Day 9 - Friday 1st October
Plans for today: Islands of Adventure in the morning, for Hulk and Popeye, lunch at Checkers, then Magic Kingdom around 4pm, with a PS at Liberty Tree Tavern at 6pm before heading to Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party at 7pm.
We woke up about 8ish, both feeling hungry so we headed to Dennys for a treat. Andy had his corned beef hash platter and I had the American slam which was scrambled egg with cheese, bacon, sausage, hash browns and toast. It was very nice. With full bellys, we headed to Universal. There were a few more cars here this morning so we thought it would more busy, but well come to that in a moment.
We parked in the same area as the other day - King Kong 110 - and then took the long long walk to get to the entrance. It takes a good 10-15 minutes to walk to the entrance, including walking through Citywalk. I think a lot of people must have headed straight for Universal Studios as its got the new Mummy ride. There were a few people queuing to get in but not as many as we thought.
Once through the gates, we head for Hulk. I leave Andy to have a couple of goes on Hulk and I head straight for Toon Lagoon and my favourite ride on Earth.
Amazingly, it reads 0 minutes and there is no queue. I join a barge which already has 6 people in it. The worker (who we nicknamed Fez) recognises me from the other day and says back for more eh? Oh yes! So off we go and I get thoroughly soaked as per usual. We get back to port and we all want to go round again, except for a Chinese couple that squealed their way round the whole ride and cant wait to get off. By the time we come back round from another soaking, Andys waiting there for me so he jumps on while everyone else jumps off. Another 4 get on and were off. We all get very wet and have a lot of fun and opt to go round again. Another couple get on and theyve not been on this before, so this will be fun. This is my 4th go and I swear its my last. But of course, its not. The couple surprise us and have a lot of fun. 4 of our party get off at the next stop and Andys itching to go again so we pick up a few more passengers and head off for my 5th go. As there are more of us on this time around, the barge spins more and we all get a lot wetter. I love this ride so much, its just so much fun. But after 5 goes, Ive had enough and Im starting to spin myself. We get off and I buy a Popeye t-shirt. I wait before putting my socks and trainers back on while Andy goes to investigate Dudley Do-Right. Unfortunately, its closed down but it might reopen at some point.
We sit down for a quick break then head back round Toon Lagoon. Andy goes to have another look at Dudley Do-Right while I take a slow walk through some shops. The ride is up and running but the water part isnt running and it could be another half hour or so. We head back through the park and its definitely getting a lot busier now and were fighting our way through crowds. I guess most people dont turn up until Midday or so then. Andy had another go on Hulk while I looked round some of the stalls. I found a really nice Universal Halloween Horror Nights shot glass. Andy wasnt long on Hulk - it was a walk on despite showing a 10 minute wait. Rather than ride a 2nd time, Andy came back to meet me. Even on a quiet day, the Universal staff were refusing people the chance to go on a 2nd time straight off, they were insisting that they walk round again. Seems a bit daft but there you go.
On the way out, we stopped at the Port of Entry Christmas Shop. They had some nice things. Walking further along the shop, we came into a part that sold sweets. Wow, they had some nice stuff! The tubes of Jelly Belly jellybeans caught Andys eye - jellybeans are his favourite so he decided to have some. The big was filling up more and more and it looked absolutely huge. I had to state the obvious (as wives do) and say that the huge bag would come to a lot more than the $2.20 per quarter! He said he didnt care and carried on filling it up. It was almost full by the time he took it to the cash desk and I waited for the cost $17.34 including tax. What? $17.34 for a huge bag of jellybeans? Once I picked myself up off the floor, we paid for them and Andy left with a huge beam on his face. And for your information only, here is a photo of what a $17.34 bag of Jelly Belly beans looks like.
Also, I would like to add that only half of this bag remains.
We made our way back to the car park and were soon on our way. It was just coming up to midday and Andy was getting peckish. We hadnt paid Checkers a visit yet, despite it being our favourite junk food place. Their chili cheese fries are the best weve had anywhere. I had a double mushroom swiss burger and Andy had a chili cheese dog and we shared the fries. With 2 humungous 2 diet cokes (in a Gators cup) it came to $10. The food was yummy as always.
It was then time to head back to the resort for an afternoon rest. We had a big night ahead of us and we were really looking forward to the Halloween Party. We slept for a good few hours, before showering and getting dressed in our costumes. Andys t-shirt was great with the logo Put the Candy in the bag and nobody gets hurt on it. My top was bright orange with Love At First Bite on it with matching pants from Old Navy. Im pleased to report that I only saw one other woman wearing the same pants as me that night!
We waited a good 15 minutes for our bus, then 2 for the Magic Kingdom turned up together - it was like being back in London!! We got chatting with a few other people at the bus stop. One lady was in a queen costume shed put together with bits from Walmart and then you had two women that worked for the Disney Store itself (I cant remember where though). One was dressed as Sleeping Beauty, the other as Maleficent. The funny thing was that they worked in the same store yet they had no idea that they were going to the party on the same date and staying at the same resort - and they bumped into each other in the lobby. It really is a small world huh?
We arrived at Magic Kingdom about 5pm. We had to pick up our tickets from will call and lucky for us the queue was quite small. People were actually buying tickets for the party there and then. We had no problem picking up our tickets. The party wasnt due to start until 7pm but we had a PS for the Liberty Tree Tavern for 6pm. We entered the park using our party tickets and were given wristbands, together with bags for trick or treating. I already had my white Mickey treat bag but I took a plastic one anyway.
We headed for Tomorrowland and rode the TTA and then Buzz Lightyear. By this time it was 5.30 and we didnt know how far the Liberty Tree was, or where it actually was in Liberty Square, so we off we went. We found it easily enough and were about 15 minutes early for our PS. We checked in anyway and waited until about 6.10 to get seated. It was packed out and apparently it was completely full that night. All the staff had painted spooky faces and they looked really great. We were seated and our server soon came along. We ordered our drinks and were then told what to expect food wise.
First they brought out salad with strawberry vinegarette and warm soft rolls with fresh butter. The salad was divine and the vinegarette was really tasty. Next we were bought out a huge plate full of roast turkey, flank steak, pork fillet and cornbread stuffing, a bowl of carrots in garlic butter, the creamiest mash potato that Ive ever tasted, mac and cheese and turkey gravy. The turkey gravy was lovely but it was more like a soup. The food was really tasty. Andy found it was an odd combination having mac and cheese with a roast dinner but I thought it went quite well. We had a little more flank steak and roast turkey and literally stuffed ourselves.
During dinner, we had some visits from some wonderful friends:
We forgot about dessert and once our table was cleared, our server brought over a dish of apple cobbler and ice cream. Well, it wouldve been rude not to try it wouldnt it? It was very nice but we couldnt manage very much of it. We would both highly recommend dinner at the Liberty Tree Tavern, it was value for money and very tasty.
Wed finished by 7.15 so we decided it was time to enjoy the Halloween Party. As we were leaving, a woman asked Andy if his name was Peter. Andy replied that it was his middle name but his first name was Andy. She then asked if his wife was called Annabel so I spun round. It was here I had my very first Disney board meet! It was really lovely bumping into Lynette from the Passporter boards. We had a lovely chat and had our photo taken together.
It was great bumping into someone who you think you know as youve read their postings etc. After more chatting, we parted ways and Lynette left with her party to enjoy the Halloween Party. We never bumped into each other again so I hope she had a great time.
coming up in part 2: some rides and the Parade!
