Can I join?

I'm fine with Joshua also. :)
Of course, Alisa! Anyone is welcome to join (Christian or not -- shoot, even someone who just wants to read the Bible out of curiosity is welcome), so long as they're willing to keep things civil and not try to change others' beliefs. :)

Current tally (Joshua looks like it's well in the lead):

(5) Joshua
(2) Ruth
(1) 2 Samuel
(2) Esther
(1) Job
(1) Ecclesiastes
(1) Song of Solomon
(2) Isaiah
(1) Jeremiah
(1) Ezekiel
(3) Daniel
(1) Habukkuk
(1) Zechariah
(1) Malachi

Okay, I think it's late enough to get votes in.

Let's go for Joshua for this first round, and see where it goes from there! :)

If y'all could read Joshua Ch 1 to discuss this week, that'd be great!

Post here when you're ready to discuss!

Can't DIS now...must go read! LOL

See you all soon!

I agree--the women of the Bible fascinate me too.
It is historical fiction but have any of you ever read "The Red Tent"? I really enjoyed looking at things from what might have been the woman's POV.
Bye now! :)

I'm a bit brain dead tonight to read, will get to it in the morning though :)

Honestly never even heard of The Red Tent before. I might have to look into it when I finish my current series I am reading!

Joshua chapter one...sounds great! EXCELLENT! Will chat with you after done reading. Not a long chapter at all, only about 16 verses. :goodvibes

Just read Joshua1:1 - 1:18. I read three different translations. Very subtle differences in each version.

I'd like to join up :flower: I'll read the chapter tomorrow and pop back in here! Thank you for starting this ~ I've been wanting to do a new Bible study :goodvibes

Nope, but that's one I'm curious about too, Bucky

Another good one is Many Waters, by Madeline L'Engle.

I'll be doing my reading just before bed, then another translation tomorrow.

I am going to try to do this with y'all :). Thanks for starting it, Tammi.

I would like to join too, thanks!

but i will keep up as best I can

Thanks for getting this going

Just finished reading the chapter. :goodvibes Few things that stood out to me in the notes of my study Bible are:

1. Chapter 1:2-3 The land was Israel's in accordance with God's promise in both the Mosaic (Deut 11:24) and Abrahamic covenants (Gen. 13:14-17). Israel's prophesied return after a four-hundred year exile lay at hand (Gen. 15:13-14).

Deut 11:24 -Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.

Genesis 13: 14 And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
16 And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

Genesis 15: 13 & 14 - And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them and they shall afflice them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

*** That is the first time I'd ever realized what Genesis 15:13-14 is saying about the people being slaves to the Egyptians and when they leave they will do so with great substance - The Egyptians gave them many things to leave Egypt after the last plague fell.

The other is the promise found in verse 9 - Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Looking forward to everyone elses observations and moving on to chapter two.

I have to say that one of my favorite verses is Verse 9

"I command you--be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

Thanks Christy for posting the passages that give background. I love reading background on passages that I am studying.
I am going to post my thoughts in the who, what, when, why, how format

Who-Joshua and the Israelites

What-They are waiting on the promise of God that they would be given the promise land

When-They have been in the desert for 40yrs after Moses lead them out of Egypt.

Why-The had broken the commandments that God had given them and so they had to stay in the desert for 40 yrs. Even though Moses didn't break the commandments he was not allowed into the promise land because the people broken the laws under his command. Deut:32:50-52

How-The Israelites were going to enter the land knowing that God was with them.

What I see in this passage God made a promise to the Israelites and God is true to his word. Along the way they messed up and had to roam the desert for 40 yrs but he still took care of them. To me this tell me that as we go along on lifes journey there will be times that we make mistakes but God does not forsake us. We tend to want thing to happen when we ask for them but then we do things that makes us wander in our own desert.
Also the passage to me says that people that are our christian leaders are held in account of the people that they lead. Even though Moses was God's servant he had not done exactly God had said and he never got to step foot in the promise land. This did not keep him from entering Heaven but he had to look at the promise land for 40 yrs and never got to experience it.
Jos.1:5-9 tells us to keep true to God's word and let him lead us. He is with us and He will lead us. We are to be strong and don't get discouraged because he is with us. To me that is my comfort!!

Thanks DSStar4cup. Your thoughts were very insightful. I really enjoyed the way you have broken it down and pulled focal points from the passage.

Just wanted to add one thing about why Moses could not lead the children of Isreal into the promised land Numbers 20:12 - And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them. **** This was right after the people had complained of not having water AGAIN, and the Lord told Moses to speak to the rock but instead he struck the rock as he had done the past time. ****

Also very interesting along these lines is the fact that it wasn't a 40 year journey leading up to them entering the promised land but when Moses sent the 12 spies into Canaan 10 of them gave an evil report which caused all the people to murmur and they wanted to return to Egypt, with only Caleb and Joshua proclaiming that they should enter into the land and over take it under the promises of God. Numbers 14:20-45 - tells of the punishment of the wilderness wandering for 40 years and that none of those adults other than Caleb and Joshua would enter into the promised land.
