at home, but I will often get a server too busy notice, or it may be very slooooow.

On FB it is more than easy to chat because it is easily accessible, and I'm on it frequently because of my family (pics from afar) and my work.

As for decision making going on there...not really!!! :thumbsup2 Personally, I have only seen chatting. Sometimes someone may duplicate info there because others may be on FB more (it's a means of communication in a lot of areas - family, friends, work, news, etc.)....I have several groups there that I chat with as well, from work to recipes to cruises!

Privacy issues are easily controlled on FB, by the way.
There are a zillion ways to control it using their features on the site. I'm a retired teacher, and a bit of a private person anyway, so I basically control privacy issues by employing a few simple rules....

I never put anything personal or private on the site to begin with (you don't need a lot in your profile), I never use the applications (cause for spam & privacy issues), and I never open links that are posted unless I know it is a trusted site. That's it, in a nutshell - no privacy invaded, when caution is used.

But I do love the DIS and try to visit daily (I have 3 planning boards going!), and 3 FB groups for upcoming cruises - it just adds to the excitement & I get to associate FACES with DIS usernames - that part is great!!

Hope this offers some info as to why FB is helpful for some of us. :goodvibes

.

This may be just my opinion but.....

If you go to Facebook is there a site that anyone who joins FB can go to, called something like the DCLHawaii cruise?

If that is the case, I feel a separate group as been formed and it is not just people sending private PM's or e-mails and discussing this cruise. That is fine and I think it is similar to the situation where you may participate and be a part of our DISboard group but you also are a part of the Cruise Critic group that is on our cruise. But, any activities discussed or planned on the Cruise Critic board, or FB does not represent the Disboard group. How could it be otherwise - it is a separate web site that not everyone who is on DISboards has access to - it is Cruise Critic or Facebook but not DISboards.

I appreciate that the DISboards is not always as technically as smooth as I would like. For example the fact you can't just cut and paste a picture in is a pain. Also, I know the inability to post a copy of a spreadsheet is a problem. But it is my choice to stay with DISboards instead of planning my activities on another site with another group.
