Anyone Ever Get Sick at Disneyworld?

My dad got a spider (or some sort of insect) bite the night before we left and it swelled so quickly that we had to take him to the ER. We also had a 9:00 flight. We got his meds in Disney (bless the CM at Pop - he was incredibly helpful and kind to us through the presciption order) and he was fine and dandy.

Once I got a migraine in the middle of the WS. That was rough.

Nothing major enough that we couldn't deal with it thank goodness!!!

My daughter has gotten ear infections both times she has been to Disney. We are quite familiar with the urgent care center and pharmacy deliveries that occur on Disney property. Even though it takes a good chunk out of your vacation, it is actually rather convenient when you think about it. I had not heard about the "house call" doctor and will check that out if I ever need too. My daughter has since had tubes put in her ears, so I am hoping this won't be a problem. However, the tubes have since fallen out, so our upcoming trip is a gamble. Oh well!

Funny story about getting sick at Disney.... my dad got food poisioning after eating at the Crystal Palace once (hold on, there is a funny part here). This was back in the 80's when the Crystal Palace was a nicer, sit down affair. He got sick off the whitefish. Anyway, he spent the rest of the trip in bed at the Contemporary. He got up one night to look out the window and saw the Electric Water Pageant going by. He was convinced he was hallucinating so he got right back into bed.

Even since it has been a big family joke. I'm making everyone eat at the Crystal Palace on an MVMCP night and I absolutely had to convince him that the restaurant has changed and that they don't even serve whitefish anymore.

Now that made me LAUGH!!!!
I know what it feels like to lose out on your vacation due to food poisoning.
For me it was a salmon dish.
And your dad was whitefish!!

OK...note to self....stay away from any fish for dinner! HA!

Okay I know this seems like alot but we do take several trips a year!!

The night of Sep 11 2001, after an exhausting day ( we were from NJ and had friends that were missing) my than 4 yr old woke up and could not breathe so an ambulance ride to the hospital and she was diagnosed with croupe.

Last Thanksgiving we were there with a group of 20 and the stomach flu hit each one of us on different days. Oh it was lovely!!!

Just got back last night and had spent 3 hours in Urgent Care because my 4 yr old had an upper respitory infection. 3 hours for 30 seconds with the doctor but we got our meds and he was better by the next day. I wish the front desk would have told me about the in room visit it would have been easier!!!

All in all these were all great trips and don't regret any of them. I always stress hand washing while we are there, its the only way to beat the germs!!!

I did, I had the WORST sinus headache for a couple of days, then took some advil, ended up with a BAD cold, and had to fly home with the cold, NOT FUN!! The rest of the trip was great, just getting sick like that was a pain!

hi
yes i fainted in mgm, just as well thats all it was as the first aid team that came coulnt't have cared less. they never asked if i had chest pains, headache or any relevant deatails, iwas never taken to a first aid post where my pulse or blood pressure should have been taken. i was totally disgusted but hadn't the energy to write a complaint. given my age over 60 yrs they were very silly to take it at face value as a simple blackout! :faint:

I got food poisoning on my Disneymoon last year, because I was stupid :( We had eaten at Rainforest Cafe in DTD, and brought the leftovers back to the room with no frig. We both ate them the next day. i got sick, but DH didn't (I think it was the sauce on my sandwich.) SO STUPID!
Back in 98', my wife got sick after eating at the Rain Forest Cafe. She was laid up in bed for 2 days. We called her doctor back in San Antonio and he prescribed some anti-biotics, which the pharmacy there at Disney World got to us within the hour, no charge. :hourglass

Taking antibiotics for something you ate is a hugh no-no. They don't work for food poisoning or stomach viruses. They only work for infections caused by bacteria.

DS, then 4, got sick when we went last year for New Years. It was just me and my mom, little sis, and my 2 kids. DS woke up in the middle of the night after 1 day in MK and was just wimpering. He was burning up! It was about 2am, I called the front desk at POP and told them I needed some Motrin or Tylenol ASAP. They went into the gift shop to get it and brought it up to our room. I was very impressed with the service. That whole day him and I stayed in the room because he was vomitting and had the fever. We left the next day (it was a short quick trip) and he was still sick. I felt bad he only got to go to the park 1 day, but we had AP's so we made up for it later that year. :earsboy:

Oh yeah, someone always seems to get sick on our trips. Only a couple times has it kept us from going to the parks. Worst was in Dec. 03 when 6 of us got the flu. Started with my DD then I got it and to top things off I was 7 months pregnant at the time too. My dad got it next and by the end of the week my 3 youngest boys all had it. It was a miserable trip to say the least. Really kinda ruined seeing the holiday decorations and actually enjoying them. We all made it to the parks every day but only with the help of major quantities of medicine and I even resorted to a wheel chair.
Atleast the boys didn't get it until our last day there but the trip home driving 16 hours was not fun.

My kids and myself all got Strep right before leaving on this past vacation. Luckily I was able to get antibiotics and we were feeling better by the time we left. Thank goodness that didn't happen down there! Although, during this past trip my one DS got threw up on two occasions. I don't know if it was the food or what. He always seemed to not feel well after we had dinner and returned to the hotel. The one night even I felt on the verge of losing my dinner.

I certainly worry about getting sick on vacation. With 8 in my family and traveling with my parents, the odds are not in our favor. When a bug runs through a family of my size, you are not just looking at a short lived thing.

