Anyone know the return policy on a Kindle Fire?

Duh! I made a major goof up. :sad2: Last month, I pre-ordered the Kindle Fire. In the meantime, I thought about it and changed my mind, since I already have an iPad. I totally forgot about canceling the order though, and just tried to do it tonight. I got an email from Amazon saying it's too late to cancel, as it's already being prepared for shipment.

I know I can return it after it arrives, but I'm guessing that I'll have to pay for return shipping and insurance. Is there any legitimate (honest) way of getting around paying for the return shipping?

Check their return policies. You may be able to return it with no shipping costs. They do offer paid return shipping on some items.

I don't know if it is "honest" but you can refuse delivery if you are there when they deliver it.

Refusing the delivery is a perfectly acceptable way to send it back to them wihtout paying shipping. If you aren't home when it is delivered, you can leave a note refusing all packages from amazon.com or if it comes post office you can bring the unopened package back to the post office and refuse it.

Amazon uses UPS. They will try to deliver three times. You shouldn't need to leave a note saying you refuse shipment because they should need a signature so they wont just leave it at the door. They will leave a sticker on your door letting you know they were there and give you options such as to leave with a neighbor or picking up at the UPS warehouse. After the third time it gets sent back. So as long as you are not home it will get sent back and there will be no shipping fees. However I had to return something to Amazon since I figured out after I got it that I didn't need it and I paid for shipping and it was only about $6.

Their return process will generally charge you for the return shipping from your refund.

"return shipping costs are only reimbursed if the return is due to Amazon error"

"If you return an item using the return label provided in the Online Returns Center and the reason for return is not a result of our error, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund."

And this could happen with the ups refusal, too.

With past kindles they gave up to a month to return it, but yes you are responsible for the shipping costs (and if you refuse UPS they could charge you whatever UPS charges for that).

Personally, I would accept the package and hold onto it for a couple weeks and see if they're going to sell out before the holidays thus causing the price to sky rocket. You've already got it, so imo you might as well see if you can sell it off to someone anxious to get it before the holidays before sending it back. If not, send it on back before you hit the one month mark. Either way you'd be out the same amount.

This isn't the case in all areas. I have never signed for my kindles and I have 3. UPS always leaves the packages on my doorstep and rings the doorbell.

When I created an order by mistake and didn't get it cancelled before it was being processed (less than 30 seconds, I swear) an Amazon rep told me to go ahead and refuse shipment.

I actually had to call the shipping company and ask them to come back and pick up the package since it was left when no one was home, but that wasn't a big deal. I left it on the doorstep on the specified day, they picked it up and returned it, Amazon credited my account, and I wasn't charged anything for return shipping.

BTW, I don't remember the last time I had to sign for a package from Amazon. Sheesh, even a 32" flat screen was left on the doorstep, no signature required. And I've had packages from Amazon come via USPS, UPS, FedEx, even a small courier company.

OP here. That's an EXCELLENT idea! Since it looks like I'll have to pay a few bucks for return shipping anyway, I might as well hang on to it for 2 or 3 weeks and see if I can sell it at a profit.

I think signing for UPS must depend on where you live? I just had a $800+ electronic item (packaged in it's original box, so it was very easy to see what it was), left on my doorstep a couple of weeks ago.

I had the same problem last year... I had been out shopping all day and when I cam home my 40" flat screen was sitting on the porch in the original box, letting everyone and their mom see what was just sitting there... :headache: Thankfully it was still there, but jeez! MANY items have been left on the porch by UPS (coming from Target and Amazon).
