Anyone ever bought direct during ROFR?

Hi everyone,

First time buyer. My plan has been to buy resale at VGF then 100 points direct for Riviera to match Use Year. We found our VGF contract with August UY and it has been in ROFR since 7/15. Current incentives seem good and I believe buying now would allow me to get 2019 points at Riviera.

Anyone else ever buy during ROFR? Any tips? Any issues with member number from two separate places for new member? I know one concern is losing the VGF to ROFR then having to wait for a August resale contract specifically. Also if the end July the last chance to get 2019 August UY points?

I have 2 x 200 BLT contract.
I also brought 155 points direct BLT whilst my others were on ROFR.
They matched the use year.

So yes, it was quite easy to do.

If you’re buying direct, they’ll do anything for you. They gave us 20 FP+‘s when we bought in February along with a huge gift card.

I did it when I joined, which is partly how I ended up with a Sep UY instead of my intended Aug UY - I didn’t get the resale contract I wanted, but then found a perfect Sep UY contract and bought direct while it was in ROFR. (In hindsight I should’ve just bought direct and then waited for the August UY because we do occasionally travel at the end of August. But now I have many Sep UY contracts, so I’m married to this UY, lol).

but I wasn’t buying a “new” resort and you are. I would recommend waiting till you have that resale, because then you qualify for direct member pricing. There’s no discount at 100 points for new members, but there’s $5 off per point for existing members at 100 points. It jumps to $15 off at 125 points.

Yes.

FWIW, Disney has not exercised its ROFR since at least the beginning of April. It's a good bet they won't take yours, either. Good luck!

You really need to make sure that they are titled identically. This lets you have one account, which is much easier to manage.
To run two independent closings at once is asking for trouble, and you will likely have to do some work later to get them to be in the same account.

But there are two ways it could work.
1) Buy direct. Get your new account number and get a copy of your title from the Orange County Controllers site, and provide both to your title company, and ask them to title the resale the same way.
2) Wait for the resale to close. Then provide the member number and title of the resale to Disney and ask them to title the Direct purchase the same way.

I would do the #2 suggestion and then buy direct to get the existing member discount as @Lorana suggested. If you stick with 100 then at least you save $500. But I would buy 125 pts Riviera--that at least gives you more wiggle room, could even do a full week in a standard studio in low season, and you save $15 per point!

Plus the extra 25 comes deeply discounted.

The extra 25 is essentially only $140 per point. If you did 150 points, the extra 50 is essentially only $130/point.

(Calculated by taking the cost of 125 and 150 points at current promotional rates - $15 off and $25 off, respectively - then subtracting by $19,000 - the cost of 100 points at $5 off - and then dividing that remainder by the number of “extra” points).

Buy direct now before they know you have resale contract, they will send over backwards if they think you are a new buyer. Once yo have the resale they see you as drinking the kool aid

But what does bend over backwards really mean? A gift card and flexibility with UY perhaps? I'm not sure that any little perks are worth the existing member discount

All great info. Wanted to make sure there weren’t any horror stories of doing it. I think the biggest factor is whether we want to go in the next year to use the 2019 points we would get by purchasing direct in the next week. If so it may be worth the hassle of the title work. If not we aren’t gaining much by going ahead.

I’ll think about the 125 a bit more. The current plan is either split staying at VGF/RIV or banking to use 200 per resort every other year.

Not really you are "one of them" and someone who they feel they need to do extra to win over instead of just buying more resale.

They are bending over backwards for everyone right now and if you buy certain resorts current members actually get a bigger discount.

I guess name something they would only do for a new buyer?

Nice plan. I did something similar last December: stayed at GF over the first weekend to be close to MK for the Xmas party, then stayed at Riviera Tuesday - Friday and mostly went to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, then the last weekend at AKL and went to Animal Kingdom. 8 nights total, and did not mind splitting the stay.

then 100 points direct for Riviera to match Use Year.

Current members get better discounts on RIV. You want them to know you are a member and force them to give you the extra discount.

For 100 points its an extra $5/point so $500. It goes up from there with typically an extra $10/point discount for current members.

I have heard of new buyers negotiating fast passes when I purchased my direct, when I inquired I was told it was for new buyers only
