Good morning everyone. Happy Monday!

How was the day of cooking? What kinda things did you make? Learning to cook from my mom is an adventure....."put in some of this until it looks right......some of this until it tastes right.....some of this until it's thick enough....."

try to repeat THAT recipe!!! :)

The only Norweigan foods I know can be found at Epoct in the bakery.....chocolate cake, pretzels with raisins and glaze and almonds, coca-cola. ;)

Good morning,

There were about 30 realatives at my Aunt's house and my dad taught everyone to make Lefsa. Lefsa is a potato tortilla. On the farm they had potatoes but no yeast so they made a Norwegian flatbread. After you cook the lefsa, you put "oleo" (as my dad would say) and sugar and they are actually quite good.

He also makes krunkukles (sp?) a crisp cookie, but we didn't have time. It was really touching that so many people came to carry on "Uncle Andy's " tradation. My dad is 77 and not in the best health so this was great.

When he rests and recovers from teaching everyone how to make lefsa, he's going to teach my girls to make crepes. (I really dislike cooking ...so the girls learn from my parents).

Got to get the littelest one ready for school.

That sounded like it was a pretty fun day. :) The older generations have so much to teach if we just take the time to listen. :)

I make crepes at least once a week! :) Whenever dh is on call during the week he has to stay at the office until he's done seeing patients (this time of year it means 9:30-10pm) No point in me making a big complex dinner for myself and the kids, so I make crepes and we fill them with whatever we want. I like butter, jam, and Reddi-whip. :) Dd likes butter and syrup (she cuts hers up) or butter, Reddi-whip, honey, and cinnamon sugar. Ds likes his with butter, Reddi-whip and Nerds. ;) :rotfl2:

Of course, I probably cheat....I use one of these:

Hi,

I think you do "cheat", however I admire you for making them. When we learn we'll "cheat" too. I know my dad uses soda water and this old pan that he's had forever. Usually we buy crepes at the mall.

Middle dd stayed home today. She's better, but she says she has stomach cramps. I'm a germapho so I have disinfected the whole house.

morning all!

Kids are off to school, I have a huge Minnie Mouse mug filled with hot coffee in front of me, and it's time to DIS, baby!! Don't have to get ready for work for a while, so I can just sit here and do nothing for a while! Yay!! :cheer2:

that's wonderful, Jen! My mother does not like to cook either, and everything I know I have learned from my grandma. I will always treasure the times I have spent with her in the kitchen. I just watched her when I was little and then as I got bigger, she let me help her more and more! I have learned a lot from her, both cooking and baking! She has passed away now but that is something I will always remember! We always had the best talks too while we were cooking! I miss her! :sad1:

Hubby is sick with something stomach related, but went to work anyway. Now he's calling me all the time, telling me how horrible he's feeling!! :sad2: I am not sympathetic. Told him if he wasn't feeling well to come home and stop calling me!

Hope your DD will be better by tomorrow! After my kids heard that dad wasn't feeling well, they tried to fake being sick too, so they wouldn't have to go to school. They felt fine before he called! :rolleyes1 Needless to say, they are both at school!

thanks guys!! All this talk about crepes got me hungry! I have to lose weight before the cruise, otherwise I am going to make the ship sink!!

New rule: No more talking about food on this thread! :lmao:

So far today my kids have finagled (sp) a snow day. You guys haven't learned this about us yet.....we homeschool. The kids have been outside all morning playing in the snow, making a snowman, and shovelling the driveway. It's not often we get a decent amount of snow around here, so I'm letting them go for it. Of course, their dad will get home at 1pm today and ask "did you get your school done yet?" uh....no. :lmao:

Well you guys sound so much fun - its going to be great sailing with you - Im really shy so you will have to excuse me!!!! This is our first cruise so ive loads to learn - we are both really excited about it.
Weather here in the uk is really cold but at least its not raining!!!

forgot to say - you would be laughing at me as i have some scraps of paper in front of me with notes on who is who - I am terrible at names, faces, places etc so I am really having a hard time keeping up and to be honest there are about 6 or 7 main posters so far so heaven knows what will happen later (a notebook maybe) the sad part is that i still wont remember who is who in 15 months time!!! 66 weeks - that sounds sooooooooooo much better:cool1:

Member Gallery Update!

I'm happy to announce that we've had some additions to our photo gallery.

Karen (ohiominnie) sent in a new picture of her family.

Fi (floridahippy) sent in info and a picture of her and DH Pete.

Heike (dreamcometrue) sent in info for her family and is looking for a picture.

Fi - I'm really bad with names and faces as well that is one of the reasons we do the gallery and buttons. Another suggestion for everyone is that if your signature doesn't already have your first name in it that might help. That way as we correspond we can use first names and really get to know each other. After all once we are on the ship I'd much rather hear "Hi Mary" than "Hi WDWLVR".

Jen - I think it is wonderful that you all had a cooking class. Passing on family traditions and something that is often lost in this day and age.

Hi!! Nice to meet you! This is our first Disney cruise too! I am glad I am no longer the only cruise-virgin on this thread! :rotfl: I am kind of shy too at first. But once I get to know people, I won't shut up! :rotfl2:

Where abouts in the UK are you from? I grew up in Germany, and we went on a student exchange program to Redding, England. It was tons of fun!

Hi,

When we went on the Western cruise this past March, we were in Parrot Cay on formal night. My husband was in a tux and I would have liked to have been in Lumiere's or even Animator's.

What night is formal night on the Eastern? My TA's husband passed away about 2 weeks ago so I won't call her for a couple of weeks to request the dining rotation.

Thanks,
Jen

YIPPIE! Someone from the UK! My dd will LOVE to meet you!!! She's 12 and somehow or another she has perfected a British accent!! (see, it IS good if you let your kids watch too much TV!) :rotfl2:

Anyway, true story, we went on a cruise once and KT decided to talk with her accent the first day. She had everyone going....INCLUDING one of the kid's club counselors who was FROM the UK. When they asked where KT was from, she honestly said "London." Ok, so she didn't offer that it was London, Ohio!!! Anyway...the whole first night she talked like a Brit. Then she felt kinda bad for deceiving everyone so the next day she went in and explained that she wasn't really from London, and the British accent was just something she picked up. Guess what....THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE HER NEW STORY!!! They said "you're from the UK" and "you just learned a Midwest accent!!" :lmao:
