I was wondering if they really work. Are they worth investing in? I'm talking about the smaller ones where you just roll the extra air out of them. I was thinking not only of saving space, but protection against whatever may be crawling around the luggage space of the airplane.

I have used regular ziploc baggies to do the same thing. That way, if there are any liquids floating around, my stuff stays dry!!

I did use the roll out the air type when my dd went to college. They worked fine as well.

If you are using the space bags with full-size suitcases, however, it can be easier to get your bag over the weight limit resulting in significant charges.

I was thinking of packing a suitcase and weighing it. Then transferring the clothing to a space saver bag for transportation.
