I've been thinking about getting a part time job for a while now. There is a new Kohls opening near my house. They are advertising for part time and have evening positions doing ad set/pricing. Anyone have any experience working for kohl's ???

I did, I did, I did,.
Ad Set up, is done from 10:00 p.m. till 6:00 a.m. You can work anywhere from 1 day to 7 days a week if you want.

My opinion? Kohl's is absolutely nuts with changing their prices.

You get a hand held palm pilot. You receive all the ad's for your depart. I used to start in households. It would take me almost 4 -5 hours to get this department done. Your palm pilot goes down at 2:00 a.m. and that is your lunch hour. There were a lot of nites, that you didn't get done at 6:00 a.m., we would work till at least 7:30-8:30 a.m. Like I said, Kohl's likes to change ads from 20% off to 25% off, back to 20% off, to 40% off, all within the same week. Each sign has to be changed everytime.

Kohl's gives employees 15% on most things, except households is 10%. I usually go back Oct.-Jan. My first year I was almost working 40 hours week, on top of my full time job. Now I just go in either a Friday nite and a Tuesday nite. I can only handle one nite a week without sleep.

Anything else?

I work part-time for Kohl's and love it. Ad Set in my store is not from 10pm to 6:30am. It's more along the lines of 8pm to 1:30am or until all the signs get changed. There are other part-time evening positions with Kohl's if you can begin working earlier in the evening. Those positions are POS or at the register, Customer Service, Recovery which is working a department. You did not mention if you have a full time day job but many people I work with have day jobs and work part-time at Kohl's during the evenings. The store is open until 10pm each night and 9pm on Sundays. When we have special sales and around the holidays they will stay open until 11pm and midnight. Most workers will have to work an additional 1/2 hr after the store closes so even those who cannot begin working until 6:30pm can get a 4 hr shift in.

If you have any additional questions about working part-time at Kohl's, let me know.

I worked seasonal at Kohl's a couple years ago and loved it! I am thinking of re-applying either there or The Disney Store when I get back in August. The only thing with Kohl's was since I also work FT, I asked for only 10 hours a week. I had to stay on them or they had me up to 20.

Wannabee, are you talking about the new Kohl's in Baton Rouge? I've been watching the progress on that one on my daily commute.

Looking forward to the good deals others have reported. Not looking forward to the inevitable crowds!

Could anyone give me an idea of what Kohl's starting pay is for either stocking or cashier? Thanks!

I wanted to look into working 1-2 nights a week. I haven't discussed it with DH yet, but was looking into places to work while DH took over watching the kids and putting them into bed. This would mainly be to help out with vacations and Christmas shopping. Kohl's is fairly close to us.

Any other places to consider?

what is the pay/hour? I am interested in working evenings-either the overnight hours or I really liked the hours of 8pm - 1:30. What is the average pay of something like that. We have a local Costco and I know they pay well...have thought about them, but not sure about the hours. My Dchildren get out of school at 3pm and since they go to a catholic school-no bussing! I could leave them alone if I needed to start work before my DH came home, my oldest is 12, the next is 11, then a 5 yr old. DH gets home at 4:30............I would prefer the later hours though to be around for games/practices..........I currently watch 2 children in my home, but am not sure if I want to keep doing that once all three of mine are in school full time(kindergarden is full time days for us)...

I do ad set & stock at our local Kohl's. The pay is crappy and the hours are erratic.
If you work the 10pm-6/6:30am shift you get 75c extra per hour. The base wage around here is barely over minimum wage.
Some weeks I get 6 nights, some weeks they only give me 1. It just depends on the number if trucks & ad sets.
That being said I love doing ad set. It is bizarre that they are constanly changing signs and often the price barely (if at all) changes. I have done mark downs a few times and that wasn't bad.
The discount isn't that great but when they have employee shop days the discount is pretty decent. Plus you often get first dibs on clearance

Costco does pay good.. I believe everyone gets $10 to start and you get another $1 after 90 days. People tends to start working there in HS and never leave.

The close at 8:30 Monday -Friday and emplyees tend to get out between 9:30-10:00

Also sunday is time and a half. The do shuffle you around. Especially when you start out.. the guys as well as girls will be out pushing carts.

You have to watch stores if you are looking for overnights. Most you are "locked in" and cannot leave until 6 am till the next crew comes in.
I have been a vendor at costco for 3 years.. I would be making more if I was an employee.. With 4 kids I cant be as flexible as needed.

I would think that Kohl's has different starting part-time salaries depending on where the store is located in the US and the cost of living in that particular area. The Kohl's in my area starts most workers at $7.00/hour. After 90 days, you get a 50 cent raise. I live in SE PA which is considered a high cost of living area so Kohl's wages are way low for retail in this area. I believe Walmart begins workers at $7.50- $8.00/hour in my area as does most retail in my local mall. I cannot verify, but I hear Home Depot and Sam's Club begin part-time workers at $10/hour to fetch shopping carts. So---if you goal is to make as much money as you can working part-time, Kohl's would not be the answer as I am sure you can find other retail or part-time jobs paying more. But---sure I am working for some extra money but there was more to my decision to work for Kohl's and to ultimately stay with Kohl's. I have always loved shopping at Kohl's so the additional 10-15% off is great. When they give an extra 15% off for employee shopping days or when you have a Pick a Day coupon for 15% and then get your 10-15% on top of that, you end up getting 23-27% off items (if my math is correct). My Kohl's is great with working with your availability, within reason. The store is 5 minutes from my home which is another plus. I like the people who work there and I like the people who shop there.

As the previous poster said, there is a shift differential for adset workers who work past a certain hour but in my store our adset workers don't work into the wee hours of the morning.

Thanks for all the input. I have a fulltime job but would like to bring in a little extra money... not more than 3 nights a week... Have worked for Target in the past but that was full time as a team leader and don't think I would be happy returning as just a team member.

Kohl's is interviewing this weekend for the new store in Lafayette so I went online and have an interview scheduled. Guess I'll find out more about pay then.

Does anyone have any thoughts on higher paying part time jobs? Don't want anything too stressful as I have enough of that at my fulltime job.

Thanks

Newt, any chance you are near Lancaster? Also, do you ever see people hired for mid-day, as in, while the kids are in school? DH works late many nites and every Sat and Sun so my options are limited.

Lisa, yes, I am in Chester County. What I like so much about Kohl's is that they seem to work with one's availability. If you would apply and state on your application or in your interview that you are interested in working for them and are available Monday through Friday 9am - 2pm and are then hired by them, you would only ever be scheduled between the hours of 9am - 2pm. The scheduling is computerized, with some human intervention, so the computer couldn't schedule you outside of those hours. Granted, I would think they look more favorably upon someone with more available hours to offer because it makes their scheduling more flexible. Not that they would schedule someone to work all their available hours - it just gives them more flexibility with scheduling. Since many of the late afternoon until close workers are highschool or college students or workers with full time jobs, I would think they have a need for good day time part-time workers.

We have one woman who drives a school bus during the school year. She has her morning run and then her afternoon run with her school bus but works at Kohl's between those 2 runs.

You have nothing to lose by filling out an application and interviewing.

Have you looked into merchandishing? You can search for jobs at narms.com and Volition.com

I used to do the picture frames at kohls, makeup at supermarkets and a few other jobs. All paid $10 an hour.

Everyone I know who worked at Kohls hated it. They're pretty lousily managed, they engage in some (IMO) iffy tactics, and then there's the credit card push.
But if you're willing to be slapped in the face (literally) when you ask a customer to open a charge because your job depends on it, go ahead.
