We are definitely an apple-based house now. Iphones, Mac, and IPad. So, I am considering surprising DH with an Apple TV for his 40th.

I hear it is great for what it is...beautiful to use and to look at, but limited as to what it can do. Tell me about yours!

Also, I read somewhere that you can download programs that enable it to do a bit more...like use Netflix or Hulu?

Anyone heard of such a thing?

Thanks!

You can use it to view Hulu and Netflix, but a subscription is needed for both services separately (Netflix is also raising prices by almost 60% next month). AppleTV 2 will also allow you to stream video and audio from your iOS devices to the AppleTV 2 wirelessly. You can also buy and rent TV shows and movies through iTunes on the AppleTV 2.

If you are fairly technical you can also modify the AppleTV to do a bit more (such as run XBMC and view any kind of video file format (avi, mp4, flv, etc).

In my opinion for $99 it is worth the price. There is also a device called Roku that will do what AppleTV 2 does, but if you are an Apple household I would stick with AppleTV.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

We just bought apple tv a month ago. You can watch all your itunes on it and netflix, youtube, MLB at Bat, etc. My two sons especially enjoy it so they can watch their favorite movies on it.

You cannot play Hulu on AppleTV. You can play Netflix with a paid subscription.

It may not matter to you, but AppleTV only plays in 720p resolution, where Roku plays in 1080p (when available.)

I spent quite a bit of time comparing AppleTV to Roku because I love Apple products as well, but in this case, Roku won out for me.

We are also an Apple family, but for TV we chose Roku.

We just got Apple TV a few weeks ago and love it! My kids are watching Netflix shows all the time now...I cant get the tv to myself anymore. Great product at a great price for us!
