I've never had an AP so I don't know anything about them. I have read on the board that you can receive discounts on things if you are an AP holder. But what if I purchas AP and haven't validated them, could I still get a discount on perhaps my room rate?

The short answer is yes, you can book a room under the AP discount code even before you puchase an AP. You just need one when you check-in. I think for other food and merchandise discounts, you need an active pass.

How does the AP become activated? Is it activated the first day of use? Or is it activated when you use it for a discount on your room or merchandise purchase? How does the CM know whether or not it's activated?

If you order your AP in advance or from the Disney store you receive a voucher .If you buy at the parks you get the real AP not a voucher. The voucher must be redeemed at the park guest services window at one of the 4 main parks.MK,AK,MGM or Epcot.Hope this helps.
