Hello DB,
Norm and I are at the shop, what it feels like, about every waking moment - so yes we will be at the shop when you stop by - if Norm has any deliveries, he won't be but I will.
Let me know and will make sure I am there.
Always

I was on the 08/18 sailing and saw the Manatee too, right there beside the boat! I got a bit excited too, LOL. It was wonderful to see :)

now here is the scoop on the manatees - Norm and I went down and took a head of lettuce and fed the whole tribe of them - they acted if that was the dessert of the day - how do you get there - it is EXALTY one mile from the Radisson on the West side of A1A heading South - you will see a huge sign that says Space Coast Tourist Cener
Thanks so much for the tip and directions Shirley ! We'll definitely plan on this with the kids. We'll be at the Radisson on Nov 2. We were wondering what we were going to do the day before our cruise :D

ok manatee group - if you will email me and tell me when you will be by the shop, will make sure you have some greens for the feeding.
Take care and glad I could share.
Always
Shirley

Are there particular times of day that are better to do this?

We live on the west coast of Florida and recently we were at the beach at an area called "the jetties" where people fish and boats come through and it is the only place we have found where sharks teeth are found in pretty good abundance. Anyway, my daughter and a friend were swimming about 10 feet from shore and a nose stuck out of the water RIGHT NEXT TO HER. Low and behold there were TWO manatees swimming right alongside her and her friend. They were close enough to touch them although they didn't as they feared it might hurt the manatees or somehow cause them to bite or something. This was quite an experience for her and it happened quite by accident. We also frequently see dolphins in this area.

Anyway, the point of the story is we might want to fit this in to our one day visit to your coast before the cruise but it probably wouldn't be until early evening. Would this be a bad time of day?

Thanks!

Hey there - I put the wrong address for the manatee watch - it is on Center Street NOT Central Street.
Thanks
Shirley

Shirley-you better watch out feeding and watering the manatee's. I think there is a state law forbiding it isn't there? I don't wanta see anyone in cuffs..lol... I'm from New Jersey but we have snorkeled with manatees couple times we came down to visit. Regards, Gary

Shirley, I am looking forward to meeting you in January when we go on our next cruise. I can't wait to meet one of the most kind and sharing person there is on the face of this earth!!!

WOW! This is way cool! Last year when we were vacationing in Boca Grande, we rented a boat slip at the marina on the north end of the island, and when we came back in after playing on the boat there were two manatees playing in the boat slips! There was a lady from there, and she told us to turn on the hose, and they laid there and drank from the hose for a long time - it was the coolest thing I have ever seen!! :D

We will be down for a Wonder cruise sailing out Oct. 31, and will definately be stopping by to visit with these gentle giants! Thank you sooo much for sharing this information with us Shirley - you are truly a sweet lady!

Kim

Hi Gary - I was an State- approved manatee watcher for years - had to log in every day which came up to my canal to either have their young ones, etc - I did give them water and I did feed them - now they are an endangered animal and this is why I still go down to see them and I still feed them tho so many folks do that they are very content where they stay - Norm and I just came in a little while ago and it was a funny experience, there were other folks there with a small dog - the dog went into the water and was swimming with the manatees - they said their dog did it on a regular bases - noone has ever hurt these manatees where they are and everyone that does go there are very protective about them - I shared this place because it is so peaceful and the gentleness of these huge mammels (ms) is so rewarding.
God Bless each and all
with love
Shirley

I think what you've done for the manatees is very admirable. How close is your shop to the manatee site---I'd like to pop in and say "hello" to you if I could.
Thanks......

My shop is about 3 blocks from where you turn to go to the Manatees playground = the Perfect gift - 6550 North Atlantic Avenue at the Beach Plaza (beach side)
Stop by and see me.
Always

Shirley, Thank You so much for the information. We will be flying to Florida next Saturday. Our cruise isn't until Sunday; we'll be spending the night at the Radisson. We are planning to visit with the manatees before we board the ship.
I have one question. I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the river? I am a scrapbooker and would be wanting to write the river's name by the photos. Thank You!

Jennifer

Good for you in monitoring the manatee's Shirley. We think their the gentlest creatures
out there. We are members of the save the manatee club. My 14 year old daughter has
manatee stuff all over her room up here in jersey. I know the manatee's are a "touchy"
subject down there. We were going to snorkel with them last november in Homosassa
but they all went out to sea because it warmed up! we were pretty sad about missing
them but thats Mother Nature for ya! Cheers, Gary

The name of this river is called (are u ready for this) Banana River - I understand it was named this for the products that was brought over to these barrier island well before the turn of the century - hummm it was not this last century - anyhow the River runs for quite a stretch - once upon a time it was clean enough where I use to let my children go swimming in it - now I wouldn't let my little dog go in it -
Gary I love it when people do get involve in the protection of innocent species what ever it may be - whether it is human or not - there is enough meanest in the world - we don't need anymore - it is easier to be kind then mean - anyhow to those that will be seeing these gentle giants - have fun - and if we can help in anyway - just call.
Always

First group of cruisers got to see the manatees this afternoon - when we first got there - they were on the bottom and I was disappointed that I bring guest to see them and they were very rude (most likely taking a nap on the bottom of the river) - then they decided supper was being served and did come alive, but not as much as I wish they had - the manatees were just being lazy but a dolphin did do some entertaining - anyhow it all turned out well and the kids did get to see their first manatees.
Take Care

Hi again Shirley ~
Is there any particular time of the day that the manatees are more active ? Earlier in the day vs later in the afternoon ? Just curious if you picked up on any habits of theirs. Thanks.
