I just finished giving my 3 y/o a bath and noticed that he is covered head to toe with hives. He seems to be feeling fine other than a cough and runny nose. I gave him Robitussin at 1 today, and he hasn't had it before.

It's the only thing different that I can think of that he has had.

Anyone else ever had a reaction to it?

Sorry I don't have an answer for you but I wanted to give you a :grouphug: . There are a number of things to be allergic to, I have a friend that can't due the dye in Motrin. I would watch him maybe give benadryl and call the on call Dr.

Deanna :bored: :cat:

It could be the red dye in the Robitussin. My brother is allergic to several dyes, and as a kid would break out in terrible hives if he had anything with the dyes in it. Red and yellow dyes, from what my mom was told, are supposedly the most likely to cause an allergic reaction.

has he had chicken pocks yet? i thought both my kids were coming down with a bug before they broke out (and both had had the vaccine, but still got a minor case).

It's the dye in it. DD had the same thing about a year ago, 45 mins after taking it was covered in hives. We didn't use it again and in a few hrs it went away. Hasn't had anything like it since and Doc doesn't recommend using it

I gave him a dose of Benadryl and the hives are basically gone already. Do you think he could be allergic to the dye in the Robitussin if he's had red dye in other things (juice, pedia care, tylenol, etc...)?

He seems fine, but I won't give it to him again anytime soon!

ITA with the others about the dye reactions. Dyes are so nasty! I don't get why the pharmaceutical manufacturers (or any food manufacturer for that matter) have to add coloring to make it resemble what it's supposed to taste like or to make it look more appealing.

If you want to learn more about dye and other food reactions/sensitivities, Is this your child? By Doris Rapp is a good one.

What kind of Robitussin was it? I am allergic to pseudoephedrine, which is the main ingredient in decongestants/cold medications and many cough syrups (Sudafed). I only ever took regular cough syrup as a kid (plain guaifenisen) so I didn't find out about the allergy till I was 20 when I took a cough syrup (I think Robitussin Honey Cough and Cold) with pseudoephedrine in it. So check on what is in the cough syrup because it could be one of the degcongestants/anti-tussants.

It could just be a reaction to his cold virus

This has happened to my kids on occasion.

My friend's husband had an allergic reaction to it. They determined for him that it was the dextromathoraphan.
