You could probably do the camo cake in buttercream without too much difficulty. There's not a specific pattern that you have to follow with camo so you should be able to "freehand" it, so to speak. You could smooth the icing or you could even use a star tip!
I've been in the mood to do a cake for awhile now, I just haven't had the time! I am going to bake some goodies this weekend though. I want to try making my own fortune cookies in honor of Chinese New Year! I do have this image in my head of a fortune cookie shaped cake...maybe i'll try my hand at carving! Never tried it before...maybe DH will be getting a fortune cookie cake for Valentine's Day...lol
I can't remember if I told you guys or not, but I got two cake books with a gift card I received for Christmas. I got them through Barnes & Noble's website, but you might be able to find them elsewhere. Anyway, I got Confetti Cakes by Elisa Strauss and Professional Cake Decorating by Toba Garrett. They are both fabulous!! Elisa's book has really inspired me to try my hand at carving. She's got the cutest purse cake on the cover of her book! Her instructions seem easy to follow and understand! Sometimes these instructions may as well be written in Japanese...can't make heads or tails of what they are saying, but she does a fabulous job of explaining things! (Elisa Strauss also did Charlotte and Harry's wedding cake for Sex and the City!)
Toba Garrett's book is AWESOME! It basically reads like a text book that you might use in a cake decorating class at a culinary school or something. Each chapter is a lesson and at the end of each lesson, she has suggested exercises and stuff. She goes into great detail on how to do things like advanced piping skills, fondant work, and flowers. She's also got recipes in there too! Her book was a little pricey, but I was able to use my B&N discount along with some additional coupons that I received via e-mail...I think it was an additional 25% off. I paid a little under $20 for it by the time all discounts were applied.
I highly, highly, highly recommend both books! Check your local libraries to see if they have them if you'd like to peek at them before you buy. Elisa's book is usually in stores, but Toba's book is harder to find.
Happy Caking!!
