Anyone live in San Antonio, Texas?

Oh, and my kids want to know if anyone has ever seen a scorpion? We saw them at the insect house at the zoo Saturday and they were pretty freaked out--my kids, not the scorpions.

I haven't looked but I would lay money on there being several dead ones on my back patio. However if I didn't have pest control and cats they'd still be alive. There is actually a dead one in our hallway light fixture. We have 15 ft ceilings in the hall and I can't reach in on the ladder to remove it. DH is too lazy to do it.

So unfortunately I see them all the time. BUT I have never been stung. You get used to checking your shoes and laundry piles. A good pest control service will keep them out or at least kill them before they make it too far in.

Most of the life long residents I know have either never been stung or only stung once. These are more like a bee sting. They aren't a deadly varity. And my allergist tells me that allergies from scorpian stings are very rare and almost never cause anaphalatic reactions.

To me they are like bees. No one likes them. They can hurt you but it doesn't happen that often.

Now fire ants....we've all be stung a zillion times and those suckers hurt!

Thanks so much for all of your info. I honestly cannot wait to move!

Our offical move date keeps bouncing around a bit. It was March 2007, then December 2006 and now is May 2007. Hubby graduates in May 2007 now, so that is it!

I found some 4 bedroom rental townhouses on the net. I'll post info later and maybe someone can tell me if that area is okay or if we should run screaming in the other direction :) .

Funny you should ask about scorpions.....We killed one in the house yesterday. Those creepy crawlers give me the creeps big time....Yesterdays incident began with Dh placing a pile of his shirts that needed to go to the laundry on the bed....The shirts had been piled on the closet floor .as he was scooping them up off the bed something wiggled away and a med size scorpian ran across the bed....I was jumping for cover :yay: :Pinkbounc :bounce: He nailed it with the sticky lint remover that was on the nightstand....worked really well....We have found several since moving in.....Our neighborhood was a heavily wooded area/ranch, the homes are only a few yrs old.....so I am sure it will be a few more yrs before we are scorpian free.

Okay, that just freaks me out a little. (Mental note: Make sure laundry is always picked up). We have mice in the basement right now and I am having a hard time with that!

I am so excited to be moving that I am almost giddy! Our move date kept changing but is now firmly Late May/Early June 2007.

I keep looking at apartment/townhouse rentals and homes for sale. My kids keep asking if there favorite places are there (Toys R Us and Cici's Pizza). The interenet can be such a blessing sometimes!

I have a big map of Texas and a big map of San Antonio pinned up on the wall. Everytime we look up something we find it on the map. I am going to know my way around San Antonio really well when we finally get there.

RadioNate had it right - a good pest service will keep everything at bay, and it can be well worth the extra few dollars a month to have them do fire ant prevention too. We had one scorpion in the house in 5 years. It was in the shower. There was major construction across the street as they were building my neighbors house (it is on the edge of a preserve and had some major foundation stuff done) and I'm sure that is why he tried to move in. As long as I've had my pest people coming out I haven't had trouble.

So do you know yet what part of San Antonio you might be moving to? DS went to college in San Antonio for 3 years and loved it there. That's why he only went there for 3 years-he loved San Antonio so much he forgot to take the time to study! He still visits friends up there alot and bought his Accura there.

I am in a similar situation to OP (except that I am definitely moving). The big decision now is where to live (have decided to rent at least short-term), with the options being close to work (St. Mary's University) or somewhere else. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!
Are you working at St Mary's? If so, how do you like it? That's where DS was. Not the best part of the city to live, I think it's better to live on the northwest part. He enjoyed St Mary's.

There is loads of building going on here. I live in the NE corner of the city and it is growing by leaps and bounds. I like Northeast SA and North Central. The Schertz area is also very nice.
I hope everything works out for the OP move to SA...
