OK, so I've been diagnosed w/an abcessed appendix. Now, I have to get a referral to a gastro-enterologist who will "evaluate" my appendix (based on my CAT scan results, or so I've been told). My Dr. seems to think that they'll determine if they need to take out the appendix or just leave it.

Am I wrong or wouldn't you want an abcessed appendix removed? Is this really something you can live with? When I hear abcessed appendix, all I can think of is this rotting, oozing organ in my body.

While I am in no pain now, I still am concerned that this is like a ticking time bomb ready to rupture at any given moment. I am curious to know if anyone here has dealt w/this? If so, what happened? If you'd prefer to PM me, that's groovy.

Thanks for any/all answers. ~Daxx's Wife

UPDATE -- Here's the latest. Called my primary physician for a reference for a Gastro-Ent. dr.. My primary was all "no- we're not messing around w/a Gastro-Ent. we're sending you to a surgeon", so he gave me a name of a surgeon, said make an appt. and told me that they'd call to get my CAT Scan results. So, I called for an appt. w/surgeon and could get in earliest Sept. 1. Called Dr. office to tell them appt. date and they said "that won't do" b/c primary read report and now he's calling surgeon to get a better date. Guess it's more of a big deal than my ob/gyn. felt it was.

Unfortunately, surgeon is on vaca. and they're having me see covering surgeon. However, covering surgeon's office is closed for the day but primary will contact them in the morning when they open. I will go for a consultation to see if I need surgery, but I can't imagine that they'd leave this rotting thing inside me.

I am ready to vomit over the fact that I have to have surgery. I thought I'd be relieved b/c the outcome could have been worse, but the thought of surgery has me so upset. I think I am more stressed out now than I was before.

Thing is ... I'm in no pain! The radiologist who read my Here's the latest. Called my primary physician for a reference for a Gastro-Ent. dr.. Thing is ... I'm in no pain! The radiologist who read my CAT scan, the primary and surgeon's receptionist asked how much pain I was in and all were shocked to hear that I was in no pain whatsoever!!!! Everyone's like "What? That is so bizarre!" OK, gee, thanks.

But, I am thinking it must be a big deal if primary is h*ll bent on getting me into a surgeon so fast.

And, that's all there is for now, Kids. I'll give you more details once I see the surgeon. Keep those fingers crossed for me. I am so apprehensive about impending surgery. I know I shouldn't think about it ... but that's like putting an elephant in the middle of the room and trying to ignore it.

Thanks for the stories and kind words ... they're greatly appreciated!

This happened to my husband in the first year we were married (17 years ago)! His had abcessed, sealed itself up and then he literally walked around for 2 - 3 weeks with stomach pain that would not go away. It had to come out - day after Thanksgiving and basically it was a hospital stay for 3 - 5 days. But nothing went simple with him and he was in for 2 weeks (tubes in nose, morphine, etc...) and then home for 3 weeks. His was such a mess - doctor said that it was the worse case he ever saw (something for the medical books!).

Just get it taken out - it really is not an organ that has much use anyway. Besides you don't want it to rupture and then have to go in for emergency surgery!

Hope it helps! PM me if you want to talk more. :sunny:

I agree, get it taken out. It is a very routine surgery, now done laprascopically. And the risks, I would think, of walking around with an absessed appendix outweigh the risks of the surgery. Plus, what if the stomach pain came back? You would probably have it removed eventually.

Of course, I am not a doctor, just stating my personal opinion. Good luck!

so if they decide it doesn't HAVE to be taken out, can you ask them to? I wouldn't want an abcessed organ staying in my body, it would scare me, I know that for sure. I would find out what my options are and what I could do if they don't reccomend getting it removed, maybe a 2nd opinion would be in order. Good luck!

I can't believe any doctor in his/her right mind would leave something like that alone.

But then maybe this is one of those things that sounds worse than it is? The reason I say that is because when you said you had an abscessed appendix I thought that they would have removed it immediately. Heck, it could take you a month to get into a gastro.

