Anyone have a "wet room" bathroom?

We have a disaster for a downstairs bathroom, and after 15 years in this house we've decided to bite the bullet and do something about it in a serious way.

It's hideously ugly. The wallpaper on the inside walls depicts dead brown prairie grass and daisies (also brown, but apparently not dead), the floor is dark orange Spanish-design vinyl tile with black swirls in it. It doubles as our laundry room, and contains a washer and dryer, and also the house electrical panel in on the wall behind them. (Right on the wall; the concrete basement foundation wall.) It also has a dropped ceiling that is less than 7' high. The shower is a very narrow stall.

That's all bad enough, but when it rains, the outer walls weep. A lot. We are downhill from our neighbors, and the runoff comes down the outer walls. We've replaced the vanity 3 times b/c it keeps rotting.

My best idea is to make this space a european-style "wet room" (only probably not with an open showerhead - I guess I mean semi-wet room.) Has anyone done one of these? I'm looking for a ballpark idea on how the costs stack up against a conventional bathroom remodel. Also, of course, how do you like it?

Since it is also the laundry room, we would not be going high-end on the fixtures. Just basic ceramic tile on the walls and floor. It's the cost of the labor that I'm worried about.

From the sound if it, you will probably find mold once you open it up, which will need to be repaired. Be careful about who you hire to do this as it has to be done correctly. You should also figure out what's causing the wetness and fix it or you'll continue to have problems. Also, there are health issues related to mold. Workers need protection, and work zones need to be sealed off so that mold spores don't travel throughout your home and make you sick. http://www.reliableremodeler.com/blog/index.php/2010/03/19/battling-black-mold-and-renovations/ All of this can get quite expensive, unfortunately, not counting other renovations.

There is a show called Income Property on HGTV. They deal with this issue a lot with basement apartment renovations. Check it out to see what they do and how the costs can add up before you go ahead.
