I'm talking Fairies, Werewolves, witches etc...

I'm looking for new authors to read and this is one category I enjoy reading but don't know of any authors. (except for Laurell Hamilton) I'm not too into Sci-fi so i am looking for strictly fantasy. :wizard:

TIA,

CharityLynn

Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Piers Anthony, Anne Rice's early works for good vampire novels, Anne Mccaffrey is really popular but I believe she has some sci fi in with her pern books

Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote my favorite book: The Mists Of Avalon. It's wonderful: faeries, witches, spells, and a look at King Arthur's court from all the women in his life's perspective.

Kim Harrison - Dead witch walking...there are 3 books out already, with another due to be released next month. Witch, vamp, pixie, demons

The Dresden Files.....can not think of the author right now. Is about a Chicago based warlock names Harry Dresden.

Stolen, Bitten, Dime Store Magic, Industrial Magic....again, can't think of her name, but she has written all of these. Werewolves, witches, vamps, demons

Lyndsay(?) Sands....Single White Vampire, Once Bitten(?)...hers are in the romance section at Waldenbooks. The ones that I have read are all about one family.

The Weather Wardens(?) series.....Rachel Caine Not really about witches, vamps, or pixies....wardens control, fire, weather, earth... you may or may not like.

DH got me hooked on these types of books. He started me out with a couple that were more Sci-Fi and they were ok, but these listed above, I got myself and I really like them. There is another author that I read 1 of her books and like it, but the only think I remember about the book title/author is her first name is Cheyenne (spelling?).

And some of Andre Norton's stuff is very fantasy.

Katherine Kerr has some excellent celtic fantasy novels, too.

ooh, the Weather Wardens sounds like a neat series to me.

Also reminds me of another author... I think his name is Dan Callendar. He does a "mancer" series on the fire adept, water adept, air adept, and earth adept. Very well done, but the books are a little hard to find. I think the first one is Pyromancer, but I don't remember for certain.

Moonheart by Charles de Lint is one of my all time favorite Fantasy novels.

Im like you :) i only read fantasy books. ill list some books i have that are about fantasy. thought mind you i prefer ones with dragons also :thumbsup2

There is Mercedes Lackey, some of her books are that are great fantasy is,

(one whole series)
The black Griffen
The white griffen
the silver griffen

Another i read and plan to get the second book to it is called joust. its about a young boy who join a army of knights that fight on dragons like knights do on horses ;) very cool and exciting.

Some othes I have are Funke, ive got one book of these called Dragon Rider. It has dwarves, faeires etc in along with brownies.

Another who is a new book author is Paolini. His books are Eragon and Eldest. It has elves, dwarves, dragons, etc in it also.

I also recomended the spiderwick series, short and sort of kidish. but fun to read.

Piers Anthony, second that! - Incarnations of Immortality series
C. S. Lewis - "Out of the Silent Planet " series(very nice but leans a little sci-fi)
Clive Barker, although he crosses over into horror here and there
Marion Zimmer Bradley (Mists is also my all time, if you were stranded on a desert island favorite), Jane Yolen, if you like cats Andre Norton has a series of short story collections called "Catfantastic", Ursula K LeGuin.....

I like to read short story collections and then search out more stuff by the authors I liked....

Edited to add: jen0610:

"Industrial Magic" and "Dime Store Magic" are by Kelley Armstrong - love her too!!!! :sunny: Cheyenne McCray wrote "Forbidden Magic" I am having a hard time getting into that, bought because it looked similar to Armstrong"s....I made note of soem of you r other suggestions - am going to check them out - thank you!!!!

:wizard:

Also Robin McKinley - although these really seem geared toward early teen girls - I still love them.

David Eddings for lightish but still adult fantasy - he has a couple of good series. Also C.S.Lewis

JRR Tolkein is a little (okay, a lot) heavier.

Anne McCaffrey's are wonderful - even those that are more sci-fi than fantasy.

And, it goes without saying - JK Rowling - I assume you have read the Potter books!

Do you mean Katherine Kurtz? The one who wrote the Deryni series? If so, I agree -- she's quite good. Would also second (or third) David Eddings and Terry Brooks. It's a shame -- I really liked to read this stuff when I was younger, but it just seems like I have no time for books anymore. I'm lucky to finish the newspaper on the day it comes out (although, frankly, these days, some of the stuff in there seems like a fantasy novel too).

Which of these are Romance mixed with Fantasy?

Robin McKinley....Especially her Daria books. Yeah, they are written for teenage girls. But sort of like Harry Potter, they are so well written, you can appreciate them at any age. Also, Guy Gavriel Kay. He's much more sophisiticated, so beautiful I can't even read it fast sort of fantasy. Start with his 'Fionivar' books or 'Tigana'

Sheri Tepper is also fantastic, if you don't mind a feminist point of view. And for high fantasy, you can't beat George R R Martin.

Have you read Eragon and the sequel Eldest? Good books!

Nora Roberts wrote at least 2 book series' about witches.

Donovan Legacy Series

Entranced
Charmed

Three Sisters Island Series

Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea Trilogy

Mary Stewart's Arthurian series that begins with The Crystal Cave, Hollow Hills & The Last Enchantment

Mervyn Peake's Gormanghast books, there are 3, & enjoyable, but I find the 3rd one not up to books 1 & 2

Jean

The ones that I have are:
- Brian Jaques - "Redwall" series
- David Clement-Davies - "Fire Bringer", "The Sight", "The Alchemist of Barbal", "Telling Pool"
- Tad Williams - "Tailchaser's song"
- Richard Adams - "Watership down"
- Tolkin - "The hobbit", "Lord of the rings" trilogy
- Paolini - "Eragon", "Eldest"
- Rowling - "Harry Potter" series

All of Mercede's Lackey's Books are awesome. Including her Elf series, the SERA-ted edge series written with MARC, her assistant.

Kim Harrison, is awesome, and it's already been mentioned, I see.

Rebecca York, Good Werewolf Romance.

Christine Feehan, Good Vampire Romance,. *chuckles*
