DD 10 had a hampster it got out of it's cage sometime over night. We've looked all over for her hampster. Anyone have any ideas what we can do to find this little guy. DD is so upset. We've placed towels underneath the door so it won't get out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Thanks amid chaos for the great idea. I placed a card- board box and used books as steps. I'm sitting here on the computer and I hear this news and yep he came back he was climbing up the steps to get some food. I'm so happy we found him and he's alive. Thanks everyone for the great advise.

Get a trash can or an empty aquarium and using books, build some "steps" up to the top of the can..throw some food or fruit inside the trash can. he will climb up, fall in and not be able to get out. Worked for me...several times.

My dog helped me find my hamsters whenever they would get out. She wouldn't hurt them, but she let me know where they were.

The other method would be to make a ramp to a tall container with food in it. Make sure it's something they cannot get out of. Or that's what I read, it never worked for me, but it might for you.

We used pine nuts. Put them in the middle of the floor. When the little critter came out to eat, we threw a lightweight blanket over the top and scooped him up quickly.

Just wishing you luck!

My DD's snake is loose somewhere in my house! I'm hoping he found the door to the front yard!!:p
So far, the rat has never escaped!

Thanks for the suggestions. Just wondering how long he can make it without water/food.

Might help to look at night with a flashnight, as hamsters tend to be nocturnal.

Good luck - we always found my son's in the corner of his closet under the shoes!

Many years ago, DH's daughter's got out while we were on vacation. We came home to an awful mess -- the little guy had scratched all of the closet doors and tore up the carpet to try and find something to eat. It survived the entire week eating whatever it found.

We were able to find it -- in a closet. It's a wonder it survived for that long -- especially without water.
