Anyone have any "pregnant after a vasectomy" stories?

OK, I had a vasectomy..... about 16 months after I had it, I received a "surprise" card in the mail. I opened it up and it said "Boo! Guess who is pregnat again? Me!!!!! "....... Turns out I got that card on April 1st! And at first I didn't get the joke! :rotfl:

The last April Fool's joke I played on my DH was a little over 14 years ago. I was pregnant at the time & told him I was having twins. The only thing was that the joke was on me because exactly one week later I found out that we were having twins!!!

My mom's best friend got pg after her DH had the big V. She was depressed for a month after she found out! The worst part was, since the insurance company had paid for the vas, they refused to pay for the pregnancy!!!! This was back in the early 80s so I am sure things have changed. Still, they had to fight tooth and nail to get her pregnancy covered (which they ultimately did).

I have not heard of anyone getting preggo if the guy did the folow-up tests.

However, if I get pregnate again the UPS man might be blamed so I was sure that DH went to the folow-up:lmao:

One of my old co-workers wife got pregnant 10 years after he had his vasectomy and they almost got divorced because he was convinced she was cheating on him--after the baby was born he had DNA testing and found he was the father.

Turns out that a pin hole had formed in the top part of his vas deferens and the semen was filling up the space between and broke through the lower vas causing her to get pregnant--when he went in to have it redone they removed a larger section of the vas and used clamps then cauderized the ends just to make absolute sure it didn't happen again in another 10 years!!!

Standard V's just have a small section of the vas removed then they cauderize the ends.

maybe he dint go. he gone haveta get it done again?

Oh, I know he went, since I drove him there, helped him back out to the car, got his prescriptions, and heard him whine about it for the next 2 months!!!

What I didn't do, which in retrospect, is D-U-M-B, is read all the post op instructions (which I finally dug out and read today.)

Silly me, I trusted my engineer husband w/ the Master's degree to READ THE FINE PRINT. Apparently, there is no way to guarantee even a negative sperm count for two years. Even if he had gone & gotten tested like he was supposed to, there can be a "false" negative. Nice. I am a world-class idiot for not reading all this before. But, since he is the one who is adamant about not having any more children (I really don't mind either way-- content with my 2, but always room in my heart for more!), I figured he'd err on the side of being overly cautious. Wrong!!!!!

Anyway, haven't gone for Preg. test yet. I'm in denial....
Also, DH has a huge proposal due at work, is working late all week. Now is NOT a good time to spring this on him.

I wish I was one of those people! My DH had the V done 4 years ago. I have been wanting to have another baby for awhile (about 6 months now). We only had one follow up and in that one there was still swimmers, but we never went back. A part of me keeps hoping that there are some in there, but after 4 years, I dout it. Oh, well.

Just last week I heard about a former co-worker of my DH's whose wife is now pregnant 16 YEARS after the hubby's vasectomy. It's causing quite a stir and her MIL isn't speaking to her!

Oh , pleeeassse go to the drug store. I am so curious now. :goodvibes

Don't know of anyone who got pregnant after the V but do know a couple who did after a tubal. YIKES!
DH had a vasectomy 9 1/2 years ago and so far so good. He did go for all of the follow-ups. When he had his procedure they clipped a section out of the tubes then burned the ends. He was told that the burning should keep the tubes from reconnecting like is possible with just clipping. Oh boy, do I hope they are right! I love my girls but I don't want to start all over again.
Hope you get the results you want.

One of my former co-workers also got pregnant after a tubal. Her DD is 21 now. She ended up naming her daughter Dawn because it "Dawned" on her as she was in labor that she really didn't want to have any more kids - 2 was when she wanted to stop, 3 was a surprise and 4 was a shocker. Needless to say she had herself cut, tied & cotorized after that.

I'll add to the 'LA LA LA's & I can't hear you'. That is my biggest fear that my tubal didn't take. But so far 15 months later there are only 3 sleeping kids in my house.

