My parents are thinking of flying America West from Hartford, CT to Phoenix, AZ so I told her I'd post out here to my "friends" to see what anyone thought of America West. I have no experience with them since I only fly to Orlando. Are they are a good, safe airline? Do they mess with their schedules at all? My dad's a nervous flyer and America West has the only non-stop from BDL to Phoenix. TIA

Never had any problems with flight or schedules. We have flown AW many times from Columbus Ohio to Vegas direct flight and prefer them when we fly out west.

FYI - They will be merging with USAirways, it should be final next week.

We flew them the October after 9/11. We were supposed to go from DC to Vegas and they worked to get us on a flight from Baltimore to Vegas. I can only hope that they will improve the USAir "service".

I took America West on a roundtrip Transatlantic flight. They were real good. Probably one of the best American carriers I've ever taken, however, this was about 10 years ago too.

I fly America West all the time on business, primarily from Newark, NJ to Phoenix and/or to points further west. I have had very good experiences with them, and I am very happy about the merger because that will give me a chance to use my frequent flyer miles on east coast trips -- including to WDW!

I've flown them several times.
No complaints except that the route I've flown (Medford, OR to Phoenix) uses Canadair Regional Jets, which are incredibly uncomfortable and were never meant for 2hr flights.

Funny, I just had my first experience on one of the Canadair Regional Jets flying from Austin to Las Vegas (about a 2-hour trip) and thought it was about as comfortable as a 737, and I'm 6'1". The only significant differences I found were a) 2 seats on each side rather than 3 and b) the overhead bins are only big enough for laptop cases or other small bags -- all others are checked at the gate if you haven't already checked them at the ticket counter.

My two main complaints are:
The seat cushions are thinner so I always end up being sore and numb after 2 hours.
The window seats feel extra cramped because the smaller diameter of the fuselage means the wall curves into your shoulder space.

We live here in Phoenix, AZ.

Usually fly Delta to Orlando for the miles, but in 2004 we did fly america west, Non stop to orlando and all was fine both ways. we may use them in 2006 since they have a red-eye flight we want, but we are waiting hopefully for the fares to drop for april/may 2006, its at 440 right now round trip to orlando.
