I know it may seem silly me asking all these questions about how these areas are but on our drive to Disney once we stopped at in a less than desirable town for the night and I was really scared. I like to know that the places I have reservations will be clean and safe. So anyone familiar with any of these 3 town along 95?

thanks,
cheryl

The Richmond Hill exit is just south of Savannah. The exit area has many motels, gas stations, restaurants and outlet stores as I recall...lots of activity and people. It is on the route that we take to go to the beach on the Georgia coast. Last year, I drove DSs to the beach without DH, and near Richmond Hill, we needed to get out of the car to take a break from the drive. I remember thinking that it was a nice place to stop. It is as safe of an area off an Interstate as you will find.
My parents stopped in NC last year (they were on a different interstate, not 95), and found themselves in an area that was "not nice". I understand your concern. Have a safe trip!

Hi,

We drive 95 from Yorktown to Orlando. We like splitting our trip in half and for us that is Columbia SC. There is a really nice Hampton Inn Suites there. I belive it is on Convention Drive, just visit the Hampton Inn web site for rates, etc.. We really enjoy HI , they are clean and have a good continental breakfast. Just a thought......

We stopped in Fayetteville and Savannah. Fayatteville is a military town and rather spread out. Right near the I-95 exit are several nice hotels, a Sheraton, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn. In Savannah there is an area right off the highway that is similar, with a Cracker Barrel and about five hotels/motels. Either place would be fine.

The Richmond Hill exit is exactly as described by the poster above and gets my vote over the other two. Plus you will only be a couple hours from the FLA border........................

I also would recommend the Richmond Hill exit. We've stayed at the Hampton Inn several times - very nice. There is also a restaurant that advertizes southern cooking. The prices are great and the food was good too - a nice break from fast food.

Enjoy,
Carole

Thanks for all the responses. We are not neccessarily choosing between these places we will be staying at more then one of them it just depends on our decision of how many overnight stops to take on the way down and how many on the way back so if you have feedback on any of these not being desireable locations please let me know so we don't stop there!

I live 20 miles from Sumter and it is a pretty nice town. It is not really right on I-95 though. If you stayed in a motel with a Sumter address, you would probably have a 20 or 30 minute drive back to the interstate. Florence, Manning and Santee all have some clean, safe motels closer to the interstate.

May get slammed for this, but I would not chose Fayetteville, N.C. Lot of rough stuff happens there at times. My Dad was military, so nothing against the military, but I hear all their bad press on the news all the time. just my 2 cents.

My sister lives in Sumter, SC. I second what AuntBJ said. Have a fun trip!

Sumter is one of my favorite southern cities if you want to see and feel how the old south was in times past, although like any city it has some undesirable areas.
