I am trying to convince DW that we need to rebook before we leave the ship so that this can be avoided. But, the responsible adult in me knows that it is probably not possible. I remember the feeling all to well from our last cruise.

We've never even cruised before, and we want to rebook on board! We'll probably do a dummy date and keep pushing it back for a few years--if we can stand to go that long without DCL!

Same here. It may be 2-3 years before we can cruise again, but I do plan on booking - I want that on board credit for next time! Just makes me wonder what DCL will pull out of their sleeves with those new ships too. I've already told DH if they go to Alaska, we are THERE. Though it's quite a few years off, still something to think about!

My pitch to DH for rebooking went like this:

Me:"We need to rebook onboard you know."
DH: "Why? It could be years before we return"
Me: "But if you rebook onboard, you get a discount and on board credit. Think of the savings"
DH: (insert eye rolling here)
Me: "Savings! Do you hear that word? We could save a lot of money! Plus if we transferred to another travel agent during their promotion time, we may get an even better deal and that's LESS money out of pocket."
DH: (blink, blink)
Me: "I really think we should. We can always move the dates to a better fit months later. Think about all the money we'll save. If we don't book onboard, we'll lose those credits."
DH: "You read too much on those boards you visit."
Me: "Your point is....???"

Surprisingly, I didn't have to do much to talk DH into rebooking! Once I told him about how much more we had to pay by booking so late (only three months out), he agreed to rebooking--but only if we can keep pushing it back (and transfer to TA with more OBC). I don't know if he truly believes me that you can do it that way, but he'll get his confirmation on that when we do rebook! He was shocked when I told him others have paid THOUSANDS less than we did just becuase they planned further ahead than we did.

(And no, you don't read too much on those boards--it's never too much! Especially if you're a thread stalker! )

Does anyone know when you rebook on board how much of a deposit do you have to give them? Also does anyone know how many times you can move your reservation and still keep your discount and onboard credit?

Anyway, my DH already knows the drill with rebooking. We have a $200 OBC just waiting for us when we get on the Magic. We have another booked for our 10th anniversary in December '08 (another SPH), but I might be booking a 4-night with my mom and sister. The deposit is the same as any other cruise ($250/person for 7-nights and $200/person for 3 or 4-nights).

Also does anyone know how many times you can move your reservation and still keep your discount and onboard credit?

I think you can move it as many times as you want to, but you need to make sure that the original booking is not cancelled because then you will lose your OBC (from what I've read on the main board, anyway). So I'm going to (hopefully) remember to double check that I still have the OBC when I do move it around.

You are correct! You can move your booking around, as long as you don't cancel. I have a friend that rebooked onboard in October for April '08, then when the December dates came out, she moved her booking and kept her discount and her OBC.

And I think you can also book reservations up to the number of passengers you have on that particular sailing. We have four people--2A/2C--so we could book up to four different times and even put them in other people's names, like any friends, grandparents, etc. that would want to go in the future. But the deposit for those other people still needs to be made at the time of rebooking (and then they pay you back). I'm not sure, though, if you can change the names on them, so be sure they definitely want to go before you shuck out the bucks for their deposit.

If I'm incorrect on any of this, someone please straighten it out. This is all just my understanding of how things work since I have not actually experienced any of it yet, and also then I would get it right in my head for if/when we do rebook for someone else on board.

That reminds me - DH was telling our parents what I surprised him with at Christmas, and the first words that my parents said were "Are you taking us too?" I told them they were more than welcome to go, but they'd be paying a lot more than we did. They've never cruised either, and I think the idea of DCL appealed to them, but really did once we told them we were going. I am going to ask them before we leave if they are remotely interested, so we can do the deposit onboard, and set up a future cruise. Don't have to worry about the in-laws though. She refuses to fly, and doesn't like boats. Guess they'll just have to stay home then.

Sometimes it's not so bad leaving the in-laws home! (Not in my case, though. My MIL is great! ) My mom & stepdad were the same way when we told them we wanted to do DCL for our 10th. They had just watched the show on Travel Channel and wanted to go soooo bad! They decided to "let us go" this time since it's special to us, but they definitely want to go next time. I told them they don't have to have little kids to go, and they said, "But we want to go with Hudson and Lennon!" And since it's not really fair for them to go and not DH's mom and stepdad, then maybe we should try to plan so we all go sometime. They better make up their minds before we leave if they want to save! DH didn't want us to book for them, but it could save them tons, so I'm suggesting we do it. We'll see...

Well Val, I must say, my in-laws are fabulous too. But they'd just never, ever go on a cruise. They go to the beach every single year during the 4th of July and that's it. Have no desire to go anywhere else unfamiliar. I'm definitely not that way though. There's a whole world out there to explore, and I want to see atleast some of it. Oh, and speaking of in-laws, mine are my neighbors. When we built, we decided to go near them on purpose, due to the peace & quiet on the farmland. Good thing we all get along. The only thing that bothers us now are the cows mooing late at night sometimes.

HEY! I JUST GOT A GREAT IDEA! How does this sound...Cruise with my mom & stepdad one week and then do a B2B with DH's mom & stepdad for another week! And then to make it even better, we could have another week all to ourselves after that! A B2B2B! Do you think it's been done before?!?!?! I saw on the main board that someone is doing the 14-day transatlantic and then the first 11-day Med. 25 DAYS!! Could you imagine? What it must be like to be rich...

hey gang -- i'm having a claustrophic feeling of overwhelmingness of things i must get done in one month! eek!!

i'm not sure we get to rebook, we rebooked this date and said 'we'll push it back maybe' and then just couldn't bring ourselves to do so! we are cruising with no 'special' days just to be cruising! i'm going to drop MAJOR hints about rebooking a dummy date to push out to the new ships in 2012; then i can celebrate my 40th on a new ship! but i know Preston has other destinations he wants to enjoy with our girls before Taylor graduates in just 3 years! but hey -- i'm good with a couples only cruise on 2012

Wasn't there some discussion of having a DISmeet indoors, at about 3pm, before the Sailaway, maybe the Promanade Lounge, since it would be a tad cooler. Then heading up to the party afterwards.

what about safety drill at 4 p.m.? should we just say meet in the Promenade Lounge following the safety drill?

anyhow -- if I may ask Paula and Kip -- are you by chance going to Palo tuesday night?

if so, then for our linked late dining group -- Val and Justin are the only families NOT in Palo on Tuesday! oh my! and really this matters to me b/c my girls want to eat in the dining room with the families the night we are in Palo. just something to chew on for the late night DIS linked dining group
