first time using AP's. Linked the certificate to my MDE. Do i have to go to GR to redeem it or is it done at check-in. If i have to redeem them at GR do i have to do it before i check in at the resort. does one have to do with the other. TIA

You must go to any ticket booth or Guest Relations to get your AP activated
before you can use the AP to enter a Disney park.

Your AP has nothing to do with checking into your resort (unless you have an AP discounted room.)
And, even then, you don't have to have an activated AP in order to check in.

Yes, you must go to Guest Relations or a ticket counter to activate your pass and get your AP card. I find it easiest to just stop at the ticket counter on my way into the park. Make sure everybody has their ID.

To my knowledge you do not need to do it before you check in.

FYI - I've never had to show my AP when checking in with a room booked with an AP discount. Not even the first time, when I booked before having an AP

the AP certificate that the OP has will work for check in. So if you want to check in first you can just show them the AP certificate and ID

Two things.
1. We don't know if the OP has an AP room rate. So the point may be moot.

2. An AP voucher is "technically" not the same as having an active AP.
So, if (IF) the resort check-in WANTED to "see" an AP, the non-activated AP voucher in MDE would not be the same thing as an AP (as a guest could simply buy a Voucher in X year and keep holding onto it for paying AP rates in "perpetuity.")

But, in reality, in most cases the resort check-in would not need to see the AP, in the first place.

In the past, if an AP was (in fact) requested, the guest had 24+ hours to bring it by the front desk.
