Time to get our DS room more to the liking of a soon to be 16 year old on a desgn on a dime budget...$500 . Looks like he wants a Paintball theme, overall. The room is not all that large, so we are trying to be effective with storage and like the platform beds ( he has a double)with the drawers, but wondering just how sturdy they are, he's not a huge kid, but not exactly "gentle"...I realize wewill have to go with floating type nightstands,as the drawers would open up into where the nightstands would traditonally go...actually, main funriture items would be the bed and a desk...averything else is open to how he works, we are not tradtional in furnishings...so not too worried...just want something that won't break immediately or be frustrating.

I had one as a teen. It was all wood and very sturdy. I'm sure you can find crappy ones or solid ones depending on what you spend. It was a daybed style with a shelving unit along the length too so I didn't need a nightstand.

ETA: I LOVED it!
Realizing this isn't helpful without a current manufacturer...

My 10 year old has a bed like this. He's had it since the age of 4. His has a book shelf at the head of the bed. It is SOLID...oak I believe. That bed isn't going anywhere! LOL Various adults in my family have also slept in it when they've stayed overnight, and everyone said it was comfortable.

ETA: we got it at Raymour and Flanigan. I can't remember the brand name.

My ds has a bed like that. We had it made at a wood furniture place. He has the bookshelh headboard and then drawers and a cabinet underneath. I actually ordered 3 rows of drawers and they made 2 rows and a cabinet instead but I just kept it anyway. I can't remember how much it was, I'll ask my husband.

I got a bed with storage drawers underneath from Ikea for my DD a few years back. It's very sturdy and well-made and is a white laminate, not sure of the model name. I put it together myself.

agnes!

Both dd11 & ds15 (and he is over 6', 200 lbs) have these types of beds - very sturdy with the 2 pull-out drawers underneath and a shelf built into the headboard and the footboard - lots of storage space. The only "bad" thing is the drawers collect a lot of dust! Dd & I just cleaned out her room and we had to take everything out of both drawers to vacuum! I would still buy them again tho since they create so much storage space.

Thanks everyone, appears they are popular and practicle...DS wants black, and I am not opposed to painting whatever we find, but did not want to pursue as an option if reviews were all negative. One thing I did ntice, are the drawersa smidge higher than the actual base, to allow for carpet and sliding? Without hardwre, I am guessing the lip type bottoms...are they easy enough to pull out , and are the drawers on catches?

My boys both have identical bedroom sets with beds with drawers underneath. It does help a lot with storage. We usually store out of season clothes in the drawers under the beds. The units they have are solid oak and are very sturdy. It's nice that we just need a mattress on the platform - no box springs or bed rails.

My dd who is a freshman in college has the rubbermaid storage under the bed thing. Most of the college kids have them.

Just another option to throw out there.

Ds is about same age and has the bed with the three storage drawers underneath. He has had this bed for years. It has held up very good, bought it I think, at one of those furniture places, ....

So, the drawers are not huge, hey are basically located close to the floor. They are not enough for my ds clothing, jeans are hung up on those over the closet metal things and ALL his shirts are hung up in the closet...he has dozens an dozens of shirts....He has a full dresser that has socks/undies/pjs and then a draw with "older" t's he will not get rid of :lmao: yet.

SO, personally if this bed thing will be his ONLY source for keeping clothes, I say skip it....it fits "kiddie" size better (bed is twin) We use it strictly for seasonal storage...you know the "winter T's" :rotfl2:
BY the way that paintball theme is too funny, the ds is going this weekend...and $$$ ouch, thats costly.....but its better than the lovely Bright speckled paint on my trees and cedar shed, and decking :lmao::lmao:
Kids....ya gotta love em..;)

My son had a crate style twin bed with a drawer underneath. The drawer was not very big and didn't last long.

DS has 2 small 3 drawer dressers, we were thinking of puting those in his closet vertically, but we are hoping for good use of the drawers for jeans, sweats and shorts. I wonder if being a full size the drawers will be a bit deeper?
Minimal is best for DS...and since all his clothes end up on the floor, I guess I was secretely hoping of the drawes/storage was as close to the floor as possible, maybe , just maybe he might actually put clothing in there. We are not allowed to have paintball or airsoft guns outside in the yard, DS BEGS us move to anywhere that does allow it...yeah, the place he likes runs pretty steep for all day play..mostly for the cost of paint...but yeah, paintball is his thing and to be honest he is pretty darn good at it. I could do without some of the wash I get, that paint sure does have a *distinctive* odor, lol...so if we can work a room out to reflect how much he likes it, it will be fun
