Anyone in here decorate cakes?

This is what I made for DD's 11th birthday. I made my fondant, but it was too "shiny" or something. I tried adding more sugar, but then it was too stiff.

Also, she told me she wanted a bow on top, and I thought she meant a bow like this:

and so that's what I made. When she saw it, she explained she wanted the other kind of bow, so I made it right away, but it didn't really have time to harden enough before it was time to put it on the cake. So that's why you see the little piece of fondant under it holding it up - lol.

I haven't posted a cake in a long time but I wanted to post this. Not really for my cake but the display the bride had. The cake is just a typical buttercream square cake but the bride had a sleigh made as a cake plateau with reindeer pulling it. It was gorgeous.

I wish I would have taken pictures but I did 6 mini bridesmaid cakes to match the main cake. The snowflakes on the mini cake were white chocolate dusted with silver lustre dust. It was a cool wedding. Made it worth it to have a wedding the day after Christmas.

Hi guys,

I only chime in here every once in a while, but once again I am amazed at all your beautiful cakes! I just do cakes for family and friends and I have a big one to start tomorrow- 90 people for an engagement party! I'll post pictures.

Just curious- when you guys do a fondant covered cake, do you remove the fondant when you cut it up, or do you serve it with the fondant on it? My mom always wants me to peel it off because she doesn't like it, but I always just figure if people want to eat it they can decide...but I have noticed people getting confused and asking me if it is okay to eat, or they eat everything around it :)

Can't wait to see more great cakes, I am so impressed!

Hi :)
I serve with it on and if the guest wants to remove it then they can. I don't like how the icing looks after it is peeled off - lol.

I think it is a cleaner presentation just to leave it on.

Hope this helps and good luck on the cake! I can't wait to see pictures.

I think this turned out cute! And good for you for making your own fondant. That is a pain in the patootie! Did you use shortening to roll it? Sometimes that shortening-which I love for the elasticity of it-makes it shiny if you use a lot Same concept as when you want something shiny you give it a light spray of veg spray (PAM or something like that).

I think it looks fine! :)

What a beautiful display and UGH about the BMaids cakes. Those little cakes are fun..lol

I lvoe this!

I have a question for you decorators.
I am going to make a very simple sheet cake for a baby shower. Planned on putting a little "favor" if you will, on each piece.
I am trying to find baby related items but I don't know what to call these plastic things......
Thanks.

Okay I said I would post a picture of my cake, so here it is!

It was for an engagement party for a good friend. They had their first kiss at the eiffel tower and got engaged in Seattle, and have done tons of traveling in between, so I listed all the countries they have visited on the cake. I make my own fondant (Marshmallow recipe) and then it was a chocolate cake underneath with royal icing as the piping.

It's been a while since I've done a cake, it was so fun, but a lot of work!

Crz4mm2- have you checked your local party store (party city, party america?) I am sure they will have those little trinkets. Or Orientaltrading.com if you don't have one of those near you.

:love::love::love: the cake! Fabulous :)
I never thought of a party store. I have found some on ebay that are "kind of" cute, but just not exactly what I had in mind. I DO think I have decided to do chocolate pieces for each piece of cake. Hopefully that will turn out ok.

That is freaking awesome Bridget!!

WOW- that Buzz Lightyear cake is awesome! Amazing detail!

A few questions for those of you that do this as a business- Do you do it from your house, or have you rented a bakery space?

I looked into doing it from my house, but unfortunately in California there are a tons of hoops to jump through- you have to have a separate kitchen from the one you use for your home, it has to have a separate entry with multiple sinks etc, etc...

I guess that all makes sense, but unfortunately that rules out doing it from my house, and I don't think I am ready to jump into trying to rent a space. Too bad because I would love to do this for money, but I guess I'd have to find a bakery to work for- but they probably want someone who has real experience, not someone who has just played around at home! Oh well.
