Appetizers on the Deluxe Dining plan

Have a few questions. What constitutes appetizers on the Deluxe plan. I see alot of restaurants that have starters, sushi, first course and appetizers listed on the menus. CG has flatbreads then appetizers.

Does each restaurant work with you on the appetizers. Can I have a flatbread and my wife a cup of soup? Can a salad be an appetizer?

Yes, everything you have written can be an appetizer.

California Grill counts everything under flatbread, sushi, or first course as an appetizer, with the exception of the two most expensive sushi dishes which must be ordered as entrees.

Yes, each person on the DxDP is entitled to an appetizer, entree, dessert, and non-specialty/non-alcoholic drink at each mean (when using the credit). So you can order the flatbread and your wife can order the soup (and, at most places, you can share!).

The only places that seem the most fussy about what can and cannot be ordered are La Hacienda and Via Napoli. I've not been to La Hacienda, but at VN be sure to ask (if you aren't told by the server) what counts because they're pretty restrictive.

Tigger's Ally: we have eaten at Via Napoli several times on the deluxe dining plan. The only restriction we had on appetizer-ordering was that appetizer items on the menu that say "serves 2" must be ordered & shared by 2 people on the dining plan. Here's the list of Via Napoli appetizers from allears.net:

Fritto di Verdura - crisp fried vegetables, marinara piccante $7.00
Gamberetti Fagioli - jumbo shrimp, cannellini bean salad, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice $9.00
Eggplant Caponata - eggplant salad with olives, capers, pignoli nut, tomatoes, and raisins $7.00
Prosciutto e Melone - parma ham, cantelope $9.00
Salami e Provolone - dry cured sausage, imported provolone cheese $9.00
Mozzarella Caprese - vine-ripened tomato, fresh milk mozzarella $9.00

Antipasti
Arancini - fried risotto balls filled with mozzarella and meat ragu $10.00
Calamari Fritti - corn-crusted rings served with spicy tomato sauce $14.00
Tortellini in Brodo - meat tortellini in broth $8.00
Minestrone - vegetable & cannelini bean soup with basil pesto $8.00
Insalato del Contadino - cucumber, fennel, green beans, red wine vinaigrette $10.00
Fritto Misto - an assortment of just-fried seasonal vegetables, calamari & cheese. Serves 2 people. Arancini, mozzarella, calamari, melanzane, asparagi, zucchini, artichoke, pomodoro piccante sauce $26.00

As you can see almost all of the items are for one person to order. So usuing your example, you could order the salad (Insalato) and your wife could order the soup (Minestroni), no problem. Note the last item ( Fritto Misto) says "serves 2 people". If you ordered this, it would count as the appetizer credit for both of you so that would be the only appetizer the two of you could order with your dining plan credit.) By the way, this appetizer is HUGE. Hubby & I have ordered this one and have never come close to finishing it...it could easily serve 3 people.

Can my entre be a large pizza and my wifes entre be the house salad for 2? I would order a different appetizer if this was allowed.

No. Via Napoli follows the dining plan rules to the letter -you will not be allowed any creative usage here. Anyone on a dining plan is allowed to order any entree for one, only...if you choose pizza, that would be one of the individual-sized pizza. Should your wife choose to order the house salad for 2, that would count as the appetizer for both of you (meaning you could not order a different appetizer or different salad. the "for 2" means just that...credit-wise.) She would then also order an entree for one.

Anything on the menu which says "for 2" or "serves 2" must count as the component for both of you on the dining plan.

Not to hijack this but out of curiousity, I figured I'd ask. I'm on DxDp and going solo, so does that automatically eliminate the "for 2" apps for me or are they willing to make a smaller portion?

Can't hurt to ask, but expect the answer to be no at the non-Disney-owned restaurants (they tend to be more likely to follow exact menus/exact meal plans.)

The Disney-owned restaurants are more likely to be flexible. I do know when we have eaten at Mama Melrose, for example, they told hubby he could order the calamari-for-2 even though I'd already ordered the sliced tomato/cheese app.

I figured asking was the best way to go. It's not a huge deal to me either way, just more something to have in my back pocket when I'm there.