I can't!!! I chickened out earlier, and now DS 3 is asleep, and DH won't be home until late.... Bright & early I promise!!:thumbsup2

I am subscribing!! Have to see how this one comes out!
To everyone who is worried now.....I have several friends with vasectomies and none have had surprises. I had a tubal the day after DS was born 9 years ago and no surprises here either (and I'm almost 44 so it would be a shock!).
I know way back in 63 my friend's mom thought she was having "female trouble" at age 43--thought she had a tumor to be removed--luckily after more tests her doctor figured out it was my friend, 5 months along. Her closest sibling was 12 years older than she was.

They have pregnancy tests at the dollar store...trust me they work:thumbsup2

#4 was a shocker but a true joy now.

Ok... I have to come clean. Another reason I am kinda scared is not because I don't want another baby, but I'm afraid my body won't hold up!

In addition to a nasty bout of placenta previa with DS 3 (bleeding & bed rest for 2 months), I had a tummy tuck this time last year.

I haven't done any research on pregnancy after tummy tucks, since DH's vasectomy sort of ruled out that issue (ummm... or so I thought). This could all be for nothing (I am 3.5 weeks late, but am irregular, so it may just be a quirky cycle...)-- but if I find out I am pregnant, I have some serious research to do and questions to ask my doctors.

I think one of the reasons DH is so freaked about having more kids is that he is afraid he will lose me/the baby/both. So THAT is why I chickened out tonight about getting a test.

I know I have to find out, but I guess I am just trying to "time" it when DH is not already stressed about this project at work.

I will be thinking of you!

I hope tubals work, I just had one when I had my csec for DS in January. The docs gave me a hard time about it. Did any of yours?

I personally know two -- one was about a month after his V and had #4, a boy.

And another about the same time, baby #4 and a girl.

General rule of thumb with OB/GYN's doing tubals is 3 or 30 - meaning had 3 children or past the age of 30. Now that is not all doctors but a general statement. I had mine at 29 after my 2nd child. Dr. had no problems performing it and did not even question our/my judgement. We had 2 high risk pregnancies involving toxemia, insulin dependent gestational diabetes, several hospitalizations during those 2 pregnancies and oh that was in the time span of 19 months  Son was a preemie, DD was born 3 weeks early - both induced.

What was told to us by the Dr. is that when the dr does a tubal at time of delivery everything is swollen so the percentage of "failure" is slightly higher than the percentage of failures of tubals performed at least 5 weeks and better at 8 weeks post partum. And I emphasize slightly! Look at the reversal success rate of tubals vs. vasectomies. Tubals are pretty much a permanent thing and rarely do reversals work while vasectomies are reversed all the time with pg's resulting so I would think that there is a higher chance of a V not taking vs. a tubal.

To the OP, hugs and well wishes being sent your way! You have the support of many here to lean on and hear out your thoughts. Reading your past issues with DS please find out soon what your situation is and see your physician. Just because your last pregnancy was rough does not mean this would be - placenta previa is not a normal occurance and many people have fine pg's after experiencing it, but you need to see a dr. to check the placement and make sure all is well if that is the case. If you are not pg, stress will throw things off even more so that could be the issue as well.

Thanks for all the advice & well-wishes guys! I'll let you all know tomorrow whether or not I am worrying for nothing!!

Goodnight!

I'll be thinking of you. Try not to stress about it.

Did you all know that current info states that there should be a re-check every year? That shocked me.

that's too funny. For my first pregnancy I had a singleton. My second pregnancy was twins. I am afraid to get pregnant again because of the number of jokes about "Wouldn't it be hilarious if it was triplets this time" UM......... NO :scared1:

That's about what happened to my friend, but her mom was only 40. She thought my friend was a tumor. Funny thing is, she looks a LOT like her older sister. I tried to convince her that her sister is really her mother :confused3 but she didn't believe me. Guess it's normal to look like an older sister, too.

Pregnancy can often "jumpstart" a woman's fertility so even if there were problems before, a subsequent pregancy can happen without help.

Good luck tonight! :)

Tell me about it:rotfl2: :rotfl2: My youngest 2 are 12 months 6 days apart. I had large age gaps before than.

I made hubby the appt right after that for the V while I was pregnant. He went in May 2005. My luck things will grow back and when I am 40 I will be pregnant again.
