Our old router has been wonky for months now and we didn't figure out what the issue was until it completely died today.

We have 3 Apples and one PC. I would like to get an Apple router (Airport Extreme) but we need an external hard drive storage/back up as well.

There is a part of me worried about an all in one machine.....should I be or is my fear not warranted?

I purchased an Airport Extreme today and hooked it up but then realized the hard drives with Apple are all in one. I called and they told me I can bring it back and exchange it without a problem. So, do I want to?

Thanks,

Dawn

Are you asking if you should exchange what you have for a Time Capsule?

We have a TC and it works fine - we've been using it for years for backups. We don't use it as our router though, but I understand we could. We just happened to already have another one that we've continued to use.

Sorry, I meant.....I purchased an Airport Extreme yesterday after my router died. I thought I would get an external hard drive as well, but didn't realize until I called Apple that the external hard drive (Time Capsule) already offered a router built in.

I am asking if I should have a different/separate external drive for storage and a separate router, or if I should trade in the AE for the TC.

I think I am leaning towards doing it because it is so automatic. I am afraid any other external hard drive will just sit here and I will forget to back it up.

If you have Apple Care for a Mac you bought within the last 2 years, that plan also covers a TC. Between that and just makignit simple, we went with the TC for our home (a Mac and a MBP). -- Suzanne

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Time Capsule!
I would never remember to backup on my own - so simple with TC: Wireless and automatic!
(and it really came in handy when my laptop fell off my desk at school and killed my HD):thumbsup2
