Anyone Rent DVC Points for thier Trips, how did you find the experience?

We rented points for our just completed stay. We stayed Sunday night through Friday night. We rented 60 points for $10/point. Although Friday night was more expensive, I didn't really look at it that way. I looked more at the average cost per night. At an average of $100/night it was still cheaper then a moderate, but more then a value. I thought it was a good price for the room we had. Our OKW studio was very spacious.

Also I believe if you are going to fly you will need to have the Magical Express arranged through the member you rent from.

Hi All -

Thanks for the thread - there are things I wonder but never want to "bother" owners over on the DVC boards - and there are sure strict guidelines for posting! (Understandable of course, it's business transactions!)

This is my question - we have eight nights planned in January at WL- Friday-Sat AM. If I wanted to rent villa points (VWL) for a 1 BR, would I buy Mon-Friday points, then move to the villa after 3 nights at WL booked thru Disney? And then of course, we move ourselves, yes?

Guess I'm still trying to save some money and also try out the villas - because I am finally getting to the point where I ought to look into a resale!

And I can or cannot buy the DDP if I rent points from an owner? I ask the owner and pay at check in, yes?

The air is already booked and paid for - Disney just has a deposit.

Thank you, thank you!!
It might be hard to get the VWL in January depending on when you want to go. VWL is the smalled DVC. You won't be renting points, you'll be renting a reservation.

The days of your travel might require several moves - Fri & Sat nights at WL, Sun-Thur nights at VWL, Fri night at WL. Like Sammie said, Fri and Sat nights are the highest value nights.

More members are requesting $12-15 a point these days. Fewer are asking $10 or less.

We always rent points for Sun night thru Thurs Night and bookend around it with cash nites in resorts. This year we are staying two nites before and three after at the Swan using my wife's nurse discount rate. You would save by paying cash for a Fri or Sat nite in a villa. We have paid $10-11 a point for rentals. When we posted our requests on the rental board for our trip next June, we got five contacts to rent us points in the $11 to $14 range. You can go to the register of deeds website for the county the villa is located in to check ownership records and do a search on these boards to see if the prospective renter has any negative posts. I would also ask for references from former rentees.
:thumbsup2

We are staying on rented points in April so we can tour SSR. It is a good way to get the DVC feel of things and get nice roomy accomodations at a good price. The person I am dealing with has been very professional thus far. We booked the DDP and ME through him. Disney is sending us the luggage tags. I got a hard copy of our ressie sent to the owner and forwarded to me....we are good to go. We are making three equal payments and we pay for DDP at check in.

The biggest problem is this is the way to get hooked on DVC. At least I know that after renting points a few times, we were signing the MICKEYS and dating the PALM TREES. We do love our points, looking forward to F & W, and staying Concierge at AKV in July.

:rotfl2: At least we know what to look forward to!

I rented twice before buying.

PROS
-less expensive way to stay in a deluxe (rented studio cheaper than regular room from Disney)
-no daily mousekeeping (pro to us b/c it didn't interrupt our nap times!)
-the space of a one bedroom

CONS
-can't really get Fri & Sat nights cheaper, best if you plan sun-thur night
-I was worried until check in that we might not have a room (just the first year, we rented from the same guy 2 years in a row)
-convinced me to buy DVC :rotfl:

I had a good experience. I tried to rent from DVC boards, but nobody would deal with me because my post count was so low, so I resorted to Ebay. I don't think you can rent from EBAY anymore b/c Disney has cracked down.

Can I jump in and ask a question:) ? We've rented points for the last two years and stayed at OKW and fell in love with it:thumbsup2 . To us, it's the way to go...renting points and all. There are 4 of us, so the accomodations at OKW are perfect and we found it to be cheaper than getting a room thru Disney directly. My question is: If you can do this, rent points, why would you buy into DVC? Just curious because I posed this question to my DH and got shot down! I want to buy into DVC but he says...what's the point when you can rent points and not have to pay dues.

Just wondering why someone would buy into DVC when they can rent...what do you find the advantage to be?

Thanks!:goodvibes

It makes sense to rent in some situtations. Like for us - we go once a year for about 5 nights and stay in a studio. So we're talking spending $600 each year. Some people pay that for their annual dues!

But once you start going more often, staying over weekends, needing larger accommodations than a studio, it's gets pricey and then you need to buy in. For us, we continue to rent - but may have to buy soon since we have a new daughter and a studio won't last us long.

I think there are calculators that help you in deciding to buy or not. Plus there are some perks like discounted tickets. And DDE once you get an AP (much better option that the dining plan, IMO).

So check those out, find that calculator and use all that as ammunition in getting him to say yes!
