Anyone recently drive down I-75 to Florida?

We JUST got home from an extremely painful drive through GA coming back from the World. Whoever the Einstein is that thought closing the right 2 lanes of a 3 lane interstate on a weekend with no signage or warning ought to be fired. Around here, warnings are given up to 30 miles prior to lane closure, and basic paving work is done at night. This was northbound about 50 miles south of Atlanta on Saturday 10-20. The portable message board was placed about 2 miles before the construction, but 18 miles after the backup started. My kid had to pee in a cup and we tossed it out the window, that's how bad it was. At least a dozen vehicles were overheated, and 2 accidents had occurred as the stop was sudden with no warning. Our delay was just about 2 hours.

IF a message board had been placed further back, I could have exited at US 41 near Forsythe and took an alternate, but it would have been too difficult to actually let travellers know what is going on ahead of them.

There is also construction near exit 269 NB, but a backup of only a 1/2 mile was there.

We made up the rest of our time by setting the cruise somewhere around 90 through the rest of GA, all of TN, and the southern 2/3 of KY.

The GA 511 number was busy the entire time we set in the construction.

1) The same Einstein who probably owns the orange barrel company. NEW GAME FOR THE KIDS and will last ALL THE WAY THROUGH GA--count the orange barrels. Pay them a penny for each one they count. (If you paid a nickel it would then cost more than the trip) Of course--your kids need to be able to count into the millions. ;)

2) Going north on 75 NORTH of Atlanta they do have the message board further back. Just remember--exit numbers are also mile marker numbers--so if the sign says 20 minutes to exit 269 and you are at exit 260 then it is 20 minutes for 9 miles.

3)There is an alternate number: 888-424-4929. Program your cell phone.

I repeat--buy a map. After sitting for 30 minutes you can then choose to get off at the next exit and take an alternate route--esp. if you can't get through on the phone.

Also--a good ole fashioned CB could be in order. At least you can listen or talk to truckers about road conditions in real time.

TIP: I was in a back up recently on the the I85North side of town----the county had a sheriff's car in the median--ANYONE who cut across the median (even on the little worn out dirt track) got a ticket!!!!!!
