Anyone with a Creative Zen mp3 player?

My dd's mp3 player isn't working and I was honestly hoping someone here would say, "Duh, just do ___________(easy thing) and it will work again." She's e-mailed customer support and none of their suggestions worked. The screen is black. Yesterday it would alternate between freezing on the "recovery" (I think that's what it's called) screen and the screen that says "Zen." I don't think it's still under warranty and I don't want to pay too many $$$ to have it fixed, since it's proving to be sub-standard product.

OK, I just pushed the reset button and it's freezing on the screen that says "ZEN" again.

Also, I now know not to get a Zen for my ds. I was thinking of getting him a Zune, but am now leaning more towards an iPod. Any advice?

First off what kind of Zen is it? I have had two Zens, a Zen Nomad Jukebox and the Zen Vision W.

What you are describing sounds like something that happened to my Nomad. If your Zen has a harddrive in it the needle that reads the data might be stuck. All I had to do was a little "percussive therapy". Basically as it was starting up or resetting I would give it a couple good thumps on the side to unstick the needle. Worked like a charm.

Personally I like the Zens better than the Zune or iPod. The support more file formats and for mine...they were cheaper.

I have a Zen Micro and that has happened to mine a couple of times. All I did was remove the battery for a few seconds and then put it back in. Then start it back up, and it worked again.

Let me first say that I know absolutely NOTHING about technology But I'll throw this out there anyway...

I have the Zen Vision M, and I have less than 9 MB of free space in it. I've noticed that it takes a lot longer to start up now than it did when I had more free space. So I'm wondering if your daughter has very little free space left; could that cause it to freeze up (I'm asking anyone that might know)?

Mine has only frozen up 2x on me, and the old paper-clip-in-the-reset-hole trick worked fine.
