Anyone watching the SATC reboot? Major spoiler inside...

wow. I wonder if they were expecting backlash and shot that before the episode aired or if they threw it together after the backlash?

I don't think this reboot is doing well if you go by the fans outrage.
Honestly I think it was planned and shot before.

I have given it some thought, I guess this whole Big thing (as much as it just kills me to see) fits. In the original show, they were all pretty much "bullet proof". I am not as old as they are in the show, but in my time I have seen and experienced loss. I guess there is a some bit of empathy there. The one with Miranda's mother hit hard, but Big just knocked me off my feet. I guess this is part of life and as you get older, you will see more of this if you are the survivor. That said, I really am heart-broken.

Death/loss like that may be part of life, but it wasn't part of this show's genre, which is serio-comedy or dramedy.

Shows like Grey's Anatomy, which is a straight drama, is infamous for killing off main cast members in horrifically dramatic ways, especially during it's season finale. I remember when the character Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan,) died in a similar, quiet and unexpected way. Many of us were knocked off our feet for quite a while. I sobbed through the whole finale and was quite affected for quite a while. So I get how others were floored and affected after Big died.

I saw an interview recently with one of the husbands of Desperate Housewives. He said the husbands on the show were always on pins and needles, wondering IF or WHEN they might get killed off the show. Again, it was usual and expected, in an unexpected sort of way with that show.

But, not for SATC. Even the one other death that a PP posted about, her death, falling out the window was done in a serio-comedic way. And the show won't even write that Stanford Blatch died, even though actor Willie Garson died in real life, because as they said, it's not "charming." That shows they want to stick to the light, upbeat serio-comedic tone this show is supposed to have.

I really hate what they did with Steve. He's a shell of his former self. I have a feeling this will be a hate-watch, just La Brea is for me. I keep watching to see a character get gored by a mastadon.

Steve was always a wimp. He couldn't handle that Miranda was stronger and more powerful than him. Even him having an affair was him being an emotional weakling.

Probably the weirdest part of this reboot was the whole awkward conversation about, ahem, "playing with oneself." Like, was this not addressed ad nauseam in the original series? Didn't these women talk about this and their use of "toys" openly, like ALL the time? Why did Carrie act like she had never heard of such a thing. And how did she not KNOW if Big had ever done it. Like, what?
When in fact I remember a few episodes where Big would call her and do that very thing over the phone.

Remember, there's a whole character missing from the new show now. Samantha used to be the one who would take over the sex conversations and brag about using 5 toys at once and having a whole warehouse in reserve. Then the other girls would give each other the look, "Oh here she goes again."

Now, without Samantha, it sounds like the writers and actresses are bit at a loss as to how to approach the sex conversations that are so intrinsic to the show.

I think they are making Miranda into someone with a drinking problem with all the alcohol she was sneaking. Also feeling like they are setting her up to be bisexual. It felt like they were hinting at something with Che.
Yep. It would directly mirror her personal life. She left her marriage to a man because she fell in love with a woman. Pretty lazy on the part of the writers if they just steal directly from her real life.

Or Cynthia Nixon demanded that it be written into the show for her character, or she's not coming back. The show was already down one character with Samantha gone. They couldn't have done the show with Miranda gone too. Cynthia Nixon had all the leverage.

Probably so. It's still just so lazy to basically play yourself but actors do it all the time.

And there is the problem. The whole series was about these ladies finding their other halves. Dating, flirting, sex, prowling for men, etc. Now that three of them are happily married and no Samantha...............well I guess that's why Big had to go.

I just wish they didn't bring him back just to kill him off. I wish they started the series with him already dead. Like I said in a previous post, have it mentioned that Big died five years ago. Then we wouldn't be in the trenches with Carrie in that dark and suffocating fresh grief stage. I think the audience would have taken it better if he had been gone for a while. I just don't know how they will get over the somber feeling. They still could have showed their special relationship through flashbacks and memories.

Everything I have been reading by the fans has been negative. I hope it gets better.

I avoided hearing what exactly the Big spoiler was, but I knew there was one. I didn't expect death, until he hopped off the peloton and grabbed his arm.

I was always on Team Big. Even though I knew Aiden was the "good guy" there was no magical rapport like the one Carrie and Big had. The spark with Big and Carrie was so fun to watch. And even though I am sad and stunned, I do think their storyline was getting stale. We had been through the break ups, the heartache, and the good times. Good times are wonderful, but they don't pack that OMG moment we all look for when watching. This was an OMG moment. On some level I get why they killed him, even though I truly loved Big. :sad1: (he had some of the BEST lines)

WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO MIRANDA?!?!
I do not like the Miranda stumbling privileged white woman story line. Miranda is smarter than this writing. Sure everyone can put their foot in their mouth, but this is repeated over and over and over. Come on, Miranda would know to shut up and move on.
Steve having hearing loss. It is simple! Geez, get the man better hearing aids. Come on! :rolleyes2 As stated by PP earlier, he was always a wimp ... but you cheered for him because he is a good guy. He has grown more common sense since season 2, give him credit.
And YES! WTH is up with Brady?! 17 and a girlfriend is living in their house? Making out at a piano recital? Banging against his parents wall while knockin' the boots? Smoking weed at a funeral? Yeah, I cannot see where Miranda would have ever let this kid become this much of a brat.
What are they doing to this character and her family?! Turning them into idiots? I do not like it!
(and yes, I do think they are going to write in a alcoholism story line)
I watched the two episodes that are out and I enjoyed it. Sounds like maybe I’m alone in that 🤷‍♀️

You are not alone. Even though I was miffed at the Miranda story line, I was still riveted. Death is a real part of life, and I am interested to see where they are going to go with this. Sure it will have dark moments, but I think they can also have the comedy too. Stanford's line of the neighbor wearing the designer white hoodie is prime example.

The one thing I could react to was the way Carrie was stoically going through the motions when having to deal with planning the funeral and other people who should have been helping instead falling apart. That's what happened when my father died in 2020. Sometimes I feel I'm just now processing my grief when little things remind me of him or something happens that I wish he could witness.

I think they did an excellent job with that. That is how many people process such a sudden death. Absolutely robotic going through the motions, your mind is unable to process the enormity of the loss. And with that, @tcufrog I am sorry you lost your Dad.

With all that said, I like this better than the 2 movies. I know, mostly everyone loved the first movie. I saw it opening day at the theater and wasn't wowed. Just didn't do it for me. This feels more like the series, even though I know many of you will disagree. I will continue to watch, even with the dumbed down Miranda. (although I did love her line at the recital. "I had a rough first day at school, and I'm looking at 2 hours of tween Mozart" Yep, let the woman have her purse wine!)

Kristin Davis & SJP are clapping back at haters and viewers on social media cruelly criticizing their looks and how they've aged in 11+ years. Men don't get this kind of scrutiny and criticism. :sad2:

https://news.yahoo.com/kristin-davis-angry-constant-social-181035006.html

I think Kristin and SJP need to step away from their devices. It's time they and people in general stop paying attention to the few on social media and some forums who are LOUD and tear others down, but don't contribute positively or add value to other people's lives. These people are often pathetic and actually weak on other ways. They've been handed a media where they can be LOUD, but that should be IT. Many of these haters are people who've never accomplished anything of value in their lives. Many haters are sitting on a couple cases of stockpiled toilet paper as a chair, and posting from their parent's basement. Some are just nasty Internet Karens who will never look as good as Kristin and SJP on their worst bad hair day. They are trying to schadenfreude Kristin & SJP for their looks 11 years after their last movie. Meanwhile, no one gets to see what these people look like and how they've aged.

I saw a clip of something Ben Affleck said today. I think it was on Howard Stern. Ben was talking about the pressure and criticism and hatred toward him and J.Lo being together the first time. How that pressure and scrutiny & cruelty got to him and in part helped break them up back then. He said it took a long time to realize those are people he would NEVER have over for dinner. They are just people filled with hate and cruelty. I hope Kristin & SJP remember that. While I don't agree with killing Big off, I respect that they are trying to create entertainment for us.

I can't imagine the idea of having a television show, subsequent movies and a reboot chronicle my own aging process. It would be too much for me to watch. SJP is gettin criticized because she hasn't had plastic surgery and Kristin is getting criticized because she has. You can't win.

I hated: The focus on SJP's shoes as she ran to big in the shower. Was I supposed to care that she sacrificed an expensive pair of shoes as her husband was dying?

I liked: That there is an acknowledgment of the complexity of adult friendships. The idea that Carrie doesn't call Charlotte because she doesn't want to deal with two people's emotions is pretty darn accurate. We all have people in our lives who we know not to go to for certain things because it won't bring the support we need.

I was annoyed by: Charlotte's apparent inability to speak clearly. There was a slight mumble to her lines. I don't know if it's because of lip filler or a medical condition, but it sounded like she had invisilign or something slightly affecting her speech. I like that the characters aged. I just didn't like her speech pattern being affected. [I'm a trial lawyer and worked with my orthodontist to not wear my Invisalign for the 6-7 hrs per day when I was in front of a jury because it affected my speech.]

As for everything that you've stated, abso-effing-lutely.

I caught that, as well. It's subtle but definitely there.

I think Charlottes speech was due to lip fillers. It was almost like they were numb. Not sure if she just had them done before filming. Regardless, I thought she looked fabulous. SJP looked amazing too, she hardly looks like she aged. I was stunned at how young she looked. Cynthia Nixon went more natural and does not look like she had work done. Still, I thought she looked great too, and really fit with her character who would NOT be into any sort of youth-enhancing procedures.

I hated: The focus on SJP's shoes as she ran to big in the shower. Was I supposed to care that she sacrificed an expensive pair of shoes as her husband was dying?

The shoes were the ones that Big put on her foot when he asked her to marry him the second time because he didn't have a ring. They were "the shoes" :guilty:

Did anyone notice that the bar Miranda popped into on the way to school was called Smith's? I expected him to be the owner.
