Anyone heard of or tried "Light Scoop"?

It's a tool that allows you to bounce the pop-up flash. Costs around $30. I saw a little blurb about it in Pop Photography. Just wondering how well it would work.

Shoot, I thought we were going to hear about a new flavor of low fat ice cream.

Boy, my timing's really off the last couple of days. I just ordered an external flash today for the first time in my life and now I hear about this.

I'm going to go with - nah, I don't think it will work too well at all.

Low fat ice cream?!!! That's blasphemy!

It's probably too gimmicky to work well, but I wonder if it might be ok for casual shooting.

i did just see a free diffusor for a pop up flash on photojojo, cut a slit in the bottom of one of those translucent white film canisters and slip it horizontally over the flash when up....seemed kind of like a nifty idea i might try...i know i have some of them laying around somewhere

Don't worry to much, that external flash you get will open up a whole new world for you
I have not heard of this one, but I have heard and read great reviews on this one.
Lumiquest Soft Screen

All of these products that diffuse your pop up flash are going to be WAY better. Direct flash is very harsh, and should only be used if you really really need to use it. I have an SB-800 and I don't think I have ever taken the diffuser cap off, or pointed it directly at my subject....well people anyways. Macro work ya just need to, but that is besides the point.

Just Google" a better bounce card " and you will find a site with a neat video explaining exactly how to produce your own bounce card with cheap available items. Very informative site with excellent examples of the results.

And anything that will bounce the flash will have a good chance at improving the shot.

And the pets and kids realy appreciate getting the flash out of their eyes. It should work well.

I have used anything from tissues to copy paper taped right over the onboard flash to soften the light.

I have just started using Gary Fong's "Puffer," which is a pop-up flash diffuser that is usable in most all situations (the light scoop is limited to being indoors with a low enough ceiling), and currently this costs about $10 less than the light scoop (from Gary Fong's website - don't know whether the stores also have them on sale). Gary Fong also has an easy to use diffuser for point and shoots. You can get them through his website, or through most of the major camera stores (got mine through B&H).

Interesting. I didn't realize Gary Fong sold something for the pop up flash. I have a lightsphere (or a reasonable facsimile thereof I got on eBay for about 1/2 the price) for my Nikon SB-600.

I'd also forgotten about the Lumiquest Soft Screen. I've seen that advertised in photo mags before. Maybe I'll try one of those.

I've tried just putting tissue over the pop up flash before with not very satisfactory results. This might work better, though it's not free since I'd have to buy the film in order to get the canister.

IMO diffusers and bounce devices for pop-up flashes work great, but only in cases where it(built in flash) has enough power. Lets remember that they do not have that much range to begin with and any diffusion and bouncing will reduce it further, working withing the outputs limitations should provide much improved shots.

I don't always carry my speedlight with me. Sometimes I just carry a small bag with my camera and one lens, so I thought it might be nice to have something very portable (and lightweight) for the pop up flash to use in a pinch.

Cut a notch in the ball and slip it over the onboard flash. Preferably a white ping pong ball. Hehehehe

Could be a substitute for those colored gels. Actually that reminds me of when I was moving out of an apartment and someone had suggested to my roommate that we use toothpaste instead of spackling compound to patch some nail holes and she turned up with blue gel toothpaste.

I found out about the "puffer" when I was investigating into the lightsphere, then I figured, well this guy seems to put some effort into solving lighting problems (much like the Lumiquest people), let me give this a try. One of the things that I like about it is that is seems fairly sturdy, will come apart and pop into a pocket without any problem, and it is a universal size - there are various mounting heights for the diffuser on the bracket.
