Anyone recommend any US towns to vacation during Christmas... I want a small town Christmas.

That sounds really lovely. But does Williamsburg get any snow? I can't imagine purposely traveling to a town for Christmas, and it has everything but snow. :confused3

I'm thinking, as PP mentioned VT or Vail, Co or somewhere where there's definitely a likelihood of snow. :cold:
No, Williamsburg usually doesn't have snow. But it was within driving distance for us. If the OP is flying, there are lots of other possibilities.

This year we are considering the Poconos (also driving distance for us...got 2 kids in college..$$$), which does get snow. Jim Thorpe has a special Old Time Christmas. https://www.poconomountains.com/event/jim-thorpes-olde-time-christmas/15514/

Another vote for Leavensworth, WA. I regret not visit when we still lived in Washington. Lodging books up fast so availability may be limited.

I want to get away from FL and go somewhere I can feel and experience Christmas. Nevada City is at the top of my list. All thanks to a certain Hallmark Christmas movie. I was looking for more suggestions.
I'm sorry that I don't have a suggestion for you, but could you tell me the name of that Hallmark movie? We live in the Sacramento area and drove up to Nevada City/Grass Valley last fall and during December. It's such a cute little town, lots of historic buildings. They had a Victorian Christmas event in December that we went to and I just remember it being very cold, in the 30's.

What dates in December did those of you making suggestions visit these areas? I'd love to have an experience like this the week after Christmas starting on the 26th or 27th. Have all the Christmas festivities ended by then? Everyplace we've visited the week after Christmas, except WDW, has gotten back to business as usual by then. I want to be able to extend Christmas as long as possible. :teeth:

That's definitely personal preference. DH & I grew up in the mtns of NC. It seems like they get snow every time we visit, whether that's for Thanksgiving, a December wedding or Christmas. Our DS, who was raised in Florida, loves seeing it snow. DH & I would be perfectly fine to never see snow again. We got our fill of it, when we lived there. We would consider a ski town that had everything you could possibly want within a short walking distance. Other than that we wouldn't purposefully go in search of snow. We hate driving or riding in snow & aren't crazy about the frigid temps either. I could totally understand why someone who has rarely, if ever, seen snow would want to go to an area with a high likelihood of seeing the white stuff.

Durango, CO which is an awesome old west feeling town to begin with has a Polar Express every year. I'm assuming it uses the Durango-Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad which would take you on an amazing journey through the mountains, and it's a great Christmas experience. I've ridden the railroad on several occasions and it was wonderful not even in winter.

We're heading to Grass Valley in a couple weeks - hoping that the ski resorts in Tahoe are open by then, but any recommendations of other things to do in the area in case they don't get snow? My wife's friend is letting us use a vacation home they have outside of Grass Valley.

thanks everyone .. reading through suggestions now and yes i will fly.. though last year i did drive from Orlando to Philly...

The Christmas Card.

I've been curious about this place at Christmas. Have you or someone you know been during holiday time?
Just enough snow to make it fun:). The ex and I stayed at one of the colonial houses which at that time were a division of Williamsburg Inn, back in the winter of 1980. Lovely sitting by the room's fireplace and then walking to the Inn for dinner. Or vice versa.
Had hoped to stop there on our way to DW this Christmas but the logistics of changing train lines was a bit diffy since we'll be in a hurry to be @ the Mouse House.

We used to visit Philly every year as a day or weekend trip during the holidays just to see the holiday decor:). Living in Manhattan it's an easy peasy commuter train ride and inexpensive too. This year, we'll stop in Philly for a night on our way to Orlando just to keep the tradition going.

I had snow in Williamsburg the year that I was there during the holidays. And then it was 72 degrees on NYE.;)
