I have been posting on the resorts board but someone suggested I come here.

My dh was just told he has Cancer and it looks like he will be in between Chemo treatments when we are supposed to be in Disney. I am hoping the doctor will say it is okay for us to go, and if he does, I have looked into getting him a motorized scooter for him to drive around, so he will not be so tired.

Any advice for me?

Thanks,

Margaret

Margaret, I will be going to Disney in December. At this point I will have 1 more chemo treatment after my trip. My treatments are bi-weekly. My oncologist said it was OK. In fact he will be on vacation at Disney at the same time as me. We plan to meet for drinks or something while we are there. I plan on renting a motorized scooter, just in case.

I have looked into the motorized scooter also. It is very affordable in my opinion. We will be there for 6 nights and the price quote is around $150.00. We see the oncoligist tomorrow and if he says we can go, then I would get a scooter for my husband and off we will go!

How did you feel during chemo?

Make absolutely sure you rent the ECV from off site. A lot of the hotel corridors can be very long.

I had bought Judy an ECV after she seemed to be on the road to recovery since if she used mine from the car I would be in absolute pain by the time we got to where we could rent one from Disney. We even were able to meet friends for dinner the evening before she went into the hospital for the last time.

My mom had breast cancer. She went thru chemo for a while.

This was about 10 years ago. From what I remember, when the chemo begain she was less sick after the treatments. She had more energy and wasn't puking as much.

Toward the end of the chemo treatments, she had to take more time off work and felt worse.

I'm sure there are lots of different types of chemo out there, and everyone reacts a little bit differently.

I know my mom planned her chemo treatments to have an opening around my brother's college graduation. They planned the schedule so she had the max recovery time (graduation) was the week before her last treatment.
I think she had treatments 1 a month.

Depending on the type of treatment your getting, and if there is any flexibility in the treatment schedule. (Like if the doc and you agree adjusting the schedule won't affect your treatment outcome. I would definitely ask the chemo doc about it to maximize the recovery time before the trip.

Good luck,
Connie

My dad had chemo last summer...how he felt truly depended on what kind of treatment he got. One kind mad ehim verrry tired, hair loss, nausea, etc. The one he was on most of the summer though was GREAT. No fatigue, in fact he remodeled part of the house! he was up early and went to bed late..had a good appetite, gained weight, etc. I think it is very hard to tell how someone will feel during the treatments.

How far in between treatments will you be? DH went to disney for 4 days last year with DD about 6 weeks after his treatment round was over and he did OK. He was doing once a week with radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks. I can't remember what his chemo combo was, cisplatin and something else. He called to tell me how tired he was, but honestly I don't think he was more tired at end of the day then we nornally be at the end of a day at WDW. Of course I think he did really well during the chemo anyway, minimal vomiting and no hair loss (I lost more hair than he did through locks-of-love!) Good luck to you! :wizard:

Hi~
Any more responses would be very much appreciated.
I just started ABVD Chemo on July 15. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma on July 7th after going to the dr for what I thought was a pulled muscle!
My oncologist told me not to cancel my trip.
So far, I'm functioning okay. My oncologist told me I shouldn't need much help with my children or daily living.
I wasn't planning on a scooter, but my husband is wondering if I'll have a hard time getting around. It seems so far from this thread that maybe I will need one.
I'm a little nervous about the trip, but had been getting so excited before my diagnosis. I had been planning for almost 1 1/2 years.