Believe me, I want this thing out. It sickens me to think that I'm walking around w/this infected, oozing, rotting so-called organ that has no intrinsic use inside me. If I could, I'd go right now and have it yanked out. I've been through enough and want this ordeal to come to an end.

I cannot believe that my Dr. just didn't recommend a surgeon. Now, I was thinking this was a gyn. issue (as it started w/ruptured ovarian cysts) so I've been dealing w/my gyn. He told me that I had to go through my primary dr. to get a referral to the Gastro-Ent. to be evaluated. I'm thinking "what?" When my Dr. said that I might be able to just "live w/it", I thought that I was going to vomit b/c the whole thing sounds so revolting!!!!

So, I am waiting for my primary to get me a referral for the Gastro-Ent. Who knows how long THIS will take ... and who knows how long I'll have to wait for an appt. w/the Gastro dude?! At this point, I'm ready to go to the ER, say that I had a CAT and it revealed an abcessed appendix and that I'm in loads of pain and need attention (even though I'm in no pain now). I am sick of the waiting game and feel like avoiding the other dr's and just hitting the ER. But, the ER is really for people who have emergencies and mine hasn't hit that level. However, if it does get so bad while I'm waiting for appts. that I can't stand it, I will go to the ER.

As I said, my biggest fear at this point is having it rupture while I'm waiting for referrals and evaluations. You'd think the Dr. would say "Holy cow -- an abcessed appendix - get this girl to the hospital, stat!" No such luck ... they're too busy dragging their flipping feet. I swear, if this sucker ruptures, I'm going to be in a mood to file a lawsuit for malpractice b/c of the foot dragging on referrals, etc..

I mean, honestly, the radiologist has diagnosed abcessed appendix. I'm a walking time bomb. Why aren't they doing more for me?!?! Oh yeah -- they want the insurance money, so they'll drag me around for more dr. visits, tests, etc. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!! This has been going on since July 4th!!!! I finally got an answer on August 17th. How sick is that?!

I have this sick feeling that this whole thing will end up w/a trip to the ER and emergency surgery.

:wizard: Sending you some prayers and loads of PD. One of my SIL's had a ruptured appendix that sealed itself for several months---she had it removed safely. NC Beast had some complications when his burst in 2003, but he was out of the hospital after 5 days (3.5 days in SICU).

Please stay pro-active in getting this taken off ASAP.

It sounds crazy to me to wait around like that, but they may very well be doing it because your insurance requires it. If they don't follow their rules, they won't pay and you'd get hung for the bill.

My guess is that if you told them you would prefer to have the surgery and will pay the bill regardless of insurance problems, they'd change their tune in a hurry.

It's terrible what hoops you have to jump through for insurance companies, even to the point of taking serious health risks.

Just don't go to Kenmore Mercy's Emergency room. I was visiting there once and my son had an asthma attack. This place was pathetic.
I have a friend that lives in a town near you and had gall bladder problems. She was in her mid thirties and the Dr's wanted to take a wait and see attitude because it was not flaring when she went to see them.
Needless to say, she ended up in MFillmore Suburban in the middle of the night with gall stones. They again took a wait and see attitude and sent her home. She has problems every so often an is pretty upset the Drs give her the waiting game. :guilty:

My appendix ruptured in Aug. of 2000. I spent 5 days in the hospital, it wasn't fun. They are really nothing to fool around with, very painful.

HUGS to you

Am I wrong or wouldn't you want an abcessed appendix removed?
No, I wouldn't. And it is not safe to have you walking around with it that way either from what I understand. I would be saying things like "Well, if it bursts and infectious material is spread into my abdomen, are you going to take responsibility for that?"

Check out my OP as there's an update. At least we're moving on this. But, who knows when this covering dr. will take me. Hopefully tomorrow or Friday! Wouldn't it be great if I could have surgery next week, which would give me some recovery time before school started?! Not holding my breath, though. I'm just glad that my primary has this "nip it in the bud" take on things.
