Anyone not crazy about characters?

I hope I don't get flamed for this.

I think it's so cute when I see photos of adults with Mickey, Pluto, Pooh, etc. And I love the Winnie the Pooh characters - in books, on mugs, in the cartoons. But when I see the 'characters' at WDW, all I can see is an adult in a costume.

I would really like to think that's Tigger or Pooh, but I just can't.

I'm thinking about getting my photo taken with Tigger (can you tell he's my favourite)when we're there in three weeks just to say I did it once, but I think I'll feel too silly.

Am I the only one who can't suspend reality and really believe?

You aren't the only one! I like watching them, but when DH & I got our pictures taken with Tigger (his fav), I spent the entire time thinking that the person playing Tigger was thinking "OMG, I cannot believe I'm taking pictures as Tigger with adults, what a couple of dorks."

Dont worry, you're not the only one. I just dont get the autograph thing either (dont flame, please!) as I keep thinking it's just another college kid/adult in a costume suit signing away!!

We didn't take one single photo with a character.

I don't completely agree, but I do see what you mean. I was friends with a lot of people who were characters, and I always wonder if I know anyone under there. However, many times, that part of my mind shuts down and reality goes back home with my job and bills.

I know exactly what you mean. However, I still LOVE the characters. I know I probably know a lot of them, but I don't care. To me that's Mickey I'm hugging.

I may be reaaaaallllyyy weird for a Disney fan, but I can hardly tell Pluto and Goofy apart. One is a dog dog, one is a dog person, but I always get them mixed up. I never liked cartoons growing up and really don't care much for the characters (I called them the "animals" once and was sternly reprimanded ). But I love, love, love WDW! I love all the parks, the parades, and especially the atmosphere. It's just the characters I don't really "get"

The characters are great!!! While everyone is in line for an autograph I'm in their spot to ride another great Disney ride!

I've had those same thoughts myself, but you know what - They're used to it. Just as many adults do it as kids. It's their job.

I'm wierd in the same way, although it's DH who "sternly reprimands" me for not knowing the difference between Pluto and Goofy. Really, neither of us are into characters. After going to WDW about 15 times, they're starting to grow on me a bit, though.

My kids love the characters and so we go and make a big fuss for the kids, as in "OOOOOh, look!!! It's Winnie-the-pooh!!!"

But personally they freak me out! They are creepy to me and I hate when they come up and try to "talk" to you, because of course they can't really talk so it's like having a conversation with a mime. And you don't know who or what is in there.

I have no problem with the characters that are "real" people like the princesses and their princes. Those don't bother me.

Perhaps this is something I should be seeking therapy for. But as I said, the kids love em all so we make it a point to visit and take pics with everyone we see.

i do feel a bit silly at first... but then get into the whole spirit of things! lol... i mean... it's that character's JOB to have their piccie taken with you... lol...

i find it wierder with the "real" characters.. the princesses etc... i find it a little embarrassing!

The suspension of disbelief is something that I really struggle with more on the rides than with the characters. I know that must sound strange, but I have never feared that I was going to be eaten by a dinosaur or blown to bits riding through a pirate battle. I like the rides, heck, I dream of BTMRR sometimes, but the suspension of disbelief is a big hurdle for me.

This of course is coming from the same woman that carried around the scars of a 4 year old that did not get to meet Mickey Mouse in person for 30 years and then bawled like a baby when Mickey hugged her. lol Maggie

Wait until you have kids! We enjoy our kids enjoying the characters thats for sure. When dh and I went to Disneyland just the two of us awhile back we did get our picture taken with MuShu (sp?) from Mulan. I knew my daughter would get a kick out of it and there was no line so what the heck. It did irritate me once when two grown up women spent about 10 minutes chatting with Minnie one time causing the cm to tell everybody Minnie had to go. My daughter was next, she was crushed! But I guess, those ladies paid admission to feel the magic too so I shouldn't complain.

This is my take on characters too. I just don't get into them and neither do my kids--which is fine because i'd rather go on Buzz Lightyear again than stand in line for a guy(or girl) in a fuzzy suit.

I like the characters, but DS4 doesn't care for them, and in fact, is kinda scared of them. We've found the character meals to be a good compromise for our family -- no lines and DS can be as standoffish as he wants while DD18 mos. gets all of the attention she demands from the characters. I think DD would be happy to take the characters home if she was allowed to do so.

Thank goodness neither one of my kids has gotten into the autograph thing -- I would consider time spent running after autographs to be a waste of my vacation.

Wait until you have kids!

I'm afraid my feelings toward the characters has been inherited by my DD 13. I tried to her her into it last May, I really did. Every time we saw a character I said "Oh look! Go meet [fill in character name] and I'll take a photo of you both. Every time my DD looked at me, with that look only 13 year olds can really pull off, and said "Mom, it's a person in a costume!"

But she, and I, love everything else about WDW. And it's not that I don't like the characters - it's especially cute to see little kids' faces light up when they see or hug one. I just have no desire to join the hugfest or whip out an autograph book.