Yes, it seems that someone always gets sick! Let's see, during our Christmas trip in 1986 my sister was sick with a high fever. The June 1989 trip my father got heatstroke and my brother came home with pneumonia. October 1994 my DH (then DBF) got a terrible sinus infection and we had to pay out of pocket for a prescription and apply for reimbursement when we got home. It was around $150, which was a LOT of money to us back then. October 2002 I came home with bronchitis. Last October trip I came home with bronchitis AGAIN, and worse, a friend who was traveling with us had a heart attack (he is fine now, thankfully). Here's hoping for better luck next month!

DS got sick on our trip a few years ago. It seemed like a 24 hour bug since he was much better by the evening and completely over it by the next day. He also must have looked particularly sad. After getting off the HM we sat on a bench just at the exit and the CM offered to call over the the Jungle Cruise so we would not have to wait online. Also another kind couple bought him a little Buzz Lightyear toy when we were waiting for Spectromagic.
PS: not to gross anyone out but always use the liners for the ice buckets in the room.

I got sick last year. I had stomach pain as soon as we finished breakfast at CRT, and by dinner time, it suddenly became full-blown diarrhea. Wasn't food poisoning, because we all ate the same thing. I spend most of the next day recovering (but still had a wonderful day on the GF beach). Two days later, my mom got it, complete with vomiting. We had to fly home the next day, so I tried to convince her to see a doctor for some phenergan - I actually called the "24 hour" clinics listed in the Unofficial Guide, but apparently when they say "24 hours," they don't mean "in a row." :rotfl: Didn't occur to me to call the front desk, but I'll do that next time. She made it home, and then various other family members got sick over the course of the next week.

My mom got an ear infection while at Disney World :confused3 . She was such a trooper though and was able to make it through most of the trip although we did miss most of the fireworks shows that year.

I've been sick at WDW several times. The first time I was around 12 years old. We had breakfast at the Land, and I had some runny scrambled eggs that really turned my stomach. Then I asked my grandma for a sip of her coffee and burned my tongue. We were walking past the Odyssey restaurant, and I felt the sweat just pouring off of me and knew I was going to throw up. Which I did - right in front of the restaurant. People that we headed there for breakfast quickly turned around. I guess they had changed their minds. :rotfl: We still joke that I am the reason the Odyssey closed down.

Another time, I went with my ex-husband and woke up feeling queasy. I thought I was just hungry, so off to MK we went. It was 100 degrees and 100% humidity, and it felt like the sun was burning a hole in the top of my head. I had a Dole Whip, and we continued walking, but I knew what was coming. Yep, I was gonna throw up. We were staying offsite, and I told my ex that if he took me to First Aid I was sure that they would find us a way back to the hotel (since our transportation would not be picking people up at MK until 4pm!!!!!). He said NO we would take a bus to DTD and walk from there. And we did - with me throwing up every block or so and burning up with fever. We finally got back to the hotel, and I got under the covers. I had chills something awful, and all of a sudden my ex looked at me very worried and concerned and said, "I thought you just didn't want to go on the rides." I had already been to WDW around 20 times with my family. :confused3 Whatever. Sadly to say, he did much worse to me over the course of our relationship, but I won't get into that here....

I've also had two really bad colds at WDW. Both hit me a few hours after getting off the plane. Laryngitis, sore throat, horrible cough....I hope that doesn't happen on our next trip! It stinks walking into MK and getting that scratchy throat feeling. You just know what's coming. :(

About 5 yrs ago, I was 11wks pg with DD2, and it was raining heavily. A real downpour. I was feeling a little crampy, and we headed back to the bus with the rain hitting us in the face. When we got back to the hotel, I found that I was bleeding heavily. After a whole day in the ER, I had to spend the rest of the trip in a wheelchair with DD1 on my lap. Poor DH had to push us with his bad knee. Needless to say, I would never do WDW pg again. I am in awe of the ladies who can. I guess my body just can't handle it.

Guess we have been really lucky, we have been many many many times and have never gotten sick. Even did the 7 day land and sea. Park & Disney Cruise and no one was sick!!

OH yes i was sick at disney- got a great big head cold while in disney- although i loaded myself up with Tylenol Cold it didnt really help- I went to bed at 8:30 the first half of my trip- My DH was bummed by i wasnt fun at the time. Good thing i got better for the last 4 days

I personally haven't gotten sick while I was at WDW but my niece did have to go to emergency room 2 years ago because her head got stuck in the bus door. They were staying at one of the All Star resorts and the bus was standing room only at the end of the day and when the bus driver got to the bus stop he didn't turn on the lights before they stopped (so that your eyes could adjust) and when the back door swung open (it a bus that the back doors swing in not out - they don't seem to have too many like that any more but I do see a few when we are there) Everyone on the bus was yelling at the driver to shut the door so that my nieces head would come out of the door but he either didn't hear or didn't listen. So my sister somehow forced the door off her head enough so that she could get free. She had a major indentation in her head (because her head was wedged between the door and the railing which has a metal box on it) the paramedics came and the next day they were in ER the whole day. So needless to say she does not ever want to stay at the All Stars again (I guess as a 6 year old she associated her accident to the resort) My sister actually tricked her with that last Christmas (we went up for a quick trip and instead of telling her we were actually staying at AKL she told her we were staying at the All Stars - mean I know!! But she was plesently surprised when we pulled up the AKL instead!!)

The first time DH and I ever went to WDW together he got sick! I made him take NyQuil at night and DayQuil during the days! I was relentless. I was still a commando! We still laugh about it til this day, how I dragged him around!
