Anyone in here decorate cakes?

Bridget...I so love your cakes! Very talented...

Cryssi & Bridget...we could do some serious damage around here with Duff style cakes if we were all living in the same area!! ;)

No kidding! LOL

So, the weather is bad where I am. I tried to get out of my driveway and lets just say my van is across the driveway and is not moving on the ice.
So, I called my instructor and she told me to do everything but the clowns, then freeze the cake.

Can I freeze the cake with the icing on it? I've never done that before, I don't want all the stars and stuff to fall off...

Anyhow....here it is:

Brenda...that's really cute! Love the colors!! I've never frozen a fully decorated cake before so i'm not sure on that...I think you can and it will be fine. Not for sure though!

Bridget & Cryssi...what kind of fondant do you guys use on your cakes? I remember something about marshmallow fondant, but couldn't remember...

I think I'll just let the kids have at it, I'll just make two cakes next Sunday. Another clown cake and another for the roses class.

I will use MMF for white or light colors. I have too many issues with MMF getting funky for dark colors. I order Satin Ice for black and other dark colors. I actually hate the taste of Wilton fondant but it is nice for figures as it hardens quickly and very hard. IMO

Disneynut, I saw your cake on cakecentral and wanted to leave a comment but you have them turned off. Make sure to go into your options and turn that on so you can get comments. I love the colors. I think it is a great cake.

Really?? Hmmm, the other cakes I had posted were turned on??? I'll go check it out! Thanks for telling me!

Bridget - I hate the flavor of Wilton fondant too. I have found that I can flavor it a bit using lorann oils, but it's almost more hassle than it's worth.

I'll have to try Satin Ice...or making my own! Again...may be more hassle than it's worth...lol

Brandie I use MMF. For black I put cocoa powder in it, then use Super Black Americolor.

I'd buy fondant, but it's kind of expensive. I buy marshmallows and powdered sugar at walmart b/c it's the cheapest.

I've discovered that you have to knead the MMF a lot to get a nice consistency. The chanel cake was my best batch, I think. I knead it with cornstarch to make it nice and smooty...

We use marshmallow fondant also, due to the cost. I do however, splurge on Satin Ice when I specifically need red or black. I just don't have the patience to fuss with the marshmallow until I am happy with it.

Hi Cakers!

WOWZERS...ya'll do such amazing work, I always get a big smile from looking at all the pics. I may have to bite the bullet and make a fondant cake here at home for the fun of it since I never get to use it at work.

You absolutely can freeze a fully decorated cake, I do it everyday (unfortunately) ;) OK, not unfortunately, but you know...the creativitiy end is surely lacking at the store!

We are getting away from cakes more and more and focusing on single serve desserts...brownie sundaes, tres leches, flan, bread pudding....I feel more like a pastry chef than a cake decorator these days. I need to take in my camera and snap a pic at my whole case since my individual cakes aren't that much to look at these days.

Keep 'em coming ladies, you keep me remembering why I got into caking in the first place!!

PS -Mos, love the sig pic...so PERFECT! :thumbsup2

I am trying to show you what I did this weekend as a quickie thanks to cake central. I didn't have what I really needed but I made do.

Elmo and Cookie Monster are adorable!! They are so simple to make...

I think i'm going to attempt a cake this weekend...i've got an office birthday that we kind of skipped so I need to do something for him! I'm fresh out of ideas though...any advice? He's a guy...and is a social drinker...I just can't think of something that is office-appropriate! I liked Bridget's tequila cake...and considered something similar, but again...office etiquette...Help!!

mosmom your cakes are just wow...

Those cupcakes are adorable!

I just finished this cake for my friend's DS's 5th birthday party which is in less than two hours! This cake has FALLEN OVER 3 times and has been BAKED TWICE!!!!! The "monster" was designed by the birthday boy: "Green monster, 5 horns, 4 eyes, and 2 teeth... teeth not fangs... fangs toooooo scary!" was the instructions I was given. Origanally the monster itself was almost two feet tall... but it took a nose dive... I tried a second version a little bit shorter and dowelled up the wazoo... but that one decided to jump from my dining room table as well. At 7pm last night I went back out to the store for more supplies and made a 10" round base and a much shorter monster. Boy... I hope they like it.

Here it is:

I did this for our local recreation dept. I don't like how the eyes came out. He looks a little evil, lol.

Awwwww I think he is cute! I'm sorry you had such a tough time with him. That totally sucks.

My son would dig Mario. I'm thinking I'm going to have to do a Mario cake for his birthday. He is a Mario maniac.

Thanks, he was a spur of the moment thing to do and I was rushing as well...the kids loved him when I dropped it off, so I guess that's all that matters.
