Anyone Game? It’s my Sep 2013 Blog! I'm home; with a TR link in #1189, 10/14

I get a BIG headache thinking about all that is involved in international travel, very worth it I'm sure especially crossing off the To Do list but me, I would be an emotional wreck until all the t's were crossed all the i's were dotted You did a fantastic job saving airfare $$$ ::yes:: you are pretty much all set and I REALLY hope the currency exchange works very well in your favor

:cool1: we're getting closer to the Dis Re-Meet :goodvibes Love reading about your progress

You are very organized! :thumbsup2

We just got the kids' passports. Joshua will need it for the cruise. The girls don't have any plans for theirs but you never know when a great last minute deal will come up. I also work with a woman who is Bosnian and fled with her family during the war. She says, in a very thick accent, you can never get a passport when you really need one so get the kids theirs NOW! :rotfl: Shes hilarious. We went last week and they should arrive in 4 weeks.

Of course now I want to plan a trip so they can use them. ;)

Sounds like you have everything under control, but what a pain it seems to be to travel to the US!

It's a similar list if we want to travel anywhere out of Australia.
Passport, Visa, Flights (long haul and internal), Travel Insurance, Money. I do the DFAT registration - in case I need to be emergency evac by the Aussie Gov. You never know, right?:confused3

I need to start my checklist thanks for the reminder...

Yours is looking very complete...

Just missing Travel Insurance. I need to get on to that.

Your work colleague is hilarious...but I guess coming from Bosnia, she sees things differently.

Australia is always a good travel destination. :thumbsup2

I have never bought travel insurance, have you had to use it before.

Twice before. On one trip, I was sick with the flu. We ended up having to get a locum to the hotel room in Vegas. The visit plus medication came to over $500.

The other time, we used it for DS. He started to bleed from one ear when we were at LAX. We needed to get him cleared so that we could fly home. We ended up getting paramedics, getting a ride in their van to the local clinic, seeing the doctor there. That bill was in excess of $700.

I think we ended up paying $100 for both.

oh ok... our health insurance would cover all of that. no matter here we were. Internationally or on the cruise ship

Our health insurance covers us internally in Australia. We need to purchase travel insurance for overseas. :(

:( Oh princess:PIO that must have been a horrible experience and scary :faint: did they find out why? Is he okay now ? No problems? As a parent I can't begin to imagine how you both felt....Travelers Insurance a MUST from this experience

That was quite a few years ago. It turned out DS had scratched himself and that was what was causing the bleeding. There was quite a bit of blood.

We were rather worried because he had grommets in his ears and we were worried that they had caused a problem. And then the paramedics had no clue what grommets were. Even the doctor at the clinic had never seen them before. He knew about them, and was really interested to find out about the process after he checked DS out.

Oh Google is my friend :) and probably the paramedic and doctors too Its a fairly common thing here, I had several friends that their children had to have them and a few younger cousins too (here they are just referred to as "tubes" and everyone seems to know) see once again opening up the world to me with new words/phrases :) So very glad he is okay :thumbsup2

When you get a chance Ed has been doing a lovely job assisting me with my PTR in regards to the race He has been posting pictures and commentary that is making it all very easy to understand

Poor Alison though, she said we are a chatty bunch over there and then its hard to catch up, we will be pages and pages added in the next few days due to this wonderful added bonus

Its helping me tremendously though; I am a visual person which grounds the imaginative side of me that tends to go wild when I don't have the facts

Have a wonderful evening princess:PIO Love to your men

I always love your pictures! I recently got my 1st DSLR and I am still trying to figure that thing out. We usually don't get the insurance but you are living proof that anything can happen and we may need to rethink it.

I was actually surprised that the doctor and paramedics didn't know about the grommets. :confused3

I believe that the word "pesce" means fish in Italian. If you think about the zodiac, Pisces is The Fishes.

DH is a vegetarian that eats fish.......Pescatarian is a real word! And you know my love of word-twisting....pesky-vegetarian just seemed right to me.

:lmao:

you know how you look at something and it jumps out at you or doesn't ? I am Italian am totally familiar with pesce BUT read it as PESKYvegetarian ...never even seeing the "fish" part and I usually love to break down words & get the origins

In this case I was thinking you were so cute & clever (well you are) but didn't know you were word twisting here :) I got a kick and a giggle out of it, made my day !

The Light in Winter Festival – Winter Solstice

It’s the shortest day in the year here in Melbourne!

So, what should we do? Celebrate, of course!

The Light in Winter is Federation Square’s annual, month-long program of free events, exhibitions, film screenings, forums. Every year for the last 3 years, we have made it to this festival for the Solstice Celebration.

Held on the Saturday night closest to the true winter solstice, the Solstice Celebration brings together more than twenty of Melbourne’s culturally diverse communities with a night of music, performance and food.

There were quite a few thousand people in the crowd…..wouldn’t you know it? I ran into Zaccy and her family! Well…..Zaccy saw me. I did want to take a picture of us, with the impromptu DisMeet but it just didn’t seem appropriate at the time. We chatted for a couple of minutes and my boys were keen to keep going.

There were quite a few treats and offerings on this night…Turkish Delight, Hot Chocolate and Apple Tea. And just as they have done so every year, there was soup on offer….providing you managed to score one of the special mugs that were handed out; first come, first serve.

We got into Fed Square a little later this year and missed out on the Cup-a-Soups! :headache:

The feature of this year’s celebration was Bruce Ramus’ Helix Tree.

The LED lights made for a very colourful centerpiece.

The tree spiralled 13 meters into the sky!

This Helix Tree was equipped with advanced sound-responsive technology designed to respond to both volume and pitch of the voice with a colourful light display. I was lucky enough to catch a choir sing and they did light the tree up into multiple colours!

Elsewhere in the Square, there were free “street” performances going on. This group of performers ‘flash mobbed’ out of the crowd, carrying those colourful crystals which they placed on the ground.

Their gyrations and movements were rather esoteric; but I think that was the whole point of it all. It was all rather free-flowing.

The same cannot be said of the group that followed….the Tai Chi performers were graceful and a little more in-sync with each other.

This group – I didn’t get at all. They were doing a fan dance….

…..and were completely all over the place! Everyone seemed to be out of sync but were supposed to be following the same actions.

We spent about 2 hours at Fed Square last night. We never quite made it to the main stage; but there was abundance live entertainment happening everywhere.

Towards the end, we found our way to the quiet end of the square, near the river. I think we found something else to entertain me!

Ghostly time travel, anyone?

Yup, another great way to pass the shortest day in the year! And now that Winter Solstice is over, the good news is that we can start to look forward to the longest day…..and the promise Summer!
