Anyone have any experience with TMJ?

I had TMJ that started when I was in my early 20s. I wore a mouth piece (bite splint) full time for six months and it got better. I then wore it at night for the next 5-6 years. All was fine for a few years then it got so bad that I was having severe headaches.

Finally I had TMJ surgery in 1995. I was still in pain for the next year and a half but then it got better. I still have pain when the weather changes.

Had TMJ problems a few years ago. Insurance wouldn't pay for anything TMJ related. :headache: Then a friend of mine told me to get a sports mouth gaurd from Wal-Mart. I wore it every night and that helped big time!!!! :thumbsup2 It was also much cheaper than the dentist prescribing one.
I would try a cheap one first. Can't hurt.

i've had tmj for about 13 years now-when it first presented, i went to an ENT b/c i thought i had a sinus infection, but it was actually TMJ. he gave me a script for soma and sent me on my way. i took the soma for a couple of years and it did help, but when DH and i decided to try to get pregnant, i knew i had to try something else, so my ENT referred me to an orthodontist who made me a "tmj splint" which looks like a regular orthodontic retainer. i wore it constantly for a few months, then just at night, and i haven't needed a soma since. i'm still using my original splint, and i notice that when i'm stressed, i need to wear it during the day as well as at night. i can't sleep w/o it now. my mom's condition is much worse-she's had 2 surgeries on her tm joint so far-the 2nd one was on january 11th so we're still waiting to see how she heals. best of luck to your mom :)

I've had it since I was 11 but it only bothers me when I suck on hard candy.

I know she has another appointment with her Dentist tomorrow. Im pretty sure it will be for a mouth guard this time. Im really hoping that will make a difference.
