I am so devastated. We just found out our 9 yr old dachshund has cancer. The tumor has her right nasal passage completely blocked and part of her left. She can hardly breathe only thru her mouth. It is also pressing on her brain and they are telling us we will see behaviorial changes soon. We have had her referred to our State University Vet Hospital for the CT, Endoscope and all the necessary tests. They are talking radiation and other options, but say it can not be cured. I am so torn as to what to do. Just needed you guys to reassure me to make the right decision. Anybody else dealt with cancer that can give me some advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I am so sorry to hear this! Yes, I had a 7 YO terrier with this, it was originally misdiagnosed as an abcessed tooth. I don't have a whole bunch of advice for you; our vet told us the same thing- very poor outcome even with treatment, so we made him comfortable at home and helped him to the Bridge when it was time. If she is already having problems breathing it might not be much longer- our dog showed no outward syptoms until the very end, when he couldn't breathe through his nose and had to be propped up with a pillow to keep his head up and the passages open. He went to the Bridge the next day.

My dog was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her nose. She had a fatty lump for about 2 years that didn't seem to bother her. She started sneezing alot and would have a hard time regaining her breath afterwards. Sleeping at night was terrible, she would breath louding and sounded very uncomfortable. We were told to try Afrin to relieve her discomfort and it did help alittle as well as a shot ( I think it was cortizone) We finally decided that it just wasn't right to allow her to be so uncomfortable and had her put to sleep on Christmas Eve. It was terrible, but I couldn't bear hearing her trying to breath with so much difficulty.

The Internal Med Dr. called today and we are seeing the Oncologist next. Keep your fingers crossed for my little guy!

My black lab mix Jake was diagnosed with lymphoma on 12/31. The vet told me that chemotherapy is an option with some dogs though he was probably not strong enough for it. I did some internet research on the subject and confirmed that chemotherapy can only be administered in lesser doses to dogs - that it would buy time but not cure the cancer. We put him on prednisone immediately, which made him feel better and gave him back his appetite, but we had to have him put down 3 weeks ago. I think his last weeks were good ones, but his health began to deteriorate, and I would not allow him to suffer. My heart is broken, but I know our decision was the right one. Prayers and peace to you and your pup. I hope you get some good news!
